Thanks Teague. Yeah my girlfriend was definitely unsettled, to say the least.

Ever woken up the morning after someplace you had no idea where was?

A very timely question. This past Thursday actually. I woke up in the hospital. I went snowboarding with a friend that day and the last thing I remember before waking up in the hospital bed was just that I had been snowboarding. I don't know exactly what happened because my friend was ahead of me on the slope and didn't see it, but I had a severe concussion. Apparently I hit my head very hard in some way, then I got up and made it down the hill and my friend said I was really confused so he took me to the infirmary. Then from there they medevaced me to the closest hospital where I stayed the night. I'm okay now, but I can't remember anything from the event (including the awesome helicopter ride), and I still can't really shake my head yet without it hurting. And my semester starts tomorrow! Yippee.

So my question is... What year is it, and is time travel a thing yet?

Same here! I worked at a UA store for a few years. Fantastic products, but now that I don't get 50% off anymore I don't buy as much... Stuff's expensive.

She asked me to her prom before we were dating. I cannot dance AT ALL, but I had to get out there and try, for her. I felt and looked like an enormous fool. I think I got laughed at once or twice by people I didn't know. Very embarrassing. Worked out in the end.

What was your favorite movie as a small child? Mine was 'An American Tail: Fievel Goes West'.

Yeah I found it hard to relate to most of the things this guy was saying. He didn't have me convinced of his point.

Honestly nowadays most kids TV shows sway the opposite way of what he was talking about. Just look at almost all the parents in kids TV shows. Actually, not just kids shows. Lots of mainstream shows too. The mothers are sensible and the fathers are bumbling idiots.

It's big in commercials too.

I guess this isn't exactly what the guy was talking about, but I felt it was worth mentioning.

I'll admit it, it's been a longass time since I watched that epsiode and had to go research to figure out wth you were talking about. but in the process of doing so I found this article: http://nonstopkarate.com/2011/05/27/plo … nd-scrubs/

Which makes it all worthwhile.

The hope of goth britta being really real can live on.

Ha, that was quite the sum up. I never realized Community was really just a compilation of historical documents.

I've seen Basterds a few times, and I still really like it. At first viewing I didn't like Django quite as much (still thought it was great), but it was definitely funnier. The KKK head-bags scene was hilarious.

HBC is definitely a general crowd pleaser. Everyone knows her from stuff like Harry Potter and what have you, and in the theater I was in, all she had to do was show her face and the audience started chuckling. Really, just that first shot of her walking down the stairs and everyone laughed.

I have a few other vague thoughts that are tough for me to really explain in text form, but I think my biggest issue with Les Mis was the "romance" between Cosette and Marius. They see each other across the street and simultaneously decide they need to spend the rest of their lives together? ...What? Cosette singing a song about how her life has completely changed... Because she saw a boy she thinks is cute? I... What?

I was actually a little bit bothered by it too. And what's funny is that the idea of love at first sight in a movie like this was not quite what bothered me. I just couldn't buy the idea of falling in love at first sight... with Amanda Seyfried. Haha I know some will disagree. I just don't think she's much of a jaw-dropper. But she did a fine job, although I thought it was funny that her singing voice was higher-pitched than young Cosette's.

What might be interesting is the selective use of HFR within a movie to help differentiate another world e.g. inside Tron's "Grid", or entering The Matrix, or with a level 4 Inception dream, or as a human is reincarnated as a Na'vi. So the real world is bog-standard 2D 24fps, and then it goes into 3D HFR as the protagonist plugs himself into... enters the portal... re-awakens, etc.

I dunno - just spitball'n

Yeah, that's what I was saying earlier. Wondering how that would look.

Agreed I think seeing the live stage performance would be much more impressive and immersive. They did a solid job with the movie though.

  Show
Apparently the grand finale when everyone sang "Do You Hear The People Sing" was the same way they ended the stage performance, with the entire cast on the stage singing (whether or not their character died or what have you), and it sort of doubled as a send off of the cast with an opportunity for them to bow and receive applause. When it happened in the movie I wasn't quite sure what it was supposed to mean, but now I get it. It just kinda threw me off a little bit, although I didn't really care in the moment because of how sensational the music was.

