Re: THE LORD OF THE RINGS

Congrats guys - brilliant effort. There will be tales told by bards about your feat - long into the future and in far away lands.

I wonder if people will ever say, 'Let's hear about Dorkman and Trey and the LOTR Commentary marathon.' And they'll say 'Yes, that's one of my favorite stories. Dorkman had real stamina, didn't he, Dad?' 'Yes, my boy, the most famousest of commentators. And that's saying a lot'
You've left out one of the chief characters - Teague. I want to hear more about Teague.

You guys are fucking insane. I wish I could have done this with you, but that'll be for a next time. Still popped in the chat for a while, though.

Congrats to everyone. You guys rule.

Re: THE LORD OF THE RINGS

lol, I pretty much missed the whole thing. I only made it through Fellowship. I fell asleep during Two Towers, and when I woke up, you guys had just started Return of the King. It was late so I went to bed.

Re: THE LORD OF THE RINGS

OH MY GOD...it was Saturday....it was SATURDAY....god dammit.
Eddie, your menu sounded AMAZING.

I can't believe I missed it....I hope someone survived to post the podcast on Monday.
Well done gents.

Re: THE LORD OF THE RINGS

So did Dorkman ever tap out for ROTK? Sincere props to him for coming so prepared to these and for saying stuff that wasn't simply regurgitating the official commentaries (which would have been easy to do).

Re: THE LORD OF THE RINGS

Dear Down in Front—

You did it! It was epic and exhausting and awesome. I know of only a couple of other marathon commentary sessions, but certainly none for Lord of the Rings The Really Long Editions. I am astonished that you even made the attempt, but I suppose I shouldn't be. Down in Front has pushed commentary after commentary out of its collective vagina for years now, often in the form of twins. Why should triplets daunt you—even if they ARE the size of preschoolers?

I bow especially to Michael and Trey, who carried the ball for almost the whole game at a consistent Belgian.5 level* of quality. But thanks to all the commentators. Everybody had something interesting to say.

And we also served who only stood and chatted. I'm amazed at the turnout and, altho the porn spam bots were annoying and occasionally terrifying, the quality of the chat. That was great fun, except for Fixed Dave, who is now my mortal enemy forever for dissing my hilarious VISIT SCENIC X jokes.

Warning: I'm probably rewriting this post as you read it.

Oh, those were jokes? Gosh I'm sorry, you should have said.

Having slept, I'd like to echo Zarban's comments; it would have been impressive to simply attempt this marathon, let alone succeed. Congratulations again everyone, and to the impending "Cooking with Eddie" spin off.

Re: THE LORD OF THE RINGS

Right off I want to say is I can't believe that we actually survivied doing the entire LotR series.  Knew that it would take a long time to complete but that was something else entirely.  Despite all that, I greatly enjoyed the entire show and helped to keep me from leaving and/or passing out.

Probably everyone that was a part of it will take time to recover from it but I think I can say that it was all worth it.  If you wanted to do something like this again then go ahead as I'm sure that it'll be just as entertaining as this was.

I had a blast for the full 13 1/2 hours.  Oh and I'm using that "talky, talky, talky" thing during soundchecks from now on... been walking around all morning saying that to myself.

Re: THE LORD OF THE RINGS

Well it was great night last night I made it through all 3 films and too much beer. The stupid daylight Savings time really messed with me for my 8am shift I'm on the east cost so I only got a couple hours sleep after everything. Hope to do something like this again with DIF.

CONGRATS on the marathon!
Bummed I missed the live recording and chat... had to deliver pizza.
I did, however, listen to a solid mix of Howard Shore and Led Zepplin in spirit though!

Re: THE LORD OF THE RINGS

Nice work on the marathon. I only caught some of Fellowship but look forward to listening to the rest. Thanks to all of you.  big_smile

Re: THE LORD OF THE RINGS

I think the real hero of the marathon was definitely the fifth microphone encouraging everyone not "on deck" to pitch in contributions to the conversation, challenge our points or add more and keep things moving.

Thanks to everyone for all the virtual and IRL fist-bumps. As the guy who first pitched the idea and subsequently forced everyone's hand, I considered it my responsibility to carry the conversation if necessary -- which, happily, I never felt it was. There wasn't any moment in the entire 12+ hours where I felt us grasping for something to say. But, just in case, in preparation I spent the last several weeks doing all the research I possibly could. So as much fun as it was, I am looking forward to watching/reading/listening to literally anything but Tolkien stuff for a while.

Re: THE LORD OF THE RINGS

I was worried about this. I'm worried about everything DIF-related, but this one seemed particularly daunting, even a year after doing a live concert at a popular venue in Hollywood. 13 hours, a dozen commentators, rented equipment... just a lot to go wrong, not to mention we still wanted to do good commentary.

And I think it totally worked. A thousand shouts out to the forum members, all 50-60 that came and went through the chat room on Saturday - and for those of the "Fellowship" who were in the chat with us all day, your usernames now have a subtle little ring next to them. Thanks to you guys especially, folks who are willing to help us with enthusiasm are the most important bit of all of this.

The next most important bits are the folks who were on mic all day, Mike especially, and Trey, and Brian and everyone else who came out (including Holden, who flew out) to be there and get us through this. Paulou and Jeffery Harrell made their on-air debuts on these episodes, and they killed it. Amazing.

And last but, uh, most? Eddie Doty. We were literally catered to, and not only was his food delicious, but it was hearty and kept us going, and his on-air hours were among the best.

Thanks everyone. We picked a stupid thing to do, and we did it.

Someone should post a news-story on THE ONE RING.NET with a link to the mp3s. Let all fans of the LOTR movies experience this amazing achievement.

Re: THE LORD OF THE RINGS

Thanks not only for the ridiculously entertaining day but also for a bit of inspiration. This commentary of biblical proportions gave me the motivation to accomplish anything in the confines of a chair, including the 10 page research paper I wrote about the Electoral College over the course of Sunday. Down in Front: Making lengthy daunting shit seem possible since 2009.

Also, I have two burning questions about the LOTR saga.

1. Why doesn't the ring turn Sauron invisible like it does with everyone else who wears it?

2. Are the big badass creatures like the Watcher In The Water, the Balrog and Shelob one of a kind monsters or are they part of a larger species? If they are part of larger species, where the fuck are the rest of them during this story?

I'm guessing Sauron knows how to wield it. He has full admin privilege rights to the Ring and can customize its settings.

Those non-aligned creatures - perhaps they're really old and are the last of their species. And Gandalf had to go and kill the last surviving Balrog in the wild before it could be placed on the Endangered Species Act. And Sam almost did the same to Shelob.
