Topic: What's your weakness?

See that trailer? Looks like a ridiculous, over the top, terrible, action movie, doesn't it. But you know what? I'll probably go see it. Not because I think it'll actually be good, not because I love The Three Musketeers, but because of that airship. Yup, purely because of that airship. See, it's a weakness of mine, I love steampunk-esque airships. The more prominent, numerous, steampunky, and awesome your airships are, the less I care about the quality of your novel/movie/game/what-have-you. I just fucking love airships. So, my question to you is, what's your weakness?

Re: What's your weakness?

I must say, this looks like fun. That last line suggests that the dialog might not *sparkle*, but I'd give it a shot. I'm a sucker for high adventure in general. National Treasure, Sahara, Shanghai Knights.... I have no excuse.

I think what I respond to is highly skilled adventurers "going to work" and facing almost certain defeat. I blame Indiana Jones.

Ok, I'll admit I'm being rather harsh toward the film, mostly because of the 3D aspect. I hate watching films in 3D.

Re: What's your weakness?

That looks like a Wild Wild West version of the Dumas' classic. Can't say I like it. Maybe it will have an absolutely cracking theme song, which is what made the Sheen/Sutherland/Pratt version so great. The new foursome look interesting, it's always fun to see what new actors bring to the roles.

My weakness? Vikings. I will see any film with an even vaguely dark age/medieval Scandinavian bent. Sometimes this means subjecting myself to absolutely awful films. The latest was Valhalla Rising, a film so shit it still makes me angry. I've even tracked down Russian or Polish films where I haven't understood a word... just to see a longship and some blond hair fella do something horrible with an axe.

My other weakness is for films set in Ancient Greece and those that feature the Greek gods or any ancient mythological gods. I even liked that Percy Jackson film purely on the basis of its cool demigod premise. I'd also watch Clash of the Titans over Avatar anyday of the week.

Maybe the upcoming Thor can combine these two elements into an irresistable taste?

Oh no no, it probably IS a ridiculous, over the top, terrible, action movie. I'm just saying that I'll probably enjoy it on some level. Not only have I seen and somewhat enjoyed the movies I mentioned, I own a prop saber from Shanghai Knights and a prop cannonball from Sahara.

I also own a small but embarrassing collection of grindhouse schlock on DVD and I've done—I mean I have a close personal friend who has done—5 audio commentaries for movies from The Asylum.

Pathfinder was a big disappointment. I not sure why. Have you seen The Vikings with Kirk Douglas and Tony Curtis? Hilarious...ly stirring historical drama.

Re: What's your weakness?

You bet I've seen The Vikings, several hundred times. I absolutely love it. It's surprisingly dark, compare it to Spartacus which features the same leads. It also rather amazingly avoids the worst cliche of vikings - no horned helmets in sight! The Vikings and The 13th Warrior are probably the best (and only decent ones).

Pathfinder is pretty bad, its vikings are more Frazetta-style barbarians than scandinavian warrirors but I think it fails because it never quite fulfils on its promise. The central character never goes through any sort of cultural conflict. The antagonists are complete shits with few attractive qualities, so there are no surprises in character development. It's so unoriginal the hero is the best Indian and the best viking (aren't white people brilliant?!). I also remember it had a really weak second act, and a whole lota minutes spent in a cave which didn't go anywhere. That said, there are a few surprises. One being a trap that backfires.

Battlefield speeches.

Wallace, Theodan, Leonidas... doesn't matter.  You put some burly man in front of a bunch of crazy fuckers with swords, have him say "we're totally gonna die but FUCK ITTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!" and my nipples are hard for the next day.

When.

Re: What's your weakness?

Thought of another. What can I say? I have weaknesses. Military porn. Specifically, American military porn. Helicopters, jets, tanks, aircraft carriers, boots on the ground. It's probably why I liked Transformers 2 more than the first chapter (though for me that's like picking the lesser weevil). Michael Bay does it quite well.

It's also why I fucking loved Battle LA. It's as if Independence Day (be still my beating heart, F18s flying in formation!) and Black Hawk Down (which is the ultimate in modern day war films) got together and had a bastard child. It also has some emotional punch, which was pretty surprising.
