Thanks, Squiggly_P.  I'm still haven't come up with anything either.

Never started a topic here before (big day!).  I searched for an existing thread I could simply post my question to, but I did not see an appropriate one.  I assume our master Teague will move this if it is redundant.

I am trying to remember where a quote comes from and the internet at large is being unhelpful.  Partly becuase of the filters here at work which keep me from using the complete quote due to language, and partly because I may not have it just right.  Anyway, it's probably an easy one that I'm just blanking on, but if anyone can fill in the blanks and where it comes from I'd appreciate it.  And I'll be able to sleep tonight.

"My one true love?  He's out there, and he can go fuck himself."

Something to that effect.  Thanks in advance, everyone.

Fat Man on Batman
You Made It Weird with Pete Holmes
Kevin Pollak's Chat Show
FIYH
Dan Carlin's Hardcore History
Common Sense with Dan Carlin
Nerdist
Sklarbro Country
WTF with Marc Maron

Those are my subscribed podcasts, but I have a few others I check in on and listen to depending on the guest.

For you other Dan Carlin history listeners, the BBC has started a series of WWI podcasts that tie in nicely (from a British perspective anyway) with Dan's current Blueprint For Armageddon.

Only about half way through this one, but I wanted to go ahead and get my guesses in for Eddy's Comic Book Baby Name.  I'm going with Madelyne Pryor, Jubilee, or Squirell Girl.  smile

From Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (which has the most badass of all Batman badassery in my opinion) -

There's nothing wrong with you, Joker, that I can't fix...with my hands.

I enjoyed it, but it does have room to improve.  Loved seeing Ron Glass, and how much the cargo hold of the "bus" looks like Serenity.  That's probably just how they look and I'm viewing everything thru my Firefly Fanboy Glasses.  Also (paraphrased):  Join us on our Journey Into Mystery; With great power comes...a bunch of other stuff.

Redbox-a-palooza yesterday:
Spring Breakers - based on the review I read, I was expecting softcore about college girls in Florida for spring break, plus James Franco; but instead it was closer to Boondock Saints meets Natural Born Killers (and not in a good way), plus James Franco.  James Franco as a southern hick rapper was almost worth the price of admission (which was $1.00), otherwise it was pretty awful.
The Dictator - I've had no real desire to watch this, but I listened to Jason Mantzoukas on Kevin Pollak's Chat Show earlier this week and decided to check it out for him - big JM fan.  There again, his scenes were great, but not many laughs otherwise (taking out the trash got the biggest non-JM laugh).
Premium Rush - this was fun, not Earth-shattering, but fun. Michael Shannon was a hoot as the "bad guy" - he seemed to be really enjoying his part.  Also starred the annoying actress from Heroes 2nd season who would cry black goo and kill everybody...but she didn't do that in this.  Didn't stop me from commenting on it every time she was on screen though.

Ha! I'm with you on the zither, Zarban.  Even after watching The Third Man several times, I still occasionally yell at the zither to shut the hell up.

Went to see a documentary this weekend - first time I've watched a doc in a theater - Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me.  I'm a fan of the band (they are my Firefly of music), so I'm a biased reviewer, but I really, really enjoyed it.  Not only for the vintage footage I had never seen, but also a fairly comprehensive group of interviewees.  There were a few slow, or belabored spots, and also a few times where I thought they left stuff out; but on the whole I'd recommend it even for people unfamiliar with the group.

Then I watched Sneakers, both to keep up the Robert Redford theme and also because this movie just makes me happy.  The cast, the score, the combination of story elements all make me smile.

I've always liked Jacob's Ladder as well - saw it a few times in the theater and had a VHS copy for a while.  May need to pick it up again as it has been many years since I watched it.  Twisted and sad, but ultimately uplifting (as I recall).

So far this week I've watched:
Some Like It Hot (love me some Jack Lemmon, and a damn hilarious movie);
The Third Man (finally got a Criterion bluray copy, so had to rewatch it - beautiful transfer and cinemetography, plus Orson Welles stealing the movie in basically one scene);
Miller's Crossing (my 3rd favorite Coen Bros film, and another one that's gorgeous to look at - love the dialogue and Gabriel Byrne's accent).

And I've got The Sting on its way.  Seen it before, but after the WAYDM commentary, I had to actually buy it and look forward to watching it again.

Saga is my absolute favorite monthly comic right now.  One of the few I still by in singles (versus trades).  Staples' art is fantastic - the piece she did on her process a few issues back was so cool.  I'm gushing a bit.  I hope it gets an oversized hardcover treatment in the future like Darwyn Cooke's Parker or I Kill Giants.

Only an hour in and it's already my favorite episode of a podcast ever.

Also, I am one of the many who's first film score to grab them was Star Wars.  I was 7 when Empire came out and I remember the first thing I asked my friend when he got back from seeing it was if they kept the same music.

Now back to listening...

Thanks!  I was freaking for a few minutes when I couldn't get the music ep.

I was about to type up a vague description of a movie I watched with my Dad as a kid on tv one night that had a sea turtle and some kids carved something in its shell and a guy drops a necklace in the ocean at the end and sea turtle.  Then I went and Googled it one more time and found it - The Bermuda Depths.  ABC movie of the week on January 27th, 1978.  Carl Weathers (apparently looking to make a turtle stew), Connie Sellica (pre-Hotel), Burl Ives...I'm guessing Burl Ives is in it due to it being made by Rankin-Bass.  Anyway, just in case someone ELSE's movie they couldn't remember happens to be this one, I went ahead and put the info on here.  Also, it's available on dvd now.