The complaints about Azog are interesting. I personally thought he was very well done.

Yeah, I thought he was well done for a CG character. I just think he wasn't quite real enough. It wasn't a huge complaint for me but I do think it would have been better with a guy in a costume. He wasn't gritty or textured enough. I don't know, maybe the LOTR Orcs spoiled me.

I saw it Thursday and I really liked it. I'm not all that familiar with Les Misérables in general. In my high school World History class we watched a good bit of one of the older adaptations, a non-musical one. So I knew the basic story but the musical performance was new to me.

I've also never seen a musical where almost every word was sung. They were singing the entire time, instead of having normal dialogue and then randomly breaking out into song. It took a little getting used to, but it didn't take long to get into it. Some moments didn't work so great but overall I enjoyed it. I thought it was beautifully shot and well-paced. The set design was fantastic.

The only two objections I had with the cast were Russel Crowe (wasn't really menacing, and his voice wasn't great) and Eddie Redmayne (frog voice). Jackman was pretty good, Anne Hathaway was amazing. I liked Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter, although I must say I'm a little HBC'd out at this point. She was great, just her typical character.

And of course, the music as a whole was outstanding.

So, what do you guys think of this movie? Are you interested in seeing it? If you've seen it, did you like it? Not your cup of tea?

Oh and one more thing:

  Show
Éponine sang mysteriously well after just having been shot in the diaphragm... Haha

I know they we're kinda playin' if for laughs in the trilogy (dare I call it that?) but I guess Gandalf is just totally high all the time?  And also he can talk to elves in his head?  Who apparently aren't there?

Galadriel can communicate with people telepathically. It's kind of her thing. And she was there, she just pulled a Batman when she left, for whatever reason.

Just to jump in and completely agree with Teague on the panning (and especially tilting). Those are the shots that don't work in HFR. I need to see it again to really nail down my thoughts on HFR, but I think it's clear that more thought needs to be paid to shots than even Jackson did here.

In a way, I'm actually glad he shot the films without completely taking the new medium into account. If he had filmed it differently just for 3D HFR, it might have slightly stunted the experience watching it in 2D 24p (which I preferred, mostly because I don't like 3D, not as much the frame rate).

And it's nice that the shooting style isn't so different from LOTR that it's hard to watch them together.

Of course I don't think that was Jackson's intent, but for my selfish reasons, I'm happy about it.

What about the idea of filming in multiple frame rates? Record some shots like pans in 24, and others in 48. Then project it in 48.

Or would switching back and forth make things even worse? I'd be interested to see how it would look.

That video is pretty crazy though.

Thank you! Haha I tried so many different things.

I know, it was a really weird thing to see.

Just had some end of the world drama here in Annapolis, MD! 70,000 people lost power tonight, after 4 transformers exploded (or a magical Mayan catastrophe) in the area. It was kind of wild actually. The sky was flashing very brightly, in different colors. It was very odd-looking, to me at least. I've never seen that before.

That's the same thing I saw from my house around 9PM. Anyways, my power is now back on and it seems like everything is going back to normal (apart from the blustery storm), but for a few hours there a lot of people actually thought it was the end of the world.

My girlfriend was working at the local mall when the power blew and she said everyone started freaking out.

Well, who knows, maybe the apocalypse has started, here in Annapolis. It is, after all, the former capital of the United States (1783–1784)...

Yeah, old Bilbo's makeup was noticeable in the 2D version as well.

Here's a lengthy article by Vincent Laforet on why he HATED the 3D HFR, after seeing The Hobbit in 3D HFR, 3D 24p, and 2D 24p, all in one night.

I agree with you on the fainting and the mind changing, but I liked the timing of the 'If we win we eats it whole' reaction.

I thought Freeman was good, I think he just wasn't given a whole lot of acting to do.
