Topic: The ArtFx films thread

I am currently a student at a private school which specializes in VFX. Its four year course includes a final year which focuses on making a short movie - live or full CGI. I still have two years to go; I'm like a baby.

This year's short movies are currently being released one by one. I figured you guys might like to check them out. I'll also post links to older projects I personally loved - some gems were made. No pressure there for me. big_smile

- 2013 -

Thousandth Street

Basically, this is one big tribute to Blade Runner. The picture looks fantastic, and the movie's slow progression creates an interesting atmosphere.

Amasia

Matte painting freaks, you're going to love this one. It's a contemplative movie, with some incredible shots. Some astronomy stuff in it too - it pretty much pushes all my buttons.

- 2012 -

Get Wild

How about going back to some 60's good old style? A fun musical movie.

Terraform

A mother tells his child how mankind conquered Mars. Incredible space shots.

Voile Noir (Blackout)

You like planes? Here ya go.

Re: The ArtFx films thread

I am borderline astonished by most of these.

This is a school?

How does the pipeline work for production? How many artists, how long?

Re: The ArtFx films thread

One year, teams of four/five, sometimes six people. Freelance students (students who aren't part of a specific team) help the others. The school basically becomes a studio for the year for them.

The students within the team are everything in the production: directors, artists, etc. They schedule the whole production process for the year, usually shoot during autumn and spend the rest of the year editing and post-processing everything.

Year one focuses on making the students' culture and basic skills grow: photography, sculpture, art history, drawing, etc.

Year two's main course is 3D. I learned to use Maya and did some awesome projects. Some introduction to animation and After Effects too, a short movie (all practical, no VFX), and the usual (more photography, drawing and stuff).

In third year, you have to choose between three (soon four) specializations: VFX (as in compositing and stuff), 3D CGI, and animation. I chose VFX, that's what I'm in it for. smile During the last two years, students tend to specialize themselves even more: matte painters, compositing artists, etc.

All these films are presented in June to a jury composed of various people representing studios (we got MPC, Double Negative and stuff- mainly studios from the London area, or french).

And, yeah. The results are amazing. ArtFx is growing more popular every year. Last year, every single student was hired by a studio less than three weeks after the jury.

Re: The ArtFx films thread

Yes, it's simply amazing what this school is capable of. Some former students have had the opportunity to work on big movies thanks to this. The Prometheus itself was designed by a guy from ArtFx. Makes you dream a bit.

Re: The ArtFx films thread

Quick digging of this thread because two of last year's movies got nominated for this year's VES Awards. The first one is Initium (see post above) and the other one I haven't posted here yet:

I'm so very proud of them all. Currently working on the concepts for my own movie I'll make next year, this is highly motivating to me.

Re: The ArtFx films thread

Well, it's that time of the year again. The jury took place two weeks ago, and among the usual guests (MPC, Framestore, The Mill, etc. - all the big ones, really), a new one came to visit us this year. Its name? Industrial Light & Magic, baby. There is a good chance a few from this year's graduation are going to work on Episode VII.

Anyhoo, here are my picks this year.

Revolucion

South America
Between duty and truth....
The first steps of a young reporter.

One of the few films coming out of this school that are actually thought-provoking. The VFX work is practically flawless.

Engrenage (Gears)

In this race to survive, can you distinguish reality from imagination?

A well-edited, riveting film. I especially loved the atmosphere, and there is some amazing environment work in it.

Speedbob

In the farthest corner of space....
The story of a crazed oil farmer: SPEEDBOB

I think the thumbnail speaks for itself. This one is pure fun, and smells of oil, beer and banjos.

If you like them, please feel free to share around. Any help to increase their visibility is welcome.

Next year's my turn. I'm thrilled. smile
