This movie is a fucking blast. Very de Palma/Hitchcock. The premise is relatively simple, but the filmmaking is out of control. This is the kind of movie where a person's throat is about to be slit with a glass shard, and then it smash cuts to a cellist pulling their bow across the strings. I think folks on this forum might really get a kick out of it.

Re: Last movie you watched

GRAND PIANO is pretty cool. Scott Weinberg called it "PHONE BOOTH in a concert hall--except it's quite a bit better than that." If I heard the elevator speech for this film, I'd say "Not gonna work." But they made it work.

There's a lot you can pick on here, but overall it worked for me despite the clunkiness. I wasn't sure whether the VFX were good or a little off, which leads me to suspect that maybe there was something a little off (?). I enjoyed this. I have a blast with most Paul W.S. Anderson films.

More like Winter's Stale! This godawful film was written and directed by the guy who wrote A BEAUTIFUL MIND, BATMAN & ROBIN, and THE DA VINCI CODE. It's the first film I've seen in a while that's so aggressively bad that I actually sat there in a state of disbelief. Apparently it's based on a book. I haven't read the book, but somehow I'm able to tell you with absolute certainty that the book is better. If you explained magical realism to someone on peyote, then told him to remember that "love conquers all," then asked him to tell you a story--he would tell this movie's story, except he'd do a better job telling it and wouldn't force Russell Crowe on you.

Damn, what a mess... Open Season 2 has very little story, it relies almost exclusively on old-style animated slapstick comedy. The thin plot would be barely enough to fill a 20-minute cartoon.

The Polish dub made the first Open Season movie fairly watchable. It didn't help this time around.

I enjoyed Jack the Giant Slayer with kids. It was a bit by-the-numbers and full of anachronisms, but it had some good humor and characters (not Jack, unfortunately) and kept up a good pace.

Warning: I'm probably rewriting this post as you read it.

An ironic look at the American society through the eyes of a con man. Once again Leo DiCaprio doesn't disappoint; his charisma can really make you root for a scam artist. Overall, an enjoyable period piece.

Co-starring Amy Adams in one of her earliest movie roles (now she's in... well, basically everything).

Akiva Goldsman. Yeah, I was hoping he was losing traction in Hollywood as he's not been nearly as active in films since 2009 and been doing only a little TV stuff.

And what is odd is, he actually contributed to some good Fringe episodes. He should stick to TV, frankly.

Holy shit, this is good. Really good. A crime thriller that delivers drama, tension and excitement. The Departed reminds me a lot of Chris Nolan films. The romantic subplot wasn't absolutely necessary, but it's a minor quibble.

That said, the "Best Picture" Oscar for that year should've probably gone to Children Of Men.

I'm going to be that film snob and say that the original "Infernal Affairs" is better smile

Edit: Saw After Earth - it's ok, I love the design work on the ships and Nova Prime, main flaw is that it hasn't really thought through the concept of how humans would handle the Ursa monster, and seems to insist on giving the human rangers only bladed weapons, which is utterly retarded. We don't try to fight lions and tigers with swords, we use these things called guns.

There's a lot to unpack in The Departed.  It's possibly my favorite Scorcese, and damn, my girl Thelma is on fucking POINT in this one.  Tons of metaphor and every visual plays to theme about self deception and the poison of ambition.  Rewatch the movie, but with this thought:  Matt Damon's character is closeted.   They don't come out and say it, but it's heavily hinted at through the story.  It adds an extra layer of depth behind his choices.

Rewatched The Insider again, as I try to do every year.

Still a fucking masterpiece and possibly the crowning achievement of the 90s as far as I'm concerned. This time in particular I noticed how amazing the cinematography is, the way Mann uses his edits and frame compositions. Stylistically, it really is one of the most powerful examples of filmmaking talent I've ever seen, taking a totally un-cinematic story and making it extremely tense and compelling.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/bf/Transformers_dark_of_the_moon_ver5.jpg

Having nothing better to do, I rewatched Transformers: Dark Of The Moon yesterday.

First of all, as we've come to expect of this franchise, the VFX porn is impressive (although the lengthy action scenes get a bit tedious). The story... not so much. It manages to be simplistic and messy at the same time.

This installment, just like the previous two, has some wacky character stuff (fortunately without the blatant racism of Revenge Of The Fallen, although some overly sensitive people may object to Deep Wang and the "assholes" with British accents wink ). For some reason, this time it felt like an attempt at emulating the Coen brothers' movies (maybe it's because of Frances McDormand and John Turturro). A not very successful attempt.

While it was nice to see him, the cameo by Buzz Aldrin felt a little forced. Seems like he was there only to give some dignity to the silly concept of space robots that turn into cars. A good story would've served that purpose better. Leonard Nimoy's appearance could also be considered an attempt to please the geeks, but it still makes much more sense (he has some history with Transformers and his character is crucial to the plot).

Just like Megan Fox, Sam's new girlfriend serves mostly as eye candy. I imagine Michael Bay is not very popular with the feminist crowd.

So basically, to sum it up, it's not a good movie. An improvement over Revenge Of The Fallen, but still not good. It failed where The Avengers succeeded.

All Is Lost - Frustrating.  I don't know what I was expecting with a title like that, but there was really little to like about this movie.

Drinking Buddies - Enjoyable, great performances, mostly.  Zero plot.  Olivia Wilde made a believer out of me.

All Is Lost seems to be the most binary Love it/Hate It movie of 2013. *

I loved it, but I absolutely understand why someone would hate it.

* Except maybe Upstream Color, which I haven't seen yet.

I think Upstream Color is probably more divisive because its style is so esoteric. All Is Lost may be hard to sit through, but at least there's nothing weird or incomprehensible happening.

Re: Last movie you watched

That's how it works, I think. Movies that are perplexing seem to get people's hate juices flowing more than movies that (they find) merely boring. The beef people seem to have with UPSTREAM boils down to "I don't know WTF is happening" whereas with ALL IS LOST people could follow the action easily (it's as simple as a story gets) but were bored by it. Being told a story that makes you feel bored versus being told a story that makes you feel stupid, I guess.

I suppose I should clarify.  I don't hate All is Lost.  I actually think it's a good movie.  It's just frustrating and impossible to like.

Because that makes sense.

Lol, you're actually not the first person I've seen say this. I really liked it!

And yeah, PorridgeGun, you gotta start explaining these ratings. Hunger Games is an 8 and There Will Be Blood is a 6.5? At least give us a sentence.
