Of the things you've listed, I would say that lightsaber roto is the easiest. Assuming you colour the blades neon awesome.

The trailer should have stopped somewhere around 1:30. Now that I've seen the two minute executive summary I feel no need to see the other 88 minutes.

It was recorded for the Catching Fire soundtrack. I was wondering when it would start showing up in trailers.

I have all of these things! If you get an XLR mic go for the XLR to USB converter (I have a Blue Icicle and it works great). I also have an XLR to minijack cable but it's noisy as heck over my sound card. Possibly because my toddler enjoys stuffing things in the minijack port...

That said, if I didn't have the XLR mic to start with I would have just got a USB mic instead of the XLR to USB converter.

I've been working an audio recording setup, so thanks for the practice opportunity.

Bag!

Between virtually every book reader I know sniggering to themselves and telling me they knew exactly what shot was going end this season for the past 4 months, and it was going to blow everyone's mind, I was expecting more.

Trey, I'm going to call you on being part of the problem here. It's not just about spoiling plot points (of which you have revealed none), it's about spoiling the experience by building expectations the show has not. Let's keep our snickers in the other thread.

I agree with everything fireproof78 said (other than the being male part).

I think there is an underfilled market for good new fiction for women. See the success of The Fault in Our Stars, both movie and book. The Hunger Games is also pretty good (could be better...especially the ending). I haven't read Divergent so I can't judge it, but the movie was poorly reviewed.

I see Twilight as on the same level as the Michael Bay Transformers. I get that there's a market, but I'm not going to defend either of them from criticism. I refuse to believe that the lousy bits are integral to what makes them popular.

Faldor made me miss playing Faery Tale Adventure, Drip, and SimCity (the first one) on my dad's Amiga.

To be fair, most Hollywood movies promote a version of romantic love that, if not quite completely toxic, is at least unrealistic.

The extra problem with Twilight is that it's full of textbook red flags for an abusive relationship.

Buy a Flip off Kijiji?

A return to the Storm of Swords level of action-packing would be welcome. The last two seasons on HBO have reminded me just how much was in that book.

Herc can bring his inner math geek to the party anytime.

Is it confirmed there will be three more books? Last I heard he's still planning on seven books for seven kingdoms and the eighth book rumour was a joke gone gossip. Not that he hasn't changed the plan before...

Oh god, I just got to Teague's totally botched explanation of Benford's law. Please excuse me while I ramble, because Benford's law is my jam.

So it turns out that about a 30% of measured numbers have a first digit of one. It's true for populations, sizes of stars, country areas, physical constants, stock prices, and numbers on tax returns. The second most likely starting digit is two (18%), followed by three (13%) and so on down to nine (5%).

This totally blew my mind when I first learned of it. It makes no intuitive sense at all.

It's hard to explain why it's true, but it best applies to sets of data that cross multiple orders of magnitude and that grow and shrink exponentially. The way I think of it is by how much (relatively) you have to change a number to change the first digit. If you have a number starting with a one, say 15, and add or remove 20% (3) you'll have 18 or 12, still starting with a 1. If you start with a number starting with a nine, say 95, and add or remove 20% (19) you end up with 114 or 76, both having different starting digits. Starting with a one is more 'sticky' to adjustments than higher digits.

What Teague was trying to say is that you can potentially spot tax fraud by looking at the distribution of first digits on a tax return. People tend to think all digits are equally likely when they're making up numbers, so the first digit distribution on a made-up return would be uniform instead of the (correct) skewed one.

Teague gets part marks for at least knowing the distribution exists. Now we all know more about how to avoid audits.

If scriptwriters strive to do something original, why do >90% follow the basic template where she's a princess / rich man's daughter and he's from the wrong side of the tracks?

I'm going to go slightly feminist here and guess that it's because the main character needs to seem the 'everyman' at the start, and generally they're male.

Start thinking of 'chick flicks' and you'll find the opposite dynamic. Pride and Prejudice, Confessions of a Shopaholic, My Big Fat Greek Wedding (sort of), and Waitress come to mind.

Into The Woods is one of the few musicals I would happily see again despite having seen at least 3 different renditions already. It was the first musical I ever saw. It was either the Junior version, or I just got taken home half way through. I still have a framed copy of the poster. Blew my mind when I got the soundtrack later and it had twice as many songs.

Not sure I'm going to see the Disney version if they're making choices like cutting the narrator.

But then the movie goes and reminds you that it's still the same guys that made the first one, and is charming and smart and hilarious for 30 seconds before being rudely interupted by the CMCHTWHOBBTIOCATDLBIAATDAFRTTMSINGTBOV and being dragged back into the worst cliches. It really feels like there are two creative forces pulling this movie back and forth like some giant tug of war.

It's not actually the same guys that made the first one. Those guys went off and made The Lego Movie.

I've been watching quite a few more documentaries after succumbing to a Netflix subscription. I enjoy them for the in-depth exploration of subjects I've barely thought about. Good Hair was one that I liked precisely for that reason. Hit me with a recommendation smile

I really enjoyed this one. Guest FIYH Anthony did an awesome job. You guys should have him back to share more ISS stories on some future podcast (in spaaaaace).
