Topic: Sam Duckworth's Art and 3D Models!

Hey everyone, I thought I'd post some of the stuff I've been doing! One of my goals is to break into the games industry, preferably as a character modeler. Maybe one day to start up my own company!

I thought I'd post some stuff I'm working on at the moment, feel free to critique me, give me feedback and such.

At the moment, I'm currently approaching my end at a games design course in university and our final year project is to make a little game! the lecturers select the best 6 projects and enter them into a games showcase where we compete against other universities and are judged and awarded prizes by companies from the industry (Last year, Rockstar and Sumo Digital appeared!)

The game itself is a 4 player sci fi arena shooter where the players guns are non-lethal. They blast air (think like those guns in Minority Report) The environment itself is full of death traps!

I was put in charge of making one of two player characters along with helmets so here is what I made:

The game also has a degree of customisation, for example you can change your team colour and the model will reflect that with the colour of the clothes and lights. You can also swap out different helmets!

Here's another project that I'm working on! A space lizard creature:

And this is where I am currently at in the modelling stage, this is roughly... 7 hours in:

Now that I've got a little bit of free time, I've been drawing character designs a bit more! I thought I'd share with you all some of the better drawings that I had done smilehttp://24.media.tumblr.com/7668bb034ea91330dcc8f793af1ce4bd/tumblr_n5hkccSxnA1qg40uso4_1280.png

Those are awesome.

So cool. Thanks for sharing.

Curious as to how you color those? I recently bought a Wacom Intuos, and I'm picking up drawing again. Currently doing a tracing draw, but I'm not... good at coloring.

Ooo, Intuos tablets are lovely things! I'm saving up for one to eventually replace my Wacom Bamboo Fun/ Its pretty old but its done me well! I'm not the best at cleaning up my lineart and my pen doesn't help in regards to that so I've developed quite a quick but sketchy art style that I'm happy with.

As for colouring them, I use the art program GIMP. One layer for the initial sketch (occasionally scanned in, mostly drawn from scratch using the paintbrush tool), one for the cleaned up line art (I use the paintbrush tool with a custom setting, it's sorta triangular and mimics pen strokes quite well), one layer for the shading (pure black paintbrush tool with the layer set to about 30/40% opacity) then another layer for flat colours using the standard paintbrush tool again. When it comes to colour schemes, I just tend to go by eye with what seems to fit.

Depending on how complicated the drawing, I make a layer for each colour that I use or each character, etc. Alongside other effects depending if the picture demands it such as gradients, drop shadows and what not. Hope that helps!

Re: Sam Duckworth's Art and 3D Models!

Yes basic stuff I know. This is where I'm currently at, albeit very WIP.

I'm looking into how to make a realistic-based painting, but not completely photoreal. Trying get those shades correct.

Ultimately, I'd love to just turn off the ink layer and have it look perfect, but I wager that'll take a good couple of years worth of practicing.

That's basically what it boils down to, lots of practice.

As for your picture, it's looking good!As for the colouring, I'd suggest blending your colours together more as right now, they are more like quick blotches. This is more noticeable with the hair. Blend those colours more and try to follow the flow of the hair with your colours. You've got the right places for your shadows, you just need to push them further.

I did a paint over on your picture to show what I mean:

http://i58.tinypic.com/dnbwnp.png

Maybe something like that? I  tweaked your line art a little by reducing the amount of hair and the position of the ear.  I also thickened some lines to indicate weight and depth as well.  Hope I've helped! smile

Re: Sam Duckworth's Art and 3D Models!

Yes! That's nice!
I'd like to get to something like that level. It should also be noted that when I said tracing, I'm tracing over this image:
http://img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130529101039/glee/images/a/a0/Jared-leto-jared-leto-34348209-1280-878.jpg
And trying to match it as best I can. The colors used are sampled from averages at those points in his face, hence the blotches.

So while your rendition isn't what I'm going for, you didn't exactly have the image to take anything from, and that's a great job you did!

Ah I see! And that's fine, with your reference picture I can see that I'm definitely wrong about the amount of hair and the placement of the ear. His ears are higher up on his head than the average person which threw me off a little, haha.

