Re: VFX - The Final Frontier. What's left?

Squiggly, how much Tintin had you been exposed to prior to the movie?

If the answer is none or very little, it wasn't for you. You could argue that every thing should be made for as wide an audience as possible, but that's a position I don't agree with.

The other favorite I like is successful face replacement, so you can have stuntmen doing crazy stunts for real and then replace with the real actor when necessary.

I just saw Face / Off for the first time, and with Woo's slo-mo it's nothing but obvious stunt men, so that schlock could have used some actual face replacement (and wire removal).

not long to go now...

Ya, I wish he had that available. The boat chase is such an awesome action sequence (and all done for real) that I don't at all care, but ya, it's very noticeable if you're looking for it.

It's very noticeable even if you're not looking for it, really.

Yep, that's the one shot I was thinking of. It's SUCH A COOL SHOT though.
For what it's worth, even James Cameron is guilty of this. The motorcycle jump in T-2 is an obvious stunt-man

Pre-face-replacement, this is just what you had to live with if you wanted a crazy stunt like that.

Oh, there are many films that have obvious stunt doubles and Face/Off is not the only John Woo US film to be guilty of it. His use of slow motion shows them clearly but yes, you can still get cool shots. I love real practical stunts and actually don't mind seeing the stunt performer's faces smile

Oh and the stuntman on the bike in T2 is wearing an Arnie mask, apparently.

Yes, I'm assuming if I had watched it for the first time on VHS in the 90s on a standard TV, I might not have noticed so much, but today in 1080p on a big wide-screen, it's very noticeable - and doesn't really stand the test of time for a fresh viewing. Wires everywhere too.
