Also, the little Silent Running graphic in the livestream is another lettering project of mine. Drew this the night before the recording. I'm gettin' there.

Trey will be pleased to know that despite my age (35), I'm one of those few who absolutely loves and respects this film. I saw it when I was a kid (on PBS, in fact). I laughed, I cried, I thought about things. This may sound like a contradiction of terms but I feel this film is an under-appreciated classic.
By the way, the robot in Lost In Space and the robot in Forbidden Planet are easy to mix up because they were designed and built by the same guy, who coincidentally JUST DIED last week, at 100 years old.
I caught bits and pieces of it on TV, may have caught the entire thing once (I was two when it came out). The entire thing just seemed silly. Despite the visuals, it was no Star Trek. Also, I probably unfairly linked it with The Starlost.
(My dad loved that show. He was the most casual SF fan you can imagine. The worst original Trek episodes were his favorites)

Fun fact: Rainn Wilson played a creepy asexual embalmer on Six Feet Under. Unsurprisingly, this character's favorite movie was Silent Running
Netflix finally sent this one to me. My one observation? My dad had the EXACT same portable chess set. Why they sent an antique up there with these guys, I'll never know.

Just caught this one for the first time last night and did the DiF this morning. It's kinda funny how four years of slow apocalypse can change priorities—on the episode Teague is all "Yeah, I'm kinda on the other guys' side, what Bruce Dern did is excessive," whereas my emotional response throughout the movie was "Fuck yeah, kill those assholes, save the trees."
I tend to not ask logistical questions when I watch movies these days, but the one gaping hole for me in this one was made by the fact that there's a live hawk flying around the forest dome. That plus the rabbits and squirrels would seem to indicate a predator/prey thing going on, and just . . . how is an ecosystem like that sustainable in an enclosure that small? Surely at some point the hawks will have killed everything. Or, if it's just the one hawk and there's no mate, it'll die first and then the rabbits will take over the entire dome.
(Also, is there a day/night cycle? Like, at all? Especially when the whole place switches to being lit with artificial lamps?)
