Re: #36 - Musicals

Because that's how you now think the role should be. It's like the old saying that the Doctor you first see as a kid becomes the benchmark all other Doctor Who's are judged against. I have nothing against Idina Mensel, having seen her in Wicked and in concert in Buffalo last year, but just think she was miscast in Chess. The character should be... a bit more world weary. I view the way the Concept Album and Broadway actresses played it as the right way smile

(I will say I'm not a fan of Mensel. At the concert with the Buffalo Philharmonic, she demanded all the programs have pages ripped out of them before she would perform. You know, so we would be "surprised". Oh, the cursing from the 60 year old ushers...)

Well I saw the Concert first (so there might be a first doctor thing going on here)

Thank you for that. I had no idea. tongue

And please for the love of the gods, it's Menzel, not Mensel.

As for the rest of the it, meh, I like her. Doesn't really make a difference. Although it's a little pretentious to call any way the "right way". Jus saying.

Re: #36 - Musicals

Do you think the nature of theatrical casting—not only the fact that several actors will perform a role, but the fact that you often grow attached to one performer's take than another's—affects theater to film adaptations at all? Personally, I think it makes it easier to see other people in the role, but there's also fans of Wicked clamoring for Menzel and Chenoweth to reprise their roles in a film adaptation.

No, I mean that's just human nature, they get attached to one actors performance, and shun or critisize the rest. The only reason it doesn't happen more in film, is because very rarely does more than one actor play the same character... but when it does, holy shit they'll rip it to pieces.

I mean have you ever gotten in an argument with a die hard fan about who is the better Wonka. Both sides will rip the other to shreds. When personally I think they're both pretty cool interpretations of the character, and enjoy both of them for it.

EDIt: TO actually answer your question. It does affect it, but it's not an issue limited to theater to movie transitions. It's an issue any time they recast a new version of something.
