fantastic review.. watched the movie last night and loved it.  however, the one thing you didn't mention was the score.  Johnny Greenwood (radiohead) did an amazing job of finding the perfect blend of dark and optimistic...often at the same time.  his score was spooky and really added to the movie.

Joaquin Phoenix was phenomenal in this movie. he looked terrible, his posture was awful, and in every scene it looked like he was one moment away from a total break (but unclear if it would be into a pool of tears, or run around beating the crap out of people).

the scene of Joaquin and Hoffman in jail was a brilliant way of showing their two personalities.  Freddie was kicking and jerking around in the cell, while Hoffman was calmly taking a leak.

So work decided to block me from this new url for some reason..but now i'm back (hooray).

not sure if it's been resolved, yet, but i'm more than happy to help out with audio editing.

Nice work Teague, really cool stuff.

I've been messing around with trying to score recently and I'd love to hear more about how you went about it.  I'm really curious how you approached writing to specific cues and if you had to change the timing or patterns in order to make things work.

Just finished Serling: The Rise and Twilight of TV's Last Angry Man.  Interesting book...i wished it'd focused more on the Twilight Zone years, but it was more of a straight ahead biography.  He wrote 92 of the 156 episodes of that show...unreal.  the dude was a machine.  smoked 4 packs a day...also unreal.

Rod Serling, Gary Larson, and Bill Watterson pretty much shaped me into the odd person that i've turned into.

Invid - nice Disorderlies reference.  Probably the Fat Boys finest film work to date.

also, this ep doesn't actually show up in the itunes feed for me.  not sure if that happened with anyone else.

ya...good stuff.    and possibly the best finish of any DIF ep.

thanks for the info.  seems like the takeaway is basically what Homer says to himself in the guatemalan insanity pepper episode..."Note to self: stop doing anything"

Since i'm still getting a hang of editing (and premiere in general), i'd love get some tips, tricks, critiques, etc. from you or anyone else out there.

i'll gladly buy you a burrito and a pint next time you're in the bay area.

here's a great write up on grantland.com all about Asylum and their business practices.  for better or worse, no trey references, though.

bummer... i was afraid of that.  After Effects will have to be down the road, i want to get deeper into Premiere first.

that being said, which export option/preset does give me the highest quality?

(23 replies, posted in Off Topic)

alright, i'm back with more questions.

I've gotten the hang of the basic functionality of Premiere, however, I haven't quite figured out what the best output format is.

the first couple attempts came out really crappy, then got worse when i uploaded them to youtube (not surprising).

I don't care about insane HD right now, I just want it to appear as clean as possible for youtube/vimeo/whatnot.

anyone have suggestions on the appropriate presets/formats?

thanks!

Jeffery - you mention the dvd  commentary.  how is it?  i can't imagine it's a 'sit around and drink' type commentary.  do they get pretty deep into it?

you want random? i got random.

here's a couple tunes i did recently.

Voorhees (A Jolly Good Fellow) - http://soundcloud.com/mcbrayer/voorhees

Turquoise  - http://soundcloud.com/mcbrayer/turquoise

and here's another.  i realize this goes against everything Trey has said, because it's literally the first thing I've ever done on Premiere Pro (obviously still learning how to even use the program...AND i only have a basic sony camera that also shoots video)...however, I am happy with the tune.

Took me a while, but i just got finished with the podcasts.  bravo.  you guys covered a ton of ground, with limited retelling of stories...not an easy feat.

i'm sort of exhausted after listening...i can't imagine how beat you must have been after (or how good those post cast beers were).

also, my wife and i went to see Fellowship in san diego.  it was opening week, so the place was packed and mostly silent.  about 20 minutes in, a cell phone went off.  the guy next to me picks up his phone and starts talking.

without any hesitation, my wife and i both turn and say "are you fucking kidding me?" at the same time... he sized me up, then sheepishly put away his phone.

the movie (and marriage) continued without any more interruptions.

i finally got premiere pro 5.5 and i'm slowly trying to learn it.

i have, what might possibly be, a stupid question.

It seems that Premiere takes nearly all video formats, but when i try and import clips from my iphone, it's saying there's no audio/video elements to the file.  however, the file works fine on my computer.

any suggestions on what might be going on there?

thanks!

Just My Type - it's a book all about the history of fonts
on deck is  -  Absolute Monarchs: A History of the Papacy - i think it's going to be a VERY slow read, but as a jaded ex Catholic HS student, i'm curious to read it

re: Batman and Robin

this was the first movie that i ever actually considered walking out on.  at one point i almost stood up and yelled, "you have to be kidding me!" and walked out...but i didn't.  i thought that there was no way it could continue to be a pile of steaming dog turds and that it had to get better.  so i sat through it.

it never got better.    i almost want to see it again to see if i was being overly harsh, but based on the commentary, it sounds like i was right the first time.

happy friday DIF'ers!

My buddies and I just finished up our new album and I wanted to share some tunes with you folks.  We're really happy with how it turned out and want to stuff it in as many ears as we can.

The next step is to start making some videos for it (*eyes DIF community suspiciously*).

http://soundcloud.com/earthtoeugene/checking-my-beat

you can download the album for free, as well as stream it on our website www.earthtoeugene.com.

as always, let me know if anyone is interested in working together on film/video/sound projects.

Cheers,

Ryan
