Re: Random Movie Talk That Probably Doesn't Deserve Its Own Thread

So I was wandering the wonderful random paths of ImDB today, when I found what looked to be a pretty cool newish TV series. Falling Skies. So I decided, what the hell.

I just finished the premiere,

AND IT IS AWESOME.

Basically, take The Walking Dead, replace Zombies with invading aliens, add an actual sense of humor, replace the dipshit kid with one whos pretty kinda good, and then just make the whole thing actually good.

Oh and add Noah Wyle as History professor turned apocalyptic soldier and Colin Cunningham being rockstar apocalyptic gang leader.

And yes, it's just as awesome as it sounds.

Only down side is the effects suffer from being a lowish budget TV show, but they did a cool thing with some puppetry so I gotta give em that.

EDIT:

V.

Finally got around to starting this one. It's been sitting on my list for a while now. The first time I tried watching it, for reason I just got horribly disgusted with it within 5 minutes and just turned it off. I honestly have no idea what I was on at the time cause it's actually pretty awesome.

Though it does suffer from one of the things I hate about studios/networks, and thats the whole thing of having to explain your entire show in one episode so that they can decide whether they want to buy it or not. Because when I was hearing about V from other people I was expecting (Or maybe hoping) that it would be the sort of thing where it's a slow gradual reveal and it spans a season or 2, and it's really gradual and subversive. But nope, it's just BAM, suck my giant truth of the V cock. So that was dissappointing.

What is never disappointing though is Morena Baccarin in short hair. Oh yes indeed.

Oh yeah, and I guess Alan Tudyk and bunch of other people are in there too, but my gods Morena.

Re: Random Movie Talk That Probably Doesn't Deserve Its Own Thread

Just watched "The Thing"(2011). It was all in all pretty decent. And it really saved itself completely in the last two minutes. Having watched the original is an absolute must.

And, a little fun fact; all Norwegians in the film are profiled Norwegian actors. Good to see that, for once, instead of just trying to learn Americans some Norwegian and get away with it.

EDIT: Except from Sander. He's Danish, but it fit nicely anyway.

Hmmm, I watched the premiere for Falling Skies a while back and didn't think much of it. I remember it being implausible (as opposed to unbelieveable) with a very poorly established world (herds of survivors walking along roads in broad daylight?) which made it hard to really take it seriously. Maybe it improves as the series goes on as I felt like it was more of an execution problem.

"Hah! That's turned you white, hasn't it? That's frightened you, you lily-livered, caramel-kidneyed, custard-coloured cad? Not so brilliant now, are you, eh? eh?"

Time Crimes is great. Someone on NP2k recommended it and I borrowed it from my old boss. One of the cleverest uses of time travel I've seen in a movie in rather a long time.

Re: Random Movie Talk That Probably Doesn't Deserve Its Own Thread

Just finished season 1 of Falling Skies; and aside from one really weird slip up in episode 4 where everything went all "God is great, and if we love god, he will save us" for a bit, and then that never came back up, it's really frickin awesome.

They do some really nice stuff with full scale puppets for the aliens, and by the end of the season the effects were actual pretty nicely well done. Noah Wyle is just purely awesome throughout and Colin Cunningham is completely badass. And aside from a couple of the younger characters and a few dayplayers the rest of the acting is pretty solid too (Although the level of acting in major kid characters is really astonishing, makes a nice change from...some...of the kids we've been getting lately cough*walkingdead*cough)

Definitely recommended. Can't wait for season 2 this year!

I liked Timecrimes a lot. I loved that the director's name is "Nacho". His newest movie looks cool as well. He was previously attached to some bigger project, but I don't see it on his IMDB page. His name popped up in some article about some US produced flick that I can't remember. The only reason I remember that it was him was cause his name is Nacho.

"Hello. My name is Nacho. How are you, today?"

Re: Random Movie Talk That Probably Doesn't Deserve Its Own Thread

Going through my cabinet that is filled with DVDs, I came across Pet Sematary Two, which Trey had worked on.

Haven't seen it in a long time. Watched it again and, umm... it was amusing.

Re: Random Movie Talk That Probably Doesn't Deserve Its Own Thread

Much like 2010: Moby Dick, Pet Sematary 2 was more fun to make than to watch.

Not movie talk but Game of Thrones talk. Well, George RR Martin talk. He is doing a live chat on the Empire Magazine website on Monday 23rd at 1PM (BST). Sorry for all the non-UK folk who may be interested. I know the time difference is a bugger.

I get nothing from this 'plug', just thought people may be interested-http://www.empireonline.com/chat/

Hmmmmm....yes, that may be a fucker. He's in the writer's room of the show, so I doubt he'd spoil anything but some dickhead asking questions may spoil something.

I gave up trying to research or involve myself with anything online until I catch up with the books - even the full names and titles of characters given in their wikipedia pages are huge spoilers.

A science fiction movie with giant robots and no sound in space?

I love this movie.

Re: Random Movie Talk That Probably Doesn't Deserve Its Own Thread

Go see The Raid: Redemption right now!

One of the best fight/action movies I've seen in a long time. My screening had only a half dozen other people or so, but we were all saying "OH SHIT" and "OOOOOOH FUCK that had to hurt!" and laughing our asses off at how ridiculously awesome and brutal it is. Most fun I've had at a theater so far this year.

yikes
Wow...an action movie were the cops are the good guys and have to fight their way through?
It looks absolutely brutal, I agree, but it looks like a fun flick.

I never understood why anyone liked Twister.

Opie and Anthony did good work with Back to the Future. I'd like to hear a commentary from them on Twister.

Re: Random Movie Talk That Probably Doesn't Deserve Its Own Thread

I finally watched it a month or so back. And the best I can say is that I really have no strong feelings towards it.

It wasn't unenjoyable, but I have no idea why it ever became a thing out the 50 million other movies around that time that also hit every beat it does.

Re: Random Movie Talk That Probably Doesn't Deserve Its Own Thread

The trailers helped to sell that movie a lot. At the time, the effects were insanely amazing. That was the first time you'd ever seen that sort of effect happening at that scale, and it looked really convincing in the trailers. Actually, some of the shots still look pretty good.

But the initial teaser was what made people want to see that movie. It's basically just the opening sequence of the film with sequences where you just hear the sound while the title cards tell you how awesome the people who made the movie are. Then it ends on a pretty bad-ass shot of a tractor smashing into the ground and flying at the camera... which I don't think was actually in the movie...

But the opening sequence is shot like a fucking horror movie where if you open the door, the bad guy will kill you all. The killer just happens to be a tornado.

Personally I was underwhelmed by the movie in the theater, tho it was fun to watch and there are some pretty funny / intense moments. The intense moments are entirely unrealistic and goofy, really, but they're intense and fun when you're 15. Unfortunately, they sold that movie to me as though it was going to be about the science of tornadoes and people tracking them and trying to save people during a bad outbreak or something. It is about that, but in a really unrealistic way where the tornado is like a sentient villain almost and it almost turns into some kind of revenge picture at the end.

"This storm killed my ex-colleague and destroyed my friend's house! I have to go after it!"

"What are you going to do?"

"I'm gonna study it. I'm gonna study the fuck out of it!"

And then it dies at the end after they've studied it to death and seen it's soul or whatever they were doing in the cone there. But yeah, it was the combination of the effects plus the way the initial teaser sold it like some kind of weather-related horror / thriller / drama and not like the semi-cheesy action comedy it turned out to be.
