Edit out 95% of the dialogue in Prometheus and turn it into a 45 minute art film

That could actually work big_smile Such a Phantom Edit would've been a hit in Europe.

Enabling one of the foreign dub tracks on the DVD/Blu-Ray may prove an interesting experience. The DVD edition I own has some (Turkish, Hungarian and Czech).

Prometheus simply doesn't make sense even though it gives plenty of exposition - and as you say, the more they explain the worse it gets.    And now that Scott has hinted at what his take on the material was, it makes even less sense.  (*cough* Space Jesus *cough*)

That's probably because of all those rewrites (two different writers + Ridley's "take"). The earlier versions (mentioned in the commentary) might have made much more sense. Ridley just wasn't sure what he wanted.

Recently we had a thread about reviving Michael Crichton and other dead people. We need to add Arthur C. Clarke to the list, he really could save a lot of movie projects.

If Prometheus had less plot and dialogue, people (especially European film critics) could have endlessly gushed over the "hidden symbolism". But we've got all this exposition and, naturally, some people read into it (like here).

Still, for reasons I can't quite articulate, I find I'm still drawn to it.  Maybe it's as simple as "oo, shiny...," but I can't cite any other film that has this car-crash effect on me.

You can't help but admire the visuals. Ridley Scott could always deliver stunning eye candy (think Blade Runner or Kingdom Of Heaven).

When it comes to plot, the movie is seriously flawed, but IMHO not as terrible as some say. Making sense of the plot requires some wishful thinking (and the whole Internet has tried)... but then again, they said the same about 2001: A Space Odyssey (it took some time, but now it's regarded a classic). If Ridley was going for a 2001 feel with Prometheus, then his mistake was using too much dialogue (or using it badly - "that system has a sun", "100% DNA match" etc.). Unfortunately he didn't have Arthur C. Clarke to consult  sad

European DPs are just as brave as Aussie ones.

03:25 - Andrzej Jaroszewicz running through real explosions (no opticals or CGI) with a handheld camera.

The movie is On the silver globe (a weird Polish sci-fi flick from the 1970s). It can be found on YouTube in its entirety (with English subtitles). Unions? Communist countries didn't need no stinkin' unions  roll

Babylon 5 had tons of politics going on (both Human and alien). It worked... at least for me.

Stargate SG-1 had some as well.

- Where were the other drugs going?
- I never knew! I don't know! I derp to God!
- DERP TO ME!!!!
- It was in the Narrows. Cops only derp there when they're in force!
- DO I DERP LIKE A COP?!

At least one of The Next Generation movies should definitely be there...

Willard Huyck and Gloria Katz who just happens to be the writers responsible for the cinematic masterpiece Howard the Duck.

Their whole filmography is not impressive. American Graffiti (which, according to IMDb ratings, is their best movie) bored the hell out of me. It felt dry and wooden... just like a typical George Lucas film. I turned it off after 40 minutes.

Ok, I had religion in school, and Kali is not some evil cult goddess. She is the Goddess of eternal energy, the Punisher Of Evil, and is very popular in mainstream Hinduism. Kali is not Satan.

Most Western writers tend to think in terms of "Good" and "Evil" as described by Christianity or Judaism. For example, they almost always turn the Greek god Hades into an analogue of Satan. Some of them just fail to grasp the complexities of other religions and mythologies. Others simply assume that viewers are too stupid to understand concepts other than "100% Good"/"100% Evil".

I'm currently rewatching Stargate SG-1. For some reason, the writers decided that Sokar (an Egyptian deity) is Satan  big_smile

This trope is called "Hijacked By Jesus".

How about RoboCop or its sequel (Trey might have a few anecdotes)?

And then there's Stargate. It launched a successful sci-fi franchise, but DIF never discussed it  wink

The Star Wars DVDs and Blu-Rays are an egregious example of this.

Almost every scene has a weird color cast. It's almost like the film tinting process that was used in the 1920s and 30s. Perhaps that was George's intention - another throwback to old adventure serials... but it looks more like sloppy color timing to me.

The Beloved - "Sweet Harmony"

The most controversial music video of its time (although now the controversy seems a little quaint).

There was a fan documentary called Star Wars: Deleted Magic that showed original cuts of many sequences (the Cantina, the trench run etc.).

Not a bad idea...

David himself hates it (it's his most un-Lynchian movie). Why can't we get a really good adaptation of this popular book? The Sci-Fi Channel miniseries wasn't terrible, but it suffered from a low budget and thick Czech accents. Is Dune unfilmable? It deserves a DIF analysis.

Michael Jackson had many groundbreaking ones.

"Leave Me Alone"

"Black Or White"

"Speed Demon"

Dire Straits - "Money For Nothing"

I loved it as a kid, it was the most impressive thing aired on Polish TV in the late 1980s (it must have been the first time I saw computer graphics). It was awarded "MTV Video Of The Year" in 1986.

Soundgarden - "Black Hole Sun"

Reminds me of David Lynch movies.

I just re-watched Dreamcatcher. I learned that it was written by Goldman & Kasdan, so I gave it a second chance... but it's just as bad as I remembered it. The character stuff works pretty well, but the rest of the plot feels boring (it reminds me of The Phantom Menace - it's shot in a completely unexciting manner).

At least it gave us the memorable line "Easter Gay, go away!"...

There was a song, but it wasn't exactly chart material. But some satirical YouTube videos concerning the aforementioned nutjobs were pretty popular.

These people are now trying to make a movie out of their conspiracy theory.

A year ago an infant girl died in mysterious circumstances (her mother is now a suspect). Some people immediately used this tragedy to feel better about themselves. Last Christmas a Polish teenager committed suicide (allegedly under the influence of marijuana). It instantly became a point of heated debate among politicians (they even exploited the boy's mother). Unfortunately that's a universal phenomenon...
