Re: Pick a plane

I like the F-14 for the two man cockpit. Having a 2nd person in there would be nice for me.

God loves you!

Re: Pick a plane

I pick the greatest and most awesome plane in the universe.

It's a plane designed so that if the shit goes down on the ground, you can lead the free world from it for a week or two.

Seriously. The Tardis has a pool and several squash courts. Does a star destroyer have that? No.

You know what a star destroyer has? Health and safety classrooms and infirmaries to mend the broken bones of people who fall off the precarious catwalks and ledges with no railings.

Oddly, both have bunk beds.

In fact, it suddenly seems obvious to me that stormtrooper armor was never MEANT to stop blasters. It's only meant to reduce injuries from falls and banging your head into half-closed blast doors.

Why else would they wear it even in the middle of their own impregnable military base?

I've always been partial to the F-16.  My dad used to take me to air show all the time when I was younger an I loved looking at the F-16.  It's one of the most versatile aircraft ever made.

I also like the flexibility of the F-22.  It may be less maneuverable than the F-16, but it makes up for it in so many other ways.

F-16's are up there for me too; I grew up with Iron Eagle.

"These are F-16C's 'Coop!"

Granted, that's from the sequel, but still.

Also, F-14s, care of Top Gun.

Iron Eagle has the greatest montage to feature a Twisted Sister song in all of film history.

Re: Pick a plane

Both Iron Eagle and Top Gun are so delightfully '80s.  I have to wonder what the reaction at the time was from flyboys when the wrong forces use the wrong planes.  Pardon me while I get all "internet" for a minute:

Top Gun
The MiG 28 is a fictional aircraft, even today:
http://www.impdb.org/images/thumb/1/1d/TGT-38.jpg/500px-TGT-38.jpg

In the film they used F-5s with a new paint job.

Iron Eagle
In this film the bad guys fly MiG 23s.
http://www.impdb.org/images/thumb/5/55/IEII_Kfir_8.jpg/500px-IEII_Kfir_8.jpg

Actually those are really Israeli IAI Kfirs:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/bd/DN-ST-85-08601.jpg/300px-DN-ST-85-08601.jpg

Fun fact: "Twenty-five modified Kfir C.1s were leased to the US Navy and the US Marine Corps from 1985 to 1989, to act as adversary aircraft in dissimilar air combat training (DACT).  These aircraft, designated F-21A Kfir..."

While Top Gun chose a fictional number to designate it's MiGs, the MiG 23 did exist at the time, flown by among others, Libya and Syria:

Iron Eagle II
Here's where things get even more interesting.
When the Russians show up, they appear to be flying American F-4s...:
http://www.impdb.org/images/thumb/c/c2/IEII_F4_5.jpg/500px-IEII_F4_5.jpg

Again they went with a MiG designation that existed, and was used by the nation in question at the time; the MiG 29:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a1/HuAF_MIG29UB.jpg/300px-HuAF_MIG29UB.jpg

I would think if they needed to use a US plane for the movie the F-15 would have made a better choice:

Also the IAI Kfirs return to play MiG 23s.

Now I know there are perfectly good reasons for the films using the planes they did, and I'm not knocking them for it, so I'll leave it at that.

And now a word from our sponsors!

Re: Pick a plane

Wow,
lots of info. How do you pay attention to all those planes going so fast in the movies? wink

I think DiF should do "Top Gun"

God loves you!

Re: Pick a plane

Helps to have a really short attention span. wink

Another fun fact: Top Gun became responsible for quite a number of young men joining the Navy to fly planes.  The Navy SEALs saw that and commissioned that god-awful film called, well, you figure it out.  Winning!

Re: Pick a plane

The SEALs did a better job when they used a Godsmack song for their commercial. Sponsoring movies may not have been the best idea.

Though, the Air Force has had much better commercials of late, especially appealing to sci-fi geeks like myself:

Re: Pick a plane

"Set partly in the future..."?  The Air Force has frickin' Transformers in that ad!

*Off topic military advice follows:

For the record, anyone thinking of joining a branch of service here's a tip: go Air Force.  Whether you're just looking to do a few years to get some college money, need some water to tread in for a few years, or you genuinely want a career, Air Force is the way to go.

Unless you really love the water (and loud confined spaces and no privacy), or you want to go special ops (SEALs), or the idea of landing an F/A-18 on an aircraft carrier in the dead of night in the rain appeals to you...then by all means go Navy.

If you just want to be a badass, nothing says badass like USMC.

Unless you want to go special ops (Ranger, Green Beret, Delta), or fly helicopters, there's really nothing compelling about the Army.

Re: Pick a plane

As a guy planning on enlisting, we should totally have that talk, Mr. Vayda.

Super Hornet

F/A-18 Super Hornet. The closest thing human beings have ever come to building an actual X-Wing.
