Topic: Hello there, Higgs boson.

Still preliminary, but it looks like they've got at least two separate observations of the new particle.

I'm not fat, I'm just too attractive to Higgs boson.
When the COBE satellite first mapped the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation around 1990, some scientist said 'it's like looking into the face of God'... and the media ran with it, and then Stephen Hawking ended his Brief History of Time with 'and then we'll know the mind of God'.
And now this frigg'n 'God Particle' meme...
And all the Christian nutjobs then take it literally and think scientists are literally searching for God when over 90% of them are hardcore atheists.
I prefer to think that they're looking for Odin.
I heard some scientist say the name was short for "Goddamned Particle", because they couldn't find the son of a bitch.
(I kind of hope, as does the co-host of This Week in Science, that they don't find the sucker. Having the theory fall apart makes life much more interesting)

After spending 7.5 billion euros on the LHC they better find something.
Yes, finding nothing can also be an interesting answer.
Like the Michelson-Morley search for the ether.
Anyway, it looks like the results are more than just tentative, and not a repeat of the 'neutrinos travel faster than light' fiasco.
To be fair, the neutrino story was the one lab going, "OK, either we fucked up horribly or all of science is wrong. Please, for the love of God, find our mistake!" It was science working as it should (as compared to Cold Fusion)
Good on them over at CERN. 50 years later we finally have an answer.
The science story I'm really salivating about is the landing of Curiosity next month. That BMF better not stack.
Count the number of things that can go wrong...

A few videos I've come across that I thought were interesting.
A fantastic introduction to the Higgs particle.
Johnathan Amos, the science correspondence for the BBC, uses basic props to explain the Higgs boson particle.
Brian Cox's reaction on BBC.
I think the main problem isn't "God", but calling something "Higgs Boson" doesn't help either.
This is kinda cool.

No one seems to have a problem with "Lou Gerig's Desease" or "Keplerian orbit".
