Topic: True Detective

If you haven't hopped aboard the hype train yet, you're missing out on some masterful television and storytelling. Even with only two episodes thus far, I'm already prepared to declare this is the show that will take Breaking Bad's throne as the critical darling of television. Here's a rundown for the uninitiated:

+ Neo-Noir Mystery
+ Written by novelist Nic Pizzolatto (Galveston, Between Here and the Yellow Sea, Wanted Man)
+ Directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga (Jane Eyre)
+ Anthology Format
+ Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson and Michelle Monaghan lead the first season

Why am I hyped? While cop shows are arguably the most common genre on all of television, this series offers a very unique take on the premise thanks to its neo-noir tones. The writing has been loaded with tremendous bits of character building, philosophical musings, and surprising but logical twists. The anthology format allows the show to neatly tie-up it's story by the end of each season, meaning we won't have mysteries dragged on and on to keep viewers interested in the hope of finally seeing resolutions (looking at you, LOST). We also don't have to worry about the show pulling any punches or looking like a generic police procedural thanks to HBO being HBO. Speaking of which, the cinematography is nothing short of fucking spectacular; not only is the imagery breathtaking but it also enhances the tone of the series. It isn't Roger Deakins levels of eye porn, but it's close.

The show also utilizes multiple timelines to tell the story as McConaughey and Harrelson's characters reflect back on the case after a similar murder shows up 17 years later after the original. This gives viewers great insight into the psyche of both characters and how the case changed their lives. The performances are all tremendous with McConaughey already locking up the Emmy for Lead Actor in a Miniseries. I know that's a bit much to say after just two episodes, but his performance is that good.

TL;DR - GET HYPE

Re: True Detective

Hear, hear.

I was so on board with this show 10 minutes into episode one. I had high expectations, which so far have been met.

By now it's an old refrain, but McConaughey really is awesome. Harrelson too.

I think a lot of mystery-genre television actually doesn't execute mystery storytelling very well. TRUE DETECTIVE is doing something cool in that the characters, their relationships and backstories, are sort of a mystery too, in addition to the central whodunnit. The going back-and-forth in time doesn't at all feel forced. Really impressed with this show so far.

Re: True Detective

Love the show so far.
Both McConaughey and Harrelson are amazing.
Love the cinematography, the color palette and the framing is outstanding. The composition of some of the scenes are so well executed it is just pure poetry.

There is one thing that has been occupying my mind lately. That's the illegal downloads of shows like True Detective and Game of Thrones.

Torrenting is as much of a problem here in Iceland as in most other countries. But because we are getting both True Detective and GoT the day after they are shown in the States, I hardly ever hear about anybody illegally downloading these shows. I believe the this is the best way to combat illegal downloads. Offer the material at the same time (give or take a few days) at reasonable prices (here it comes with a tv station most Icelanders have at least access to if they are not subscribers themselves).

I'm not saying anything new here and I have nothing to back it up but anecdotal examples but I have this feeling that these shows are being downloaded here much less than other shows.

Re: True Detective

The cinematography on this show is fucking amazing. Looks as good as or better than anything I've seen theatrically released in the last year. So many amazing shots.

Re: True Detective

The last five minutes of this latest episode was simultaneously the coolest and the weirdest thing I've seen so far this year.

Someone needs to compile all of the McConaughey character's musings into an anthology. Or make some motivational posters. Well, I guess tumblr is already on it...

The fucking Super Bowl is gonna make us wait an extra week for Episode 4. God dammit.

Re: True Detective

That long take at the end of tonight's episode is the most awe inspiring shit I've ever seen on television.

Re: True Detective

It is unreal. Easily the best non-cg tracking shot since Children of Men. One of the best things I've ever seen pulled off on TV

Also holy shit, apparently it was a true single take, no CG splices at all  0_0

Re: True Detective

It wasnt done in one shot simply for the sake of doing it in one shot, either. That's what I got off on. It wasn't a gimmick. At that point in the episode, it was simply the most effective way to tell the story and bring us into the moment-to-moment experience of Russ. The focus is on the action. IOW, it's not one of those one-shot takes that implicitly asks us "How cool is it that we're doing this in one shot, y'all?" It's entirely serving the action, what's going on.

Doesn't tracking shot imply the use of a dolly? I'm pretty sure this was all steadicam.

It was Steadicam. The operator should get some kind of special medal.

Re: True Detective

Also, that shot of Rust leaving the diner after Maggy mentioned his wife was fantastic. I'm gonna have to find HD clips of this show to post in here. In the meantime, this should suffice:

Re: True Detective

I'm catching up now. I like it. Beautiful cinematography, best I've seen on TV in a while. McConaughey is real good, but I actually like Harrelson's reactions to his pseudo-philosophical bullshit a lot more.

I'm not at all sold on the structure, though. At this point, I'm not sure how much the 2012 stuff adds to the story. I guess we'll see how they tie it together, though.

