Topic: Just Saw The Avengers In Australia! Spoiler Free Zone So Don't Stress!

Hey to all my Down In Front International Friends!

Just thought I'd let you know that I just got home from seeing the Avengers at my local cinema as it opened today in Australia.

You all have some awesome stuff to look forward to. I saw it in 3D (I am not normally much of a 3D fan) but there were some 3D shots in the movie that were simply outstanding.

The movie is great to look at and a whole heap of fun!

Story wise it is quite good as well.

One final thing... just wait until you see Mark Ruffallo as Bruce Banner and then the way they did the Hulk. By far, far, far the best version of the Hulk in the Bana/Norton/Ruffallo Hulk saga.

Hawkeye is spectacular as well.

Anyone else out there seen it yet? What did you think?

Greg.

Seeing it tomorrow as well smile Really excited about this one. The early word is really amping up my expectations, which isn't necessarily a good thing. Cautious optimism, remember, cautious optimism.

"Hah! That's turned you white, hasn't it? That's frightened you, you lily-livered, caramel-kidneyed, custard-coloured cad? Not so brilliant now, are you, eh? eh?"

Are you seeing it in 3 or 2D, Red? I'm seeing it in 2D at 11.30am, if I wanted to see it in 3D (which I don't), I'd have to go an hour earlier. smile

Seeing it in the evening in 3D. It seems remarkably hard to find cinemas in London showing it in regular 2d.

It is apparently really hard to find it in 2D, which is odd. My local in Hamilton (a 50 minute bus ride) is showing it all day, so I'm lucky/glad big_smile

Re: Just Saw The Avengers In Australia! Spoiler Free Zone So Don't Stress!

If I were even slightly interested, I'd go see it in 2D. I've seen 3 films in 3D, namely Pirates 4, HP7 part 2 and Tintin. Neither were impressive, and although Tintin was the better one, as far as 3D goes, I'm still not exactly sold on the idea.

Now, as for the Avengers, I'm really not invested in the film at all. I'm sure it might turn out good, but the films leading up to it just didn't get my interest.
Iron Man: Great film, didn't feel clustered.
Iron Man 2: Fucked up film, too much avengers shit I didn't care about in there.
Thor: I don't even care about that crap. Horrific film with some cool performances.
Incredible Hulk: Only slightly remember it, so I don't care.
Captain America: Wasn't that bad. Had some cool bits, but completely dragged me out of it by the end. I don't want to go see the Avengers just because CA told me to. Also REALLY not a fan of the Red Skull character. I'm sure if I knew even the slightest about the CA universe, I'd see him coming, but I didn't, and he looked pathetic, and his intentions were... lame, at best.

I'll check it out on Blu-Ray somewhere down the line.

I saw it today and I loved it. It was action packed and really funny. The Hulk is a comic genius big_smile

Managed to get some free tickets to it today. I've not been a fan of most of the Marvel films leading up to The Avengers, but I thought this one was real fun. Have to agree with the Hulk being a comic genius too!

I just listened to the Joss podcast, so it was interesting to hear Trey's view, which I think echo your own.

I agree with the ending of CA being a bit of a stretch to get him back in the "real world" but the Avengers was a bit heavy handed. However, I would disagree with the point that the Red Skull being pathetic, but this is personal preference. I thought Hugo Weaving did a great job, especially after they had to reveal the skull underneath. While I was only passingly familiar with CA because of the Spiderman cartoon, I found the movie to just be plan fun, reminiscent of what I would expect the comic was designed to emulate-WW2 fears and patriotism. Kind of campy but still fun. Plus, Stanley Tucci

Thor was just kind of epic for me. While the plot was kind of jumbled in points, the overall tone of the film was a very large world, bigger than what is seen on the screen. Chris Hemworth also rocked as Thor, and set up a fun dynamic of Loki. Again, I am not familiar with the Thor universe of the comics, but my knowledge of Norse mythos lent to the fun.

The only reason I am seeing the Avengers fro Thor, CA and Tony Stark. Anything else is just bonus

You mean Norse mythos as in Loke was never the brother of Thor, nor was Odin their father. If I recall correctly(and don't quote me on this), Odin was father of Thor, Balder, Fjordheksa, Hod, Hermod, Våle and Vidar. Loke is not related to either. He's in there, as this traitorous character, but he's not the brother.

I probably should never mess with a Norwegian in that regard lol wink

I didn't say that it was accurate to the original mythology, but that my (basic) knowledge of it lent to my experience of the movie.

But, as little of Norse mythos I know, I have a even less knowledge of Thor from the comics. Honestly, I thought the whole Loke being related thing was kind of forced. But, that was just mean.

Re: Just Saw The Avengers In Australia! Spoiler Free Zone So Don't Stress!

I always gave Thor it's detours from the "real-world" norse mythology, because it's pretty clear that what we know as norse mythology is actually based on 2nd or 3rd hand information passed down, from people who knew the gods when they walked the earth or even from the gods themselves, and some of that might be overblown, or just plain not even true (egos of the gods and all), and then you also add in a few centuries of human fuckery to turn it into a proper religion, and you get a version of Asgard thats...kinda there but actually not really.

I also rather enjoyed Thor btw. Although it definitly could have used another couple drafts to smooth out the whole "And now I'm in love with you, so now I have have to save the entire planet"...thing. There was a definite imbalance in the level of earth to Asgard stuff. But aside from that it was fun.

Re: Just Saw The Avengers In Australia! Spoiler Free Zone So Don't Stress!

You just described, um, every religion.

Re: Just Saw The Avengers In Australia! Spoiler Free Zone So Don't Stress!

Well yeah, except in this case we actually get to see and hang out with the REAL gods that the religion is based on. So we can make a one to one comparison.

EDIT: Did you just imply that every religion is actually based on a warping of real, existing gods? Cause I'm pretty sure you did.

Claims followed by fuckery, in particular.

Preemptive reminder: In comics, "in-universe" is called canon, but in religions, it's called dogma.

Alright. I was talking from a third party perspective, but from an internal perspective, yeah, true enough.

Re: Just Saw The Avengers In Australia! Spoiler Free Zone So Don't Stress!

An elliptical way to my point, but an "objective" version of largely invented, embellished, and retold stories lost to time is impossible. I mean, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are all descended from the same original source material. And heavily edited due to historical circumstance. Ancient Judaism was polytheistic, for example. So what any people, ever, "really believed" is moot.

And if I remember correctly, norse mythology and religion was less intertwined than something like religions of Ancient Greece. More, uh, messy?

Re: Just Saw The Avengers In Australia! Spoiler Free Zone So Don't Stress!

True, in the real world. But as far as Thor goes, I'm fairly certain they actually make a joke or at least hang a lantern on the fact that they actual kinda fucked with the humans religion to make themselves look better...or something along those lines. It's been a while since I saw it.

And I believe so, I'm definitely not a historian or even play one on tv, but from what I do know, that would sound about right. Most of it just stems from how isolated the Norse religions were compared to Greek/Roman/Egyptian. I mean those three pretty much swapped ideas every day.

I would like to point out that in Christianity, you also have canon, so its not all dogma.

Also, I hate derailing threads, but having studied ancient Judaism, not sure were the polytheistic aspect come from, at least not in the sense that Greek/Roman or Egyptian systems were polytheistic. In Jewish history, the Jews would occasionally follow Canaanite gods who were technically not part of their overall belief system. They just borrowed it for a while before returning to their monotheism. Even archeological evidence supports Jewish traditions being quite old and being quite different from their Canaanite neighbors.
