I didn't know there was an original, so to speak. I saw the Timothy Olyphant version from 2008 or so and really liked it. From your description though the remake is more geared as a more conventional zombie film, lacking any real commentary on politics, and one can only infer those discussions from the actions of the military.

Yeah, the remake is a more conventional action packed horror flick. It has nothing to say (it's from the director of SAHARA!) I didn't care for the new Crazies. It's a technically superior, but empty, remake of Romero's film. Also, in the original film you can't tell the difference between infected townspeople and non-infected, but in the remake every infected person has goofy eyes and icky veins in their faces. Ugh.

Written and directed by George A. Romero, the godfather of zombies, The Crazies (1973) is about a military plane that crashes near a small town, releasing a biochemical warfare virus - codename "Trixie" - that infects the water supply, turning the locals insane. The government decides to cover this up and the army quickly arrives into town, declaring quarantine and martial law. Going into this movie, I thought it would be a "28 Days Later" type of flick with a small group of survivors fleeing from crazy infected people. However, the real threat here are the government officials bickering among themselves (considering dropping a nuclear bomb on the town) and the soldiers dressed in creepy, white, bacteria-proof suits and gas masks; they can't control the outbreak and are killing uninfected civilians. Who are actually 'the crazies' here? The infected townspeople or the military who think they have control over the situation? The Crazies has the political undertones of Romero's zombie films. It particularly reminds me of Day of the Dead with its scientist vs. the military scenes. Although the film suffers from a limited budget, Romero still managed to deliver a really smart, gripping, dark and eerie satire of government ineptitude. It's one of Romero's best films. "A Thinking Man's exploitation film", as one review put it...

Dorkman has teased a few times that he likes Day of the Dead! I've never heard a balanced conversation on this movie. Everyone I have listened to or spoken with seem to dislike it with no real reason or supporting argument. So maybe this would be a good one for the impending October Horrorfest as I'm sure it would get a fair bit of debate going on.

Wow, I recently watched "Backtrack", a Dennis Hopper film made in 1989 starring Jodie Foster, and at some point Foster is running away from her captors, carrying a baby lamb back to safety!

I loved Guardians of the Galaxy! Most fun I've had at the theater in a decade. It was kinda like 'Big Trouble In Little China' in space.

I was bored to tears by this movie. The biggest reaction it got out of me was when Brad Pitt heroically chugged that Pepsi at the end after getting the thing or whatever. I laughed like a lunatic.

Yeah, I couldn't care less for this movie. It's Brad Pitt sleepwalking (or should I say 'sleeprunning') through a zombie epidemic. The action scenes with hordes of computer animated zombies did nothing for me.

I'll take the classic "Zombie: Flesh Eaters" over this one any day. That movie has a zombie fighting a shark!  big_smile

Do it.

Scream Factory is releasing the "Director's Cut" of Nightbreed!

***NIGHTBREED: THE DIRECTOR’S CUT Update!!***

We have big (and extensive) news to report today regarding a film that we announced almost over a year ago in July. In collaboration with Morgan Creek Productions and Clive Barker’s Seraphim, Inc., the long-awaited NIGHTBREED: THE DIRECTOR’S CUT is scheduled for a release of October 28th and will be available in two retail versions: A 5,000 Unit Limited-Edition 3-Disc Blu-ray™ set and a Special Edition DVD & Blu-ray™ Combo.

In 1990, the film was released theatrically nationwide. However, the movie studio edited the film extensively and several scenes were excised or rearranged – much to Director Clive Barker’s disappointment. Since then, a fan-driven movement was created (www.OccupyMidian.com) to see the full version of the film restored and re-released. Now, after 25 years, fans and horror enthusiasts can finally experience NIGHTBREED like never before! Scream Factory, in conjunction with Warner Bros., was able to find the long-thought-missing original film elements and combed through over 600 boxes to locate not only the lost scenes but a treasure trove of never-before-seen footage as well. With nearly an hour of lost footage meticulously restored, the result is not only a more faithful adaptation of Clive Barker’s book Cabal, but also what he originally intended NIGHTBREED to be.

Official statement from Clive Barker: "This is film history and beyond my wildest dreams of realization. When Scream Factory told me that they found the NIGHTBREED film footage I was gob-smacked! This is the ultimate validation of choices made by myself and Mark Miller [of Seraphim Films] all the way back in 2008. As we embarked down the road of attempting to track down the lost footage, we looked at each other and said, 'Maybe one day they'll find it.' It's my pleasure to announce that the day has come. Speaking personally, I didn't allow myself to believe that it would. Even if we did find some footage (which we did in 2009 in the form of heavily degraded VHS tapes) and even if we did find a company willing to release the film (which we did in 2013 with Scream Factory, God bless them) the prospect of finding the actual lost film materials was remoter than I'd wanted to admit out loud. If the footage could not be found by those who had worked closest on it the same year it had been released, then what were the odds we'd be able to find anything 20 years on? But Scream Factory, in their commendable determination, kept up the search and thanks to them total reconstruction has been made a possibility. There's never been a reconstruction that's had as little chance of succeeding and yet has succeeded on as many fronts as this film has. It's unprecedented. To now have a movie that we can put together in the way that I fully intended it to be seen when I first set out to make this film in 1989 is extraordinary. The project has moved inexorably to this conclusion. Fate and the hard work of individuals such as Mark Miller, Russell Cherrington, Phil and Sarah Stokes, Occupy Midian, Morgan Creek, and ultimately, Scream Factory have made this a possibility and I could not be happier."

We will keep you guys posted about extras and more in the upcoming months.

I've uploaded a wide-screen HD copy of Dan O'Bannon's 1992 horror film THE RESURRECTED, based on a H.P. Lovecraft story! This is a rare, forgotten film that people should see. It's not available to buy on DVD or Blu-ray. There was a crappy full-screen DVD released in 2005 that's now out-of-print. Hopefully, a company like Scream Factory will release this film on DVD/Blu-ray...

I saw this today and really liked it. The one main flaw is the whole 'future Pryde must keep mind phase link thingy active for entire time'. Given that the events in '73 occur over multiple days, are we to infer then that Kitty Pryde spent several days sitting motionless over Wolverine and didn't eat, shit or sleep?

Something something mutant powers.

LIFE AFTER PI is a short documentary about Rhythm & Hues Studios, the L.A. based Visual Effects company that won an Academy Award for its groundbreaking work on "Life of Pi" -- just two weeks after declaring bankruptcy. The film explores rapidly changing forces impacting the global VFX community and the Film Industry as a whole.

Haha 'RoboCop 2' praise!

It's a flawed but entertaining film.
