Re: Zarban's lightsaber battle project

I'll be swinging through in a few hours (or maybe tomorrow; just got back to LA and still haven't even posted a FIYH episode yet, much less this-stuff) to lay out the official VFX tasks and all that, as well as editing and whatnots. Dibs will be considered final after that.

Re: Zarban's lightsaber battle project

Ha. Had everyone goin' with my mod-voice, huh? But seriously, if we need roto, everyone's rotoin.' Everyone but me.

Anyway.

Do me a favor and add your info to the "Artist" sheet. (If for some reason you don't want people to know your email, just shoot an email to friendsinyourhead@gmail.com sayin' so.) Once we get started on everything, I'll get in touch with everyone and we'll talk about shots. I'm pretty sure that everyone can have at least one or two shots, but that nobody is gonna have more than three or four. It's a small show.

Re: Zarban's lightsaber battle project

Alrighty, what's the plan for editors at this point? I know Owen is cutting, is Dave also cutting? What's the division of labor there?

In any case, here's all the footage wrapped up in one 3.5 gig ZIP. Do our server a favor and only download the raw footage if you're gonna be editing it.

Owen, if you wanna do a long rough-cut first, so we can see what we have and Zarban can plan reshoots and inserts we might need, that'd be great. Then you can go all edit-wizard on it and tighten things up as you see fit. Once we have a relatively locked cut, we can start doling out VFX tasks.

Re: Zarban's lightsaber battle project

The next couple of days are pretty empty for me, so I should hopefully be able to get the rough cut sorted out pretty quickly.

As for dividing it up, I guess that depends on what Dave wants to do. Maybe we switch back and forth after each set of notes?

Re: Zarban's lightsaber battle project

Here is the rough shot list in order.... I can update the storyboards if that would help.

01.    Opening crawl.
02.    Tilt down to planet Dantah.
03.    Straya sneaks along stone wall from left to right
04.    Straya calls master at stone wall ("It looks abandoned"). Tilt up to base.
05.    Probe droid flies in sky.
06.    Straya hides from probe droid at wall, slinks away. Droid reenters frame.
07.    Niken’s ship flies in space.
08.    Niken is awakened from meditation, activates wrist comm.
09.    Probe droid delivers message (OS of Niken).
10.    Niken dismisses droid message, reports to Darth Voyne.
11.    Voyne answers (OS of Niken).
12.    Niken reports. (“...probes have succeeded.).
13.    Voyne orders destruction of Straya  (OS of Niken).
14.    Niken confirms. (“She will not escape this time.).
15.    Straya creeps thru forest from left to right.
16.    Niken’s ship comes in to land in clearing.
17.    Straya stops to report to master. (“Too late! Engaging!”).
18.    Straya stands in woods (OS of Straya, “May the Force be with You.”).
19.    Niken’s ship lands. Niken exits, removes robes.
20.    Straya confronts Niken (“Your mission is foolish!”).
21.    Niken activates lightsaber.
22.    Straya removes robes, activates lightsaber.
23.    Niken attacks (quick exchange OS of Niken).
24.    Straya counters (quick exchange of OS of Straya).
25.    Niken presses but they break off (OS of Niken at first).
26.    Niken uses Force lightning (“...the power of the dark side!”).
27.    Straya resists Force lightning.
28.    Niken presses Force lightning. (whip pan in there somewhere).
29.    Straya fights off Force lightning (“...taught me to counter it!”).
30.    Straya Force-pushes Niken and stabs him.
31.    Straya starts to call master, hears Niken’s comm.
32.    Straya answers Niken’s comm.
33.    Voyne starts to speak (OS of Straya, “I am impatient...”).
34.    Straya replies (“Niken has failed.”).
35.    Voyne makes her an offer while Stray starts the tracking (“Join me.”).
36.    Straya refuses, trace is complete (“I will never join you.”)
37.    Voyne reacts angrily and ends comm (OS of Straya).
38.    Straya looks away. Tilt up to sky.
39.    Credits.

Sorry we didn't slate each take, but they are more or less in order. There are a couple of shots involving a gazebo thing that we abandoned, BTW.

Re: Zarban's lightsaber battle project

Thanks, that'll be a massive help when it comes to logging. I think the shot list on it's own should be sufficient, but it wouldn't hurt to update the storyboards, I suppose.

EDIT: Just as I posted this, the footage had finished downloading. Hurrah!

EDIT 2: Any chance of a quick and dirty render of the ship flyby? As far as I can tell, they're the only all CG shots in the thing. If not, I'll just whack a placeholder in for now.

Re: Zarban's lightsaber battle project

Happy to take a pass at the edit if you want another set of eyes, but I'm equally ok to leave it if everyone's liking the way it's coming together. As the saying goes, too many cooks spoil the broth. As long as we get a good result for the kids, I don't mind being the roto monkey, or whatever.

I actually don't care whatsoever, I'm good with whatever needs to be done. I could just use the practice.

Re: Zarban's lightsaber battle project

Here's a VEEEEEERRY rough assembly, but hopefully it should be enough to show what we're all in for. Youtube uploads don't seem to be working right now, so I'm afraid there's no fancy embedding.

Showdown on Dantah - Rough Assembly

I usually hate logging clips, but I had a blast with this. Pretty much every shot had me giggling and saying 'This is so cool!'.

EDIT: I've uploaded to Vimeo instead.

Re: Zarban's lightsaber battle project

Terrific! It would be great to have more of the trading of blows shots, and we'll need to cut back to Voyne for his reaction at the end before she drops Niken's arm.

As I feared, it could use more of a button at the end. Maybe she needs to call her master again to report her success and get his reaction. (He: "Good work! I'm on my way!" She: "May the Force be with you!")

Re: Zarban's lightsaber battle project

I think the ending will work quite well once you have the score behind it. It's a strong last line and with music to match it'd be pretty kickass.

EDIT: Yeah, I'm planning on putting more of the saber action in there - I've just kept it simple for this assembly.

Okay, so I went and added some more saber action. Here's just that little chunk...

SABERS!!!

EDIT: I got a bit carried away and ended up putting in a temp score and other little placeholders.

So what's gonna happen in terms of notes and such? Do you want me to go and start refining it before we do any of that or is it notes first?

Re: Zarban's lightsaber battle project

I'll look at the raw footage. The only things that come to mind are:

1) More lightsabers is better. Hooray! If you can manufacture another clash-and-lock moment, that would be great.
2) In the scene where Straya slips away from the probe, I was hoping to create a gag where she sneaks away, but then when she's gone, the probe slyly slides back into the frame and we know it spotted her. So, if there's a take where that gag works better, let's try to use it.

EDIT: wait, there's got to be a better take of Niken taking off his robes. And one where Straya delivers her first line more smoothly

Re: Zarban's lightsaber battle project

I've got next week to shoot my stuff. I did some internal test shots, and by the looks of it, I won't need a green screen for the shots. The cloak is super simple to roto even with the roto brush(I'll even provide the mattes, if need be), and the lighting just compliments it, and I won't have to try and set up the screen and lighting. It makes it all easier.

Zarbs: Do you want me to try and match the timing in the already cut thing, or just do my own, natural thing?
