Re: THE LORD OF THE RINGS

There's a discussion during ROTK about its epic battle to end all movie epic battles.
Kingdom of Heaven's Battle for Jerusalem, with its siege towers was similar in style.
The other one around the same time was Troy - with its harder 'R' violence in the extended cut.
Avatar's aerial finale was okay.
Phantom Menace's Naboo land battle needed the Yakety Sax cue

But for sheer awesome spectacle, LOTR kicks ass. The second half of ROTK is full of 'money shots' that most epic movies of the 1970s-90s were struggling just to include one of.

Re: THE LORD OF THE RINGS

Just wanted to throw in and give Jeffery some props. He was fantastic. He is an added dimension that you guys have not had before: a very strait commentary without trying to be funny or a story teller, a true critic. I would love to hear him on a panel. Love all you guys also, just really liked his takes. It was refreshing and he has a great voice for the show.

Once upon a time, someone offered to do a commentary with him over Skype. He declined. And now, Dick Cheney has a new heart. Coincidence...?

Re: THE LORD OF THE RINGS

The burning Ent in the Two Towers has always been called "Jacko" among my friends.

Personally I liked the Treebeard in the movies. It may be a nostalgia as he was pretty much as I had imagined him when I read the books when I was young.

But to me the best part of John Rhys-Davies Treebeard is his rendition of the burárum speech. Whenever my son is sick or is fighting the brave fight against going to sleep. I take the little guy on my shoulder and do my Treebeard impression. It usually does the trick in less than five minutes. I guess it’s the rhythm and the rumbling of the voice that puts the boy under.

Re: THE LORD OF THE RINGS

My story of the One Ring

Years ago I was working in East Greenland as a guide.

I was walking home after I had unloaded my group for the day at the airport and sent them flying to Iceland. Instead of taking the usual route home I took a path which we almost never took tourists through. I came to a stream and on the other side lying on the moss next to the water was a silver ring. I jumped over to the other side and holy shit. It was a replica of the One Ring. It was a small ring, probably in a woman's size. I could not put it on at any cost. It was a high end replica, complete with inscription on both outside and inside. It was silver, not gold one but I got to say it was beautiful.

It probably was from a German kayak group who had camped close by few days earlier and had flown home maybe a day or two before.

I took the ring home and got a leather string and had it around my neck for a while.

I later gave the ring to a girl I was dating and she wore it around her neck. Then one day it was gone. She had given the ring to somebody else. And all summer I was seeing this ring around town on different girls. When I was going home at the end of the summer I tried to find the ring as I wanted to take it home with me (It wants to go home). I could not find it no matter how hard I looked and eventually I heard it was in a another town.

I find the whole thing funny and sometimes I wonder where this ring is now. Is somebody still carrying it around or is it in somebody’s jewelry box never to be seen again? I like to think it might not be in Greenland any more as many greenlandic girls move to Denmark to study and some settle down there. And you know, Denmark borders to Germany.

It want’s to go home!

Re: THE LORD OF THE RINGS

Awesome story. Was the ring always worn as a necklace?

Re: THE LORD OF THE RINGS

Aw, thank you. I was reminded of it listening to the LOTR commentaries smile

No, just the first few times it changed hands. After that it was on the hand.

I like John Rhys-Davies as Treebeard too. I recall on one of the behind the scenes things that Treebeard was inspired by CS Lewis deep rumbling lecturing style at Cambridge. I always thought it was funny that Tolkien was inspired by his friend in that way.

Also, interesting note, Tolkien said in one of his letters that the Two Towers also could refer to the White Tower in Minias Tirith were Denethor had a palantir and had a battle of wills against Sauron. That was part of the reason for his despair and depression.

Still working through Return of the King commentary but so far, but it is so far my favorite. The whole scene at Orthanc of Wormtongue and that discussion by the panelists was hilarious.

Good grief, is National Treasure the only movie he actually survived?

Who is his agent and what kind of negotiations does the guy do for Bean? I mean, I have heard of having tough roles, but this guy gets some tough death scenes.

Re: THE LORD OF THE RINGS

Watch Sharpe.
I bought the DVD set for my father (read: me) when he had a knee surgery and had to stay of the leg for a month.
15 disc box set with 14 TV movies. You might have to have at least a passing interest in the Napoleonic Wars though.

Re: THE LORD OF THE RINGS

Sharpe was a fantastic series and that's the role I most associate with Sean Bean - which makes his line of dialogue in FOTR when he cuts himself on a shard of Narsil amusing. Whilst I agree having an interest in the period helps, I'd say it's that good that it could even make one interested in the history.

Re: THE LORD OF THE RINGS

I was up until midnight watching Return of the King.

God I hate Frodo, that snivelling little bitch..

Re: THE LORD OF THE RINGS

Took me a while, but i just got finished with the podcasts.  bravo.  you guys covered a ton of ground, with limited retelling of stories...not an easy feat.

i'm sort of exhausted after listening...i can't imagine how beat you must have been after (or how good those post cast beers were).

also, my wife and i went to see Fellowship in san diego.  it was opening week, so the place was packed and mostly silent.  about 20 minutes in, a cell phone went off.  the guy next to me picks up his phone and starts talking.

without any hesitation, my wife and i both turn and say "are you fucking kidding me?" at the same time... he sized me up, then sheepishly put away his phone.

the movie (and marriage) continued without any more interruptions.
