Yay!

OH and I've also been watching the Legend of Korra and today's (S3) finale was awesome.

Quick recap:

Season 1 Show
Overall, it's a well done self contained story that took place in the same world as the previous series.

It also has a surprisingly mature send off to the villains of this season's story arc.Murder/Suicide wasn't something I expected to see in this show but they pulled it off.

The only real complaint I have is the dumb romantic subplot the writers felt the need to put in. It really dragged some episodes down. I get the feeling they had to do some of this romantic, goofy stuff to stay on Nickelodeon's good side. (More on that in a sec.)

Season 2 Show
Okay first off this season has some problems with pacing. It really does, especially in the first third or so. I (and a lot of others as well) get the feeling they really weren't betting on a 2nd season. So when they got the go ahead to do more, they had to quickly write a lot of this season. That's a theory tho so feel free to disregard that.

They do, however, manage to take this show's story in a completely different direction than the previous series in a way I definitely wasn't expecting.

The origin story of the first Avatar is a major highlight with it's super distinct  art style compared to the rest of the show. Made a lot make sense in both Korra and the previous series that wasn't entirely clear.

And hey! They put the goofy, unnecessary, and annoying romance subplot to rest! Good job!

So overall, rough but good.

Season 3 Show
This season feels much more well rounded than the previous 2. All of the events and characters introduced are much more well paced and thought out. Seeing new locations is really fun and adventurous now that we're actually doing it. I feel like this season finally got on par with the previous series.

Nick might have been a bit dumb with advertising it tho. Not announcing it till a week before, putting it online midway thru the season, etc...
Ugh.

The finale of this season was really well done. It surpassed any and all expectations I had had of when this season started. The mature content of its battles might have had a reason it was put online. They don't hold back much, if at all.

Just awesome.

Movie just wasn't for me, that's all. Tons of movies aren't for me, just like tons of movies aren't for you. I'm not sure why this case is being singled out.

Teague, I'm with ya. Opinions be opinions :P

(I thought Her was okay with a dumbish ending and I have yet to finish Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind because I got bored. Oh! and I thought the Princess Bride was well paced until the end.)

Also whoever mentioned The Skeptic's Annotated Bible, thank you!

Kind of getting into anime.
Just binged watched all of Kill la Kill... And I thought it was awesome.

It took the "magical girl" anime idea to an extreme I haven't seen since Panty and Stocking. Over the course of the show it justifies most of what is stupid about the material it's referencing and has a lot of fun with its characters.

Also recently finished up Cowboy Bebop (yet to see the movie) and Samurai Champloo. Both neat, Interesting (loosely connected) episodic adventures. I do prefer Bebop tho, mainly because of its sci fi setting. :P

Linked to Tv Tropes because why not?

I feel bad... as this movie couldn't hold my interest... at all. And I'm not sure why.

Yayyy new Sequelitis! (hating on one of my favorite games, but still yay)

He's got a few good points. Waiting being the main one. I can totally see that some of the game takes an annoying amount of time to do small things. (Even if that doesn't bother me at all)

10:30 I feel like this is related to the sliding metal things he complains about at 12:45. I thought looking around the room in 3d space and strategizing how to avoid moving objects like metal blades or boulders was a (small) puzzle unto itself along with finding switches or eyeballs to shoot. Oh well.
(I dont feel smart enough to articulate this very well)

18:28 I do. I thought that having a part of the dungeon that taught you how to use your new item was actually kind of cool. Having each boss test you in your mastery of that item was satisfying (to me at least).

22:09 in or so, he talks about how he doesn't care about the story and want to go explore and do things. Here's where I just don't agree. I love the story. It gave me a reason to care. I didnt finish LttP mainly because I didn't find it interesting to continue.

I got dragged along to transformers today. Instead of hating it, I fell asleep.

I have lost the will to hate at the moment.  I can't do it.

I dunno, I kinda like Nostalgia critic. Don't really know the others. I watch NC to make me laugh, and that it does. I'm not there for something super critical, just something silly about movies/tv that entertains me for awhile.

Had a great time with it. I liked the huge amount of meta jokes throughout. Also how it poked fun at sequels in general, so far as to have characters point out how similar the situations were to the previous film.

SPOILER Show
Favorite bits:

  • "Look at that office. It's like a cube of ice."

  • Maya revealed as Dickson's Daughter, Parent's day, Jenko's realization what happened. All of it had the entire theater roaring with laughter

  • Anytime the police chief talked, as he continued to break the 4th wall describing how Jump Street now has a bigger budget and to do the exact same thing as previously.

  • The car chase passes by  the Benjamin Hill Center for Film Studies a couple times with some saxophones in the background.

  • The Red Herrings tattoo

  • The out of no where lobster scene (apparently from Annie Hall) inserted into the "Previously on 21 Jump Street" and later referenced with Zook

Things here and there

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes
Just a little as I'm terrible at it. Been wanting to see what this series is like for awhile now. Interesting so far.

Tropico 4
Played just enough to remind me why I love the idea of city sims more than actually playing them... because I'm terrible at them. Fun tho!

Super Mario Bros. Crossover
An awesome little browser game that mashes up a couple of NES characters into the original Super Mario Bros. Highly recommend using a gamepad + Joy2key. Fun game to distract me from homework.

Dota 2
Valve's moba thingy. I dunno, I can't poke fun at mobas if I don't ever play one. And from what I played, I'm terrible at this one (seeing a theme here). It also nearly requires a team to be fun and other people scare me.

Dark Souls
Oooh what fun. Difficult, though not completely unfair. It asks you to really, really be aware of enemy patterns and think really hard for you to progress. Interesting stuff, though I'm terribly slow at playing it.

Also got really into watching speedruns as they help me sleep yet are super interesting (at least to me)

Buffy the Vampire Slayer:

Buffy has always been one of the major blank spots on my nerd-cred-checklist, so I said screw it a couple weeks back and started watching. This was greeted with many cheers and warnings that one would need to power through the first season but then it gets amazing. So I prepared myself for the worst and jumped in.

I'm in the same boat. Tho I'm awful at finishing the things I started and have gotten a bit sidetracked after a few episodes :P

21 Jump Street
Didn't know anything about this before watching. Friends just kept recommending it to me (I was a bit reluctant, as they often recommend crap), and I had a blast with it. May have been my sleep deprived brain, but I thought it was well made and a lot of fun :P

Sidenote: If my memory is correct, you guys recorded a commentary awhile ago for chamber of secrets that was lost. Just wanted to say, the livestream for that one made me laugh the hardest I had in a long time. And if you were there, you know why :3