I too would like to hear you guys break down Hunger Games, then you can help me better articulate why I think it is just awful.

I can barely type, much less perform sfx wizardry, but I'll be contributing to Kickstarter and tweeting (all 8 of my followers will know the name Pink Five!).  I can provide moral support.  If you need someone to call every few days and just say (in an Eddie Izzard Druid voice) "Well done, everyone.  You're doing VERY well." - I can do that.

Yojimbo is so much of a Western, though, and has lots of humor. Naturally, it will depend on who you're introducing and why.

That's a good point.  Know your audience.  For my Dad, who is a big Western guy, I'd start with Yojimbo or Sanjuro.  My Mom, who is NOT a Western fan, would probably prefer Madadyo or Ikiru...nothing with a samurai or a period piece.

Owen, was that prompted by the DC reboot at all?  I've really liked Snyder's Batman and his Swamp Thing even more.  1st time I've read Swamp Thing monthly since Alan Moore's run.

ANSWERS:

Owen: My monthly comic list has gotten a bit out of hand, with 25 or so titles I'm reading.  Some are bubble titles, and some are limited series and ending soon, so that may drop a bit.  Here's the list...
Berlin by Jason Lutes (more like yearly than monthly), Rasl by Jeff Smith, Powers, Fatale (or Criminal or Incognito - whichever Brubaker and Philips are doing at the moment), Saga, Mind the Gap, Mind Mgmt, The Massive, Moriarty, Saucer Country, Whispers, America's Got Powers (Jonathan Ross, more than a talk show host), Spaceman (and anything Azzarello and Risso do), Secret, Manhattan Projects, The Walking Dead (in hardcovers, not monthly), Batman, Detective Comics, Swamp Thing, Animal Man, Batman & Robin, Batman, Inc., Batwoman, Birds of Prey, X-O Manowar (really excited about the Valiant re-launch, I was a huge fan in the early 90's), Harbinger, Bloodshot, Archer & Armstrong.  Wow, I may have a problem.

Big Damn Artist - I'm with Doctor Submarine, Kelly Clarkson's My Life Would Suck Without You...and at Christmas Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas Is You

We have quite the diverse group on this board, if this topic is any indication.

In response to Jimmy B, I'm ok today.  And thanks.

pastormacman, thank you as well.  And Happy Anniversary!  I too wore out the Star Wars soundtrack, and later the Empire soundtrack...and then the Raiders soundtrack.  My parents got pretty sick of hearing them, and eventually broke down and got me a Walkman.

And to both of you, I wanted to be a comic book artist for several years as a kid and made my own comic books.  Mostly Indiana Jones and The Shadow rip-offs.  Then I became friends with a guy at school that could REALLY draw, and it pretty much squashed that ambition.

Doctor Submarine - how far south of Connecticut were you when yow saw the 3 Super Confederates?  Here, not too surprising, but way up yonder seems out of place.

Yea, Ikea.  Only drawback is they are wall mounted, so you can't just casually rearrange your layout.  But they do look cool.  I believe they were $6.00 each and hold between 32-36 DVDs and blu-rays.

Wow, Jimmy B, thanks for sharing.  Who needs enemies with relatives like those, right?

"I just try to play that shit until it works."  Saniss, I'm going to put that on a t-shirt.  Plenty of big name drummers are self-taught.  Just gotta be able to feel it sometimes, and you can't get that from a book or lesson.  I taught mostly beginners and intermediate players as far as set, and the majority of the lessons were technique, reading music, rhythm patterns, etc.  When I was taking lessons myself, it got to a point where the lessons turned into more discussion than anything - particular players or songs, an article in Modern Drummer, hardware questions.

This should be fun...

My name is David.  I'm a 39 year old stand-up butt wiper, recently widowed (widowered?), and a successful procrastinator (yep, I'm at work).  I've been a student, a teacher, a musician (percussion), salesman, retail manager, student again, bank teller, and now accountant.  I live in the southeastern U.S., which means that by law I am required to love football...but I would even if it wasn't a law.  I love movies, obviously, and podcasts ABOUT movies.  When I'm not listening to podcasts about movies, I listen to music fo all sorts.  I collect vinyl and have way too much money invested in my sound system.  I also read and collect comic books...another monetary sink-hole for me.  When I'm not working...ok, when I'm AWAY from work, I'm usually engaging in one of these activities, or cooking.  I also love to cook.  Most days.  I'm a vegan living in a small southern town, so I pretty much HAVE to cook.

This is starting to feel a bit like Love Connection.  I'll edit in more stuff later maybe.  Anyway, AMA.

Questions:

Jimmy B - yes, please, tell us more of this familial murder attempt.

Sebastian - how's it going learning to play drums?  I used to teach private lessons and run drum camps in the summer during college (the 1st time at college).  Just curious if you are self-teaching (since you're already a musician) or taking lessons.

Quick iPhone pic of my collection.  I'm currently in between formats in the Hitchcock department, in case anyone noticed the scant selection.  Also, no District 9...haven't even seen it yet.  Did I add that one to my Embarrased To Admit I Haven't Seen post?

Dinosaurs vs. Aliens by Barry Sonnenfeld and Grant Morrison.  Can't be worse than this movie, can it?  And with Grant Morrison involved, it's bound to be trippy.