I suppose you can still take potential techniques and what not. I've found for myself that drawing boils down to practice and borrowing techniques (to which tracing can certainly be counted, at least in the beginning) to eventually make your own style smile

Blotting down colours is a good way of getting started, its just refining it afterwards. It's looking good! smile

This one calls to mind League of Legends for me and I could absolutely see this as an in-game character tongue Love it!

Re: Sam Duckworth's Art and 3D Models!

Been feeling a bit under the weather recently and felt like I was gonna get rusty with my 3D work and drawings!

So I began work on modelling this bust, making it up as I went along. My plan is to get this guy looking like he belongs in a tell tale game ala The Walking Dead or The Wolf Among Us. Eventually I'm gonna rig and skin him too so I can practice facial animation. Could be good for my portfolio!

The video is a timelapse of approximately 3-4 hours. Need to add in teeth and a tongue still. Any critique would be welcome! smile

Re: Sam Duckworth's Art and 3D Models!

(Fixed your video link. The YouTube embed code on the forum wants two things: 1. "http" instead of "https," and 2. the most-basic version of the link possible, with no modifiers after the jibberish-URL. Links exactly like the following will end up workin' with the code: "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QhpR-UP8qg")

Fucking awesome, Sam. The smooth animation on the timelapse is killing me, that's so cool.

My only critique, and I'm not a soft-body guy, would be that it seems you've got your Big Contours down, and your Small Contours down, but the sort-of Medium Contours aren't strongly represented. In other words, you've got good bone shape goin,' and you're painting in good surface-wrinkles... but stuff like big skin folds and droopiness aren't coming across.

Sorry Dick, I need your face! (I like to think Dick would get a kick out of being used as an example in a 3D modelling conversation; he's an old Lightwave guy, from even back in the Video Toaster days. He is our people.)

In your model, I see big stuff (sunken cheeks) and small stuff (crows feet, laughlines) but not the medium stuff; general blobbiness of the subcutaneous layer, a second fold behind the dimple, skin bunching up over the top of the nose, etc.. My only critique would be spend some time futzing with that medium-sized sculpt zone.

(Note: I don't actually know what I'm talking about.)

Re: Sam Duckworth's Art and 3D Models!

Oh cool! Thanks for the advice, both on the youtube links and for working in the medium contours!

I definitely see what you mean though, it did look like it was missing detail but I wasn't sure as to what it was.

Re: Sam Duckworth's Art and 3D Models!

So things have been rather positive for me lately. I haven't worked on the old man model again just yet because I was given an art test for a games company!

This is the first time a company has gotten back to me on my job search, and they like me enough to give me an art test so things are promising! The test was to model this character's head and shoulders in a hi-res sculpt, retopologize it, UV map it and apply textures on it:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/58466837/TestCharacter.jpg

And spend no more than 8 hours on it. This was what I managed to come up with! There's a few graphical errors that I didn't have time to fix but I think I did a decent job with the time-frame. What does everyone think?

Re: Sam Duckworth's Art and 3D Models!

Thanks everyone for the kind words! I have some good news, the company got back to me after I submitted the art test!

They liked what they saw and said that I did very well compared to some applicants who had more experience than me. Whilst the job position they advertised will more likely go to one of the applicants with more experience (Any experience is better than me, in this case, haha) they want me to go in for an interview on friday to explore possibilities for me as they see potential! They mentioned potentially making a junior position for me! big_smile

Re: Sam Duckworth's Art and 3D Models!

It's been a little bit since I posted some artwork so... Here we go!

And yesterday, I took part in a 6 hour games jam! They said it was less about making a game and more coming up with a concept for one. The theme selected was "Bees"so I came up with... This thing! I was rather tired and wanted to try and replicate that bad VCR feel.

Cool Fox by Sam Duckworth on Sketchfab

Here's the current state of the model! If you click on the title, you'll get to see it in an interactable turntable. The skinning and rigging was a very quick job as I wanted to get a dynamic pose rather than a T-pose.

I'm looking into making the textures pop a bit more with some detail rather than being mostly flat colours.