The case in 1995 drastically changed the life of Woody, and more than likely, McConaughey. They went through hell and back with this shit. Yet, they somehow failed in fully solving the case as evident by the new killing in 2012. If the show presented this in a linear fashion, it would feel hokey to have a giant 17 year jump to 2012 at some point in like Episode 6. Imagine catching up with the two of them with the killer back at it again, then spending an entire episode getting acquainted with how things are different in 2012 before moving on with the case; it'd kill the momentum. Thanks to the interview segments, we get a perspective on where they are now in their lives and the lowdown of what's going on in 2012. When the eventual time jump happens, and the segments from 1995 slow down or cease, it's going to feel a lot more natural and fluid because we won't have to waste time with familiarities, we'll be able to go full speed ahead to the finish of the story.

Re: True Detective

I guess you're right, but at this point (to me) it kind of feels like the 2012 stuff is just there to get character insight into dialogue. Is there much of a story going on that's been revealed? Other than the stuff with the killer, which at this point seems to just be the pretense to get Hart and Cohle into an interrogation about the 1995 case. But like you said, if they do move more exclusively to the 2012 story at some point, it's good to get all this stuff out there.

Re: True Detective

I'm almost positive they're going to move exclusively to 2012 at some point. Considering; and this is a very very mild spoiler but I'm putting it in brackets anyway for anyone who doesn't like teasers:

SPOILER Show
The teaser for the next episode included a shot of 2012 Cohle outside of the interview room.

I think eventually, probably by the midpoint of Episode 6, it's going to be almost all 2012 stuff. I'd also be shocked if the last episode wasn't entirely in 2012, save for maybe a scene or two.

Re: True Detective

I'm so glad they pulled that off. I freakin' love sequence-shots. I haven't felt this deep into the action since Children of Men.

It's perfectly well executed, and so much is happening during this shot, it's crazy. No, Children of Men's car shot was crazy; this was insane. I really hope there'll be a BTS of this.

And let's not forget the rest of the episode, either. I thought it was really intense. It shows this world of violence and drugs in a very powerful way, as we're in it with Cohl. McConaughey keeps getting more and more awesome.

Re: True Detective

It being a miniseries rather than a standard TV show, I'm guessing the connections between some of these things are going to be made clear in the home stretch. Right now we're about halfway home. Midway through a first viewing of PULP FICTION, you're sitting there going "So, what the heck was all that business at the beginning with the two British people, and what does it have to do with anything?" A perfectly valid question at that point in time. The correct answer to which is "Keep watching."

At this point, I'd almost go so far as to say that the central mystery in this mystery is not "Who's the killer?" but "What the fuck happened to/between Cohle and Hart and just how much are they each trying to hide in 2012?" The latter question interests the two black present-day detectives who interview Cohle/Hart as much as the former question. (I like that the black detectives stand-in for we the audience in many ways, but they're also kind of mysterious and distant to us. Often it's hard to tell what tree they're barking up.) I really enjoy how Marty seems to be the same arrogant prick all these years later, but Russ has gone off the deep end, long hair and tallboys in the afternoon.

My girlfriend believes the story will end with Cohle and Marty reuniting for one last case and going out to catch their man. I don't know about that. That's too trope-y, it seems to me. Everything about this show indicates that this is the kind of story in which maybe the bad guy gets away with it.

Re: True Detective

Just finished watching the fourth episode (they are aired one day later over here)

Guess who will be buying the series on BlueRay*

Few random disjointed thoughts.
That sequence (The Job) might just be a new benchmark in TV cinematography. Part Training Day, part Children of men. Get ready for a deluge of similar scenes in the fall of 2014.

The cinematographer, Adam Arkapaw, gets it. It's interesting to look at his IMDB. Nothing but shorts and documentaries and then Top of the Lake and now True Detective.

I guess I can just go ahead and remove "I don't think Matthew McConaughey is a bad actor" from the unpopular opinion thread.

I got a strong Heart of Darkness vibe in the scenes where Rusty is ingratiating him self to the gang. Is it just me?

Re: True Detective

I'd like to mention the opening credits are now my favorite ever.

Seriously, I could watch an hour of these. The music is a perfect choice and creates an amazing atmosphere. The effects used, especially with the characters' outlines, are very effective. The whole thing is incredible, and I'd make an awesome compositing exercise.

Huh. There's an idea. I need to talk with my Nuke teacher.

Re: True Detective

Just watched the first 3 episodes on our "On Demand" and I absolutely love it so far.  The last shot of episode three of the "monster" gave me chills.  Very well told.  Hopefully episode 4 will be up when I get home from work tonight.

Re: True Detective

I'm guessing some have already read it, but here's an article about the long take confirming the one used in the episode was done in a single shot, with some more interesting details: http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/172200 … take.jhtml

The whole thing felt so natural I didn't even wonder how the hell they managed the fence bit.
