Re: What Are You Watching - TV Edition

I love Justified, probably one of my favourites. I often recommend it to people, but nobody ever listens! I was a big fan of Deadwood too, so it's a little bit like watching Seth Bulloch's descendants continuing the trade. Personally, I enjoy the experience of watching it much more than I do something like Breaking Bad (which for all its technical achievements is a pretty downer story).

Never got into Justified but I have watched the episode involving Hitler's paintings a number of times because I find the ending (and the journey to it) just so darn satisfying. smile

Sold! I'm going to check out season 1 of Justified.

I agree on Breaking Bad, also. I keep wanting to see it, but I am rarely in the mood for the subject matter (I usually catch up on classics like The French Connection, instead).

I post because I care.

A Touch of Cloth. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Touch_of_Cloth

Series 3, episode 2 blew me away. I am used to 1 in 3 jokes making me laugh (or less). Usually, I mostly enjoy the background posters and signs and touches like the back of heads on the back of the work board. But, this episode hit me again and again. It was as though someone said there won't be another series and the writes said 'F*ck it! Let's do all the jokes." And when I thought it was over, they ran a 'next time on...'. And that was all funny, too.

The Smoking Room. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Smoking_Room

I think Robert Webb is funny. He is central to the show but it is still an ensemble piece. I don't laugh out loud often. But, there is a lot of familiar workplace material. I also like seeing how characters change as episodes reveal more about them. For example, in the pilot, Barry is nervous about a promotion interview. I felt for him. By episode 4, I've learned he is an incredible screw-up and, by the Christmas episode, he's completed an entire crossword without having a single correct answer. I can't think of many shows that so effortlessly establish and then change characters with a single conversation.

After this episode I kind of think that Korrasami will actually happen. How awesome would that be? All the way back to the beginning of ATLA, these two series has given us positive messages about gender roles. What about a positive message about sexuality too?

And "Korra Alone" was probably the best episode of the series to date. Emotionally mature and complex in a way so many adult shows can't handle.

Over the past season, having to regularly explain why I keep watching a show that I have lots of legitimate complaints about, I've rationalized Sons of Anarchy many, many times. Currently where I stand with it is:

Sons of Anarchy is like a restaurant where the food is surprisingly good considering how cheap it is, but the wait-staff have a tendency to spill loads of it on the floor before it even reaches your table.

I actually liked the episode despite it being a clip show. The last segment in particular was really fun to listen to. Varrick makes me smile in nearly every scene.

I really hope we get to see Toph wreck Kuvira's stormtrooper army soon. (Maybe mother daughter reunion? Maaaybe)

  • Hummingbird mech suits for next week!

  • Did someone just die at the end there? 0_0

Re: What Are You Watching - TV Edition

Anyone else been watching Kingdom? New series on DirecTV has just finished its first season (10 episodes). Already been picked up for 2 more, it's set in Venice CA and centres around MMA fighters. Not the usual thing I would watch but the casting piqued my interest so I watched the pilot, and quickly became absolutely addicted. Best thing I've seen all year and just got better and better every week. Some of the best writing I've seen in years. Highly recommend.

Re: What Are You Watching - TV Edition

I'm out of shows to watch these days. Honestly. I watch Doctor Who, and Game Of Thrones, and that's just about it.
I've tried watching Grimm, didn't like it. I've got Gotham on my list, and had Constantine, but after the reviews, I decided not to.
Once Upon A Time had a cool premise, but I tend to grow tired quickly from 20+ episodes a season series.
I've yet to complete Breaking Bad, I'm gonna watch House Of Cards and True Detective, but I feel like time is what I'm missing.

I'd love to watch Avatar and Korra, I just can't stand anime, no matter where it's made sad

Not even Miyazaki's work? :(

To be honest, I didn't really like anime before Avatar. It was always the weird stuff that would interrupt the shows I liked on Cartoon Network when I was up late (long live Toonami!).

Avatar showed me that, despite the goofy artstyle, there's really amazing storytelling in anime*. Studio Ghibli has made some of the most creative stuff I've seen. I love Spirited Away despite not being able to explain exactly why.

*and honestly, I haven't seen anything as good as it since then.

Avatar and Korra aren't anime in the terms you're thinking of. They're Western cartoons, and the storytelling is very Western. The art style takes cues from anime, but that's about it. I agree, I really can't do traditional anime either.

They're also two of the best shows in recent memory, so. There's that.

Re: What Are You Watching - TV Edition

The Colbert Report and The Legend of Korra ending a day after each other is kind of rough on me right now. I'm so happy that they both ended well tho :)

KORRA FINALE SPOILERS Show
NOTE: not distant enough away to be able to think critically of it yet. So fanwank incoming

Kuvira was an amazing villain this season. I could see where she was coming from and WHY she would think that her plan would be the correct one. I dont agree, but I understand how she would come to that conclusion. (alright maybe she did get a little Nazi-ish and make a giant killing machine but whateves:P)

Speaking of killing machines, the mech's laser was awesome. That shot of the laser horizontally missing korra and causing the explosions behind her was amazing! The huge mech in the city had a lot of shots reminding me of Attack on Titan, just with less disturbing imagery. Very pretty.

Giant battle and only Asami's dad died!  So happy there wasn't a super sad death for the end of Avatar:)

Great end to my favorite season of Korra. Amazing show and universe!:D

Re: What Are You Watching - TV Edition

Don't get me wrong, I've seen plenty of anime films that I enjoyed, but then, I guess, there's the nature of the films being 100% serious, and none of that deforming shit, and/or slapstick.

Akira, Ghost in The Shell, Mononoke, Nausicaä, and even a verison of Arietty, which, incidentally, is also "adapted" by British TV, (Borrowers), featuring Stephen Fry and Christopher Eccleston.

I guess they left it ambiguous *enough* for you to decide if they're into each other if you aren't really into that relationship. That, and I assume that's the most they could get away with while Nickelodeon was over their shoulders.

I could write a full-length essay on the clear implications of that scene but some people would still INSIST that it was merely platonic. So in that sense, I guess it was ambiguous? But everything about the staging, cinematography, structure, and score of that scene indicates otherwise.

I like to think the visual parallel with shots of previous relationships in the show make it pretty clear. That and this and this, but whateves.

Well, no need apparently. Both creators have officially confirmed their intentions and stated that the ending was unambiguous.
