I don't get Scott Pilgrim. Now that's an unpopular opinion in some circles wink The movie has its moments, but overall... meh.

I listened to the official commentary and the DIF commentary and I still don't get it.

Now THAT would have been an ending that fans hated.

I know I would. I don't mind spaceships/aliens, but in the case of Lost it would have been an ass pull of the worst kind.

In the same vein, any god or devil that shows up in Star Trek proves to be an alien of some kind. Why? Because the show has always been atheistic. Imagine that one of its writers suddenly pulled Yahweh out of his ass... It would be like cats and dogs living together. Mass hysteria.

The trope describing a long arc that's going nowhere is called "The Chris Carter Effect". For a good reason wink

Because the actors had some nice chemistry (and both were intelligent & good-looking people).

For me, the shark-jumping moment was probably the move from Vancouver to LA after season 5 (the Vancouver weather created a much spookier atmosphere than the sunny LA). Around that time they ran out of classic monsters & urban legends and switched to a lighter tone.

One day I felt masochistic and watched New Moon and Eclipse back-to-back. Oh crap... New Moon makes Plan 9 From Outer Space look like Citizen Kane. Ed Wood loved movies and it shows (his inept works are extremely charming). I feel no love from the makers of Twilight movies. They're just cynical cash grabs pandering to a crowd of squealing 12-year-old girls.

Branco wrote:

I can't believe that there have been FIVE Twilight movies.

I can't believe the series will end with five. It's a cash cow franchise. For the right amount of money, Stephenie will write further sequels - the saga can't get any worse and there'll always be squealing 12-year-old girls.

The Lost ending wasn't bad at all, the show had much bigger issues. I rewatched it recently from beginning to end - it sometimes feels like the writers simply didn't know where they were going. When multi-season arcs are considered, I think nothing beats Babylon 5 (it feels very consistent, maybe except Season 5...  but that's only because the show was canceled and then un-canceled).

I can't condone what he did (how can anybody condone raping a 13-year-old girl?), but I have to admit some of his movies work really well for me (like Chinatown and Rosemary's Baby).

I just re-watched The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button. Did the Academy really think it deserved 13 nominations? It's a relatively decent melodrama, but... 13 nominations? Really? Fight Club (a far superior movie IMO) got one lousy nomination for Sound Editing. The Academy once again fell for the old trick (Spielberg-like sentimentality) 14 years after it was spoofed in The Naked Gun 33 1/3. It's gotten extremely repetititve, we need to find new ways of baiting an Oscar big_smile

When I saw Benjamin Button for the first time, it immediately felt like a rehash of Forrest Gump. And, sure enough, I soon learned that the same guy wrote both movies. Benjamin Button is the more forgettable of the two. Will anyone remember it five years from now?

Am I the only one who finds the premise of The Cable Guy compelling? That poor kid raised by a TV set... he's not that different from us. Nowadays, he would feel at home here or at TV Tropes.

The movie could have been executed better, but I think it deserves much more credit than people give it.

Let me dust off this old topic...

One day I was playing with an application called Subtitle Edit. One of its functions is automated translation powered by Google Translate (Ctrl-Shift-G). I remembered the glorious Backstroke of the West translation, so I loaded English subtitles from a randomly picked DVD (it was the 2009 Star Trek movie) and Google-translated them a few times (choosing languages at random - I remember that Vietnamese was one of them). After Google-translating the result back into English, I couldn't believe my own eyes. It was almost to good to be true.

This file was laying on my hard drive for a few months. I figured this would be a good place to post it. The original text is white, the Google translation is yellow.

That cheesy show is still remembered with a great deal of nostalgia in my country - it was one of the few non-Disney Western cartoons aired on our TV during the communist era. The translation into Polish was extremely inept. If one would translate it back into English, we'd have another Backstroke of the West. For example "Man-At-Arms" would become "armed husband"  big_smile

Or you're more forgiving of the older shows.

Not necessarily. I actually find The Outer Limits 1990s revival to be better than the original show.

JMS of Babylon 5 fame worked on one of the new versions, although that might have been the syndicated episodes after the network canceled it.

I didn't see all of the 1980s episodes... Maybe I simply missed the ones he wrote. I'll have to check them out.

I love his work on Babylon 5, it's one of the few shows that actually pulled off a great multi-season arc (many tried to follow in its footsteps, especially after Lost, but most of them failed). On the other hand, his Thor movie wasn't that good (well, JMS was not the only writer on that one... too many cooks in the kitchen?).

A groundbreaking show that invented (or popularized) countless sci-fi/fantasy tropes. It's very uneven, but definitely worth watching. The 1980s revival isn't as good (for some reason it feels much cheesier than the original - maybe it's the bad visual effects).

Has anyone seen the 2002-2003 revival? Is it worth checking out?

OK, here's another - 2010: The Year We Make Contact is very underrated. 2001 fans criticize it for being too different from its predecessor, too literal. I think it's a decent movie on its own. Peter Hyams knew that he couldn't out-Kubrick Kubrick, so he decided simply not to try.
