Great episode.

I loved the movie but it was really divisive here when it came out. People either loved it or loathed it with passion. The more religious completely trashed the movie.

Oh.. and I fixed the tagline for the movie!

The original Danish series Forbrydelsen was pretty good. I liked the actors in the first season of the US one but they botched the execution of the story so I never went back to season 2.

About Everest
Not only did the two Nepalis Sano Babu Sunuwar and Lakpa Tshiri Sherpa climb Everest and then paraglide down from the mountain, they then proceeded to kayak all the way to the Indian Ocean. Their adventures won the 2012 National Geographic Adventurers of the Year award.

Helicopters on Everest
Where does the myth come from that helicopter can't fly to the top of Everest (8848 meters)? It has been done few times and it was theoretical long before it was done. It was first done in 2005 on a unmodified turbo engine AS350 B3. One helicopter pilot I talked about this on a airshow once half jokingly told me that he thought it came from two movies, Cliffhanger and Vertical Limit.

Great episode, really enjoyed this one.

For me it's a personal growth story. Leap of Faith is a movie I've loved and championed for a long time and I've always grouped it with two other films that have the same feel for me, The Paper (1994) and Wonder Boys (2000).

For me these three movies are a lot alike. These movies are about feel, dialogue and characters.
It has characteristics or elements that just works for me. They all take place in relatively closed off world (the town, the office and the campus) and the story unfolds over a few days and the main character goes on a journey that will change his life, presumably for the better.

My Revival Story

I'm a life long atheist but I've always been fascinated by religion and myths. When the televangelist Benny Hinn came here to Iceland he rented out the biggest venue available, the same that Led Zeppelin played in when they came here. It was free to attend so me and my friend decided to check it out.
We came there and it was all you expected it to be.

What struck me was how soft every-bodies hands were. They were raised up in worship and you could see how week/sick they were. Pale soft hands with long fingernails. No scars, no sign of having ever done anything taxing with their hands. It was so odd it has stuck with me even to this day. And yes, to this day I still judge people by their hands.

The most fucked up thing during the ceremony was when a woman sitting next to me left her seat to get to the stage and left an infant on the seat unattended. I was furious. When the child started to cry I took it and was comforting it when the woman was nowhere to be seen. I asked around and nobody was there with them so my 17 year old ass had to sit there with this baby, trying to protect it's ears but the sound was getting incredibly loud in there. We saw the woman in the crowd like a gang of zombies trying to reach the stage, pushing and shoving each other out of the way to receive the healing touch of Benny Hinn. It makes me even angry now just thinking about it.

Eventually we had enough and I found a police woman which I gave the baby to and pointed out the woman who was talking in tongues trying to reach the stage. And we left while it was still going on. We had had enough.

Yeah... that was a weird day.

So yeah... John Wayne was conservative. I thought you would touch on this gem.

For me  Howard Hawks, Hatari (1962) is my all time favorite John Wayne movie. For the little old me it was perfect, Africa, animals, adventures, what's not to like. I was really young when I first saw it and I literally fell out of my sofa laughing. That particular scene was when the young elephants were running after Dallas when she was kidnapped. It was a perfect scene for me. The pacing, the music and the physicality of the elephants moving… it was just perfect.

Having said that, this is by no means a perfect movie. This movie would never, ever be made today. There are serious undertones of  racism, colonialism, misogyny and the treatment of the animals would never be tolerated today. The reasons to say Fuck this movie are plenty but I caught it so young these things flew totally over my head. The move was made in 1961-62 so what are you going to do?

Since then I've seen this movie too many times to count. But I've got a strange connection to that movie. Most personal of them is that one of my best friend was raised in Tanzania. I still remember when I told her that my favorite John Wayne movie was Hatari. Not only was she raised in the town that serviced the movie Moshi but her friend lived in the house that was rented for John Wayne during the production. That house still had the bullet holes John Wayne shot into the walls when he was staying there. Maybe he was just drunk shooting for fun but the theory is that he was he was shooting huge insects that sometimes crawl into the houses. These bullet holes were a definite conversation pieces for sure.

Another weird connection to this town Moshi is that my four year old's best friend here in Iceland is half Tanzanian and so it happens that her mother is from Moshi and she also has a bunch of stories from that time. And she lived just a stones throw away from the house John Wayne rented. So this movie has weird albeit small connections to my life.

Generally I don't sing, it's my gift to humanity, but if I have enough beers in me one of my party tricks is singing this song drumming along. I've loved this song ever since I saw it in Smoke Signals way back
