I just listened to the commentary again. The "Galaxy Quest equivalent for Westerns" you were looking for is Three Amigos by John Landis. It's literally the same premise as Galaxy Quest.

(I didn't know where else to put it and it doesn't really deserve a separate thread.)
OK... It's been three days since "The Trouble With Edward" and I still can't even. I'm not able to even.
The writers have portrayed a Starfleet scientist as a complete shithead just for the sake of a "comedic episode". It just doesn't work within the Star Trek I've come to know and love.
Ironically, Criterion has released that movie (Chasing Amy) on DVD a few years later with the same commentary... and Kevin's apology
It's... not brilliant, to say the least. The script didn't venture far beyond obvious, clichéd statements about the world (that being said, Joaquin Phoenix did the best he could with the material he was given). I had hoped for so much more.
Is it a bad movie? Not really. It's just not nearly as good as it should have been. I still hope it does well at the box office (the opening weekend was quite big) - its financial success could pave the way for more unusual superhero (or supervillain) movies and that's exactly what we need.
We've got new trailers for Picard and Discovery:

(Apparently they're geoblocked on other sites.)
I could never understand why many people compared The Matrix sequels with the Star Wars prequels. The sequels aren't flawless, but at least they've got some interesting ideas behind them.
I saw those on the big screen when they first came out (good old 35mm prints in a cozy single-screen cinema; it went out of business in 2005 right after Revenge Of The Sith) and I still have the postcards they gave away with the tickets.
A movie that feels like a satire on Donald Trump's worldview, but (most probably) wasn't intended that way.
The first Rambo film was about something. Movies 2 and 3 delivered some silly action. I remember almost nothing about movie 4. Movie 5 was a chance to return to the serious tone and give some closure to the character. What we got instead is
Is there even a close second on dudes who gonna play a proper descent into madness? (Side-eye to you, Sam Neill)
Joaquin Phoenix? I guess we're gonna find out next month.
Holy fuck, that sounds really cool. Annihilation was already a quasi-adaptation of this story; it's about time they made a real one.
EDIT: OK, there have been some previous adaptations (I can vaguely remember the one with Wesley Crusher), but this one will take advantage of modern VFX
It has similarities with the original Revenge Of The Jedi poster...
...except for the color palette, which is a typical modern "blue with red".
A new Episode IX trailer premiered at D23:
Marty: I'd love to hear more about your neurological thing. (I've been researching brain-and-nerves-stuff lately.)
Doctors say it's mostly DCD plus some problems in the frontotemporal brain area showing up on the EEG. I've got small issues with memory and concentration (and then there's clinical depression). All of it is manageable for now, I'm getting some meds.
I watched all DiF films and listened to all the commentaries (in many cases more than once). It took many years
That's one of the consequences of a chronic illness - a lot of free time. I guess it's a good opportunity to thank you for making the past 8 years of my life much more enjoyable. DiF has been the gold standard for fan commentaries, you have made some truly great content.
(Until now it wasn't worth bringing up, but I've got a neurological disorder; basically, an area of my brain is malfunctioning. It's incurable, but not life-threatening; it just causes headaches and a few other unpleasantries.)
According to Box Office Mojo's estimates, we have a new winner - Avengers: Endgame has outgrossed Avatar worldwide.
I gotta say I'm happy that Avatar was dethroned. It's just a boring and forgettable retelling of the "white savior going native" story that has been told much more interestingly many times before. I watched it again recently and it felt very bland.
Also, Avatar 2 is gonna be an important case for anyone interested in box office performance. So many things have changed in the past decade. How many people will want to watch it? I'm very curious about that.
There's a teaser!
What can you do after something as huge as the Infinity War / Endgame two-parter? You can make
I had a lot of fun with it. Tom Holland's Peter Parker is just as adorable as ever and his friends are fun to watch too. Even Happy Hogan gets to do something interesting. After so many failed attepts (two movie series by Columbia/Sony) they finally got Spidey right, both in animation (Spider-Verse) and live action.
A WARNING: avoiding spoilers is crucial with this movie. Also, it's good to stay for the two post-credit scenes, they're important.
At the same time, The Abyss Blu-ray remains unreleased. An HD transfer has been made years ago, it's one of the worst cases of home video vaporware in history
the poster is awful
Sadly, that's the new standard for superhero movie posters. It's almost indistinguishable from the Avengers: Endgame poster embedded just a few posts earlier.
OK, what was that supposed to be? A Captain Marvel mockbuster? Who decided to spend $200 million on a script that uninteresting and where did all that money go? I've heard about extensive reshoots, but still... Logan (a total opposite of Dark Phoenix shot for half the money) would have been a perfect ending for the saga, but they just couldn't leave well enough alone.
Deeply disappointing.
May the warts be with you...

Littering.
Some people see no problem with tossing their used packages on the street. My house is bordered by such a street, which is a no-mans land on an ambiguous municipal boundary. It's thickly bushed which makes sprucing it up a physical pain. There are several regular litterers, I find the same products disposed of in roughly the same location weekly if not daily. Drink cans, glass pint liquor bottles, whole fast-food meals worth of trash wrapped up in the main paper bag.
How do you motivate people to knock that shit off?

And the title of the upcoming Picard show is...
I haven't seen the previousquel.
Oh... That may turn Endgame into a weird experience
"We're in the endgame now."
The movie to end all movies. Remember DiF's "dancing bear" analogy? The MCU, and the Infinity War / Endgame two-parter in particular, is like that dancing bear. This bear can dance well.
Go see it on opening night. You won't regret it.
The DC live-action film universe has finally taken a clue from its animated counterparts (Lego Batman and Teen Titans) and delivered an unpretentious movie that's simply fun to watch. Gone is all the self-importance and gloom of previous installments; even the costume is taken straight out of Orgazmo. Shazam! is no masterpiece and holds no candle to Lord & Miller works, but it manages to deliver some good entertainment. It may be the long-awaited turning point for DC.
