I'm watching Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins. It is now on Netflix Instant! It's a weird fuckin movie, tho. I can understand why people didn't like it. They made some really strange and bad decisions with this flick, right from the opening. It starts with an opening credit sequence that is mostly static shots of buildings at night. It's actually kinda cool looking, but it goes on for what feels like a half hour while the cheesiest theme music ever created plays over the top of it. The music is this big brass fanfare that segues into some corny 80's synth pop and doesn't match what's on screen even slightly. Imagine the Superman fanfare playing over the night shots from Koyaanisqatsi. The music and visuals aren't up to those levels, tho...

Also, the movie appears to have had a decent budget, but the action sequences feel like a waste of effort. There's an action sequence where they're breaking into a building, but the 'badguys' that are chasing him are guard dogs, and it's mostly played for weak laughs. There are armed guards in the place, tho, and they could have had an actual action sequence. They end up having like 5 huge, fireball-in-the-sky explosions in that scene, but most of the action is him running from and spouting off bad one-liners to a couple of dogs. It's just weird...

Wilford Brimmley's character gets some decent dialogue moments, but I don't think he's gotten up out of his chair even once. They cut to him for exposition and then they cut to one of their lame non-action action sequences. Or a training sequence. Not a montage, tho. Just one thing. In fact, the movie plays out mostly like this: Remo talks to Wilford or his sidekick, Remo gets trained to do something stupid like stand on one foot, Captain Janeway (who is in this movie!!!) finds some important file or piece of info, Remo learns how to climb things, Wilford talks to his sidekick about bad guy, Remo learns how to breathe, Captain Janeway talks to someone about some important information...

The movie spins it's tires for the ENTIRE first two acts. The opening action sequence is pretty cool, and filled me with hope that this would be a decent film. I remember liking it when I was a kid. 8 year old me had poor taste in action movies, obviously. I still have about a half hour to go, so maybe it will become amazing. I recommend watching the first 20 minutes because it has one good, though simple, fight scene and the theme music is about as 80's as it ever got.

Yeah, we've talked about it in another thread and I posted the teaser trailer in the Cool Trailers thread too. It's the final part of the Wright-Pegg-Frost 'Cornetto Trilogy' that also included Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. I can't wait to see it

Just watched "Sleepless Night" on netflix instant. Pretty damn solid French action / thriller from 2011. One of those films where you think you know what's going on, but then some new complication or turn of events happens. The movie mostly takes place at one location, not unlike Die Hard. You see the same familiar areas over and over and end up getting a pretty good sense of the place they're in. Keeps you on your toes and you never really know what's about to happen.

Highly recommend checking it out. It got a lot of pretty good reviews as well. Wish I could have seen it in a theater. That would have been intense.

Just finished up Point Blank, the french action thriller. I really liked it the first time I watched it, but on second viewing the various plot holes started to pile up. Lots of times when people shouldn't know where someone else is but somehow manage to show up just in time, some of that weird behavior from the badguys where they do the exact opposite of what would help them get away with their plans, etc. There are some really great suspenseful action scenes, however, and at least one really great plot twist that you don't see coming, possibly because it happens so early in the movie. It's weird to have a huge thing like that happen halfway through the movie and not toward the end.

Overall it's a decent flick if you can look past the three or four really massive plot holes. My suggestion is to only watch it the one time...

The world of The Hunger Games (only the movie - I haven't read any of those books) seems pretty interesting, but the plot doesn't have enough substance to it. It reminds me a little of The Chronicles Of Riddick. The action can be entertaining, but it's a one-time watch.
