Re: Cool Trailers

Moderate spoilers I guess:

  Show
At one point the kid watches a hyena shred a live zebra and slowly consume him over a series of days and watches as he the same hyena kills an orangutan. And the kid forces himself to cut open a turtle to not starve to death (Like a huge fucking deal in the book). I mean the entire thing is basically a lesson in "Mother nature will cut a bitch and is just generally a fucking bastard, and you do what you have to in order to survive. So snap out of your affluent little little rich kid life and grow the fuck up."

Also....entire island of seaweed that will LITERALLY eat you.

And then there's a whole element of him trying to balance three religions in his life (Hinduism, Christianity and Islam) and coming to terms with that. And just generally coming to terms with the universe and his place inside throughout the journey. The book is very focused on the spiritual aspect of the journey as well as the "Oh fuck don't eat me aspect."

So...yeah...BDA isn't happy.

Re: Cool Trailers

Wait, how is it like Tintin? Sure the tiger is CG, but were you expecting a real one? Or are you implying that Suraj Sharma is a live human being in the uncanny valley?

Re: Cool Trailers

It looks like someone went over everything with the MAAAAAGIC brush. So now everything is MAAAAAGIC! Everything so clean, so perfect, so fucking magical. It's like the movie is trying to cram itself down my throat going "I"M FUCKING MAGIC RIGHT?! EVERYTHING ABOUT ME IS SO MAGICAL!! AREN'T I SO PRETTY?!?!? WHY DON"T YOU LOVE ME ALREADY!!?!"

If it were a fantasy movie, sure great, sweeping vistas and characters just verging on the precipice of too unrealistic. But this is Life of Pi... and while there are moments of that, sure, most of the story isn't that. It misses the point.

It just feels so completely wrong.

And Tintin just seemed the best one to use, I originally had Avatar, but any overly CG'd, and pointlessly over-pretty movie these days would work.

EDIT: Thinking about it... it feels like every single frame in that trailer is trying to be The Fountain, but just for the sake of being pretty not for any real story reason.

Re: Cool Trailers

Speaking of trying to be The Fountain: http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/wb/cloudatlas/

This could either be the awesomeness of The Matrix, or it could be the pretentious boredom of Matrix Reloaded.
Only time will tell.

Re: Cool Trailers

I- wow...if they can pull that off (Speaking truthfully, it's unlikely, but if they can...) damn. That'll be something.

Re: Cool Trailers

Wow. That looks like something I want to see. The trailer is 5 minutes long and I still have no clue what to expect from this. This is a good thing. I hope it's good.

As for Life Of Pi, the way they cut trailers now, it's hard to tell what a movie is actually about. Sometimes a movie can look really great and it turns out to be one of the dumbest things ever, and sometimes you see a trailer that looks like shallow pointless crap only to find out that the movie's actually really good.

Given that Ang Lee is a pretty good director and the source material is so highly regarded, I'm gonna bet that this is just a really poor trailer.

Re: Cool Trailers

It's not the trailer I have an issue with. Unless every shot was taken from a dream sequence, it won't solve the main issue I have with it. And if these shots do work in the movie he's making, then he will have changed so much about the actual meaning and point of the story that it becomes pointless to even call it Life of Pi anymore.

Re: Cool Trailers

They're not going to market it as an oppressively dark and depressing film because money.

Re: Cool Trailers

I never said I wanted oppressively dark and depressing. But disposing of any sort of realism altogether?! When that's entirely what the story is about?!

No fucking thank you.

Re: Cool Trailers

It's been a few years since I read the book, but it struck me as rather allegorical.

At the end... Show
At the end it's not even clear that the tiger ever literally existed and is implied that the tiger was an aspect of himself. A manifestation of his will to live or something.
Honestly I didn't think it held together as an allegory as much as I wanted, but I'm sure English teachers have great fun analyzing it to pieces to their students' horror.

Anyway, the trailer wasn't what I was expecting either, but it's pretty. Apparently M. Night was attached to direct at some point, and I'll take Ang Lee over him any day.

Well, one might consider the Olympic opening ceremony to be a TV spot for Bond.

And, of course Jimmy will know this, but we're not going to get any other Olympic TV spots in the UK, due to the Olympics only being shown on a couple of dozen BBC channels.

(Not joking about the "couple of dozen", by the way.)

Re: Cool Trailers

I don't have Sky, so I haven't seen them but I heard there are a lot. You can watch everything online anyway or via the red button on Freeview...... And I'm doing neither.

And yeah, I never thought of the opening ceremony being an ad for Bond, good one big_smile

Re: Cool Trailers

The BBC have popped up 24 extra TV channels for the duration of the Olympics, so they are literally showing *all* the Olympics live, simultaneously.  If I were into sport, I'd probably find it amazing, although I would despair at all the extra PVRs I'd have to get to record everything. The production galleries must be pretty fearsome.

However, they're not all on Freeview (there isn't enough over-the-air bandwidth for 24 extra TV channels, so Freeview is only a couple of extra red button channels in the 30x range), but they are all on satellite, Freesat, cable and online.

I'm impressed with how many options the BBC have made available: I think everything is live in HD, much of it is in 3D, and some of it is in Super Hi-Vision (7,680 x 4,320 picture, 22.2 sound). It makes NBC's delayed, edited version look utterly pathetic by comparison.

Yeah, that is true. I didn't mean you could see everything on Freeview, hence the 'or' rather than an 'and'.  Nah, I just worded it wrong, thanks for the lesson, though. big_smile wink

The BBC has done good with their coverage, I have watched some online and it was pretty good.

Ever since I heard him first on This American Life I've allways had a soft spot for Mike Birbiglia.

We've had "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" and "Abraham Lincoln vs Zombies".

Spielberg's film obviously should have been about Lincoln killing Werewolves!

Re: Cool Trailers

I just saw that trailer and...  wow...

That movie doesn't look good at all. It looks like someone spent too much money for a made-for-TV movie. I do not like the aesthetic he's used for his last several movies. They all feel cold and staged all the way through.
