Re: The Shining

Is it okay to bump a thread this old? I can't find mention of it in your rules anywhere...

I finally listened to this episode today. I'd been looking forward to it since it was released, but some movies I just want to sync up to the commentaries, and this was one of them. So I was waiting until I had The Shining on blu-ray. Anyhow, great episode you guys. Easily in my top ten.

I have my own little story about my first time seeing The Shining; When I was about five, my dad was watching in on VHS in the living room, and I wandered in, just in time to see the naked old hag sinking back down into the tub. I was absolutely horrified, and ran out of the house, and wouldn't go back inside for hours. It was an image that would pop back into my mind on occasion, and I had no idea what it was. My dad was always watching Columbo, so my child logic told me that must've been an episode of Columbo. Anyway, years later, when I was a teenager, I was watching The Shining for the first time, very late at night, and when the bathroom scene started I began feeling this really strong sense of dread, it was almost like a physical sensation in my chest. It wasn't until the nasty old bitch showed up that I realized what was going on. And that's my Shining story. Not as good as Trey's, but then I'm not as good as Trey.

The main reason I felt compelled to bump, though, is my one major disappointment with the episode. I got excited when you started mocking crazy Kubrick conspiracy theories, but then I was sad that you didn't touch on my favorite...

This guy is either legitimately insane or he's brilliantly taking the piss. Based on the rest of his website, I'd say the former, but I dunno. Maybe he's doing a Stephen Colbert.

Re: The Shining

Danny is literally carrying a symbolic Apollo 11, on his body, via the sweater, to the Moon as he walks over to room 237.

Why do I think this? Because the average distance from the Earth to the Moon is 237,000 miles.

The real truth is that this movie is really about the deal that Stanley Kubrick made with the Manager of the Overlook Hotel (America). This deal was to get Kubrick to re-create, in other words, to fake, the Apollo 11 Moon landing.

NOPE. I'M DONE HERE.

That website is fascinating. I've often thought about make a website that would read way too far into movies like this, but this guy's definitely better at it than I'd ever be. You just know all of this was due to the sweater. Some dude saw the sweater and was all "OMG! He's trying to tell us something!" and just reverse engineered the rest from there.

I'll have to look through the rest of that site. I love that there are people out there who are so dedicated to this sort of crazy shit.

Jan Harlan, brother in law of Kubrick, confirms what this man said about the layout of the overlook not making sense.

"The set was very deliberately built to be offbeat and off the track, so that the huge ballroom would never actually fit inside. The audience is deliberately made to not know where they're going. People say The Shining doesn't make sense. Well spotted! It's a ghost movie. It's not supposed to make sense."

Continuity wasn't that huge a deal. Are the actors doing about the same thing and wearing the same clothes? OK, cut that shit together and move on. Wrong shirt in this next scene because we had to cut out that other scene? Well, fuck it. Let's hope no one notices that.

Original Trek was famous for that. They'd cut in reaction shots from other episodes if they needed one, the wrong colored shirt be damned. Often the people at the helm would change between wide shot and closeup, especially in season two when they used season one footage without Chekov.

Re: The Shining

A little late, but great episode!!
I am on the same boat with you guys about this really not
making the grade to be on my personal top 10 or even top
50 best horror movies.
Kubrick is an auteur, he is/was brilliant, but IMHO he isn't the
best director ever, or maybe not even in the top 5.
Hitchcock, to me, is the best horror director.
OK, you can say that some of these other guys(not Hitchcock, of course)
are good because of Kubrick, and they emulate his style,
But whose to say that if Kubrick was never around that these guys
would have not figured out there own style....

I never did think that this was a very scary movie, IMO, maybe
the couple of "jump scares" when the kid sees the twins,
but the "here's johnny" stuff was more like a slasher, and I was taken
to see stuff like House by the Cemetery when it was at the
drive-in in 81', I was 6, lol, so good Ol Dad started me young
with the genre goodness. I here people say how they saw this
or that on TV by accident and they ran away terrified, that never
happened to me. I was reading those UFO abduction books in 1st
A little late, but great episode!!

P.S.: This site has some fantastic photos and notes from the movie, I
put a couple pics up, the overview of the set, which as you can see,
is broken up into pieces, so it would be disorienting, but It was done
for space reasons, I'm sure. The second pic is a frame of the German
typewriter scene: “Was du heute kannst besorgen, das verschiebe nicht
auf morgen,” which translates to “Never put off till tomorrow what may
be done today.”

You are correct, I meant to say better genre director, or just a better director in general, IMO.
To Me Hitchcock is pretty much to King. I am actually surprised that they haven't
done one of his movies, or maybe they have and I just didn't see it.

Re: The Shining

Kubrick did dabble in a bunch of genres, so that's probably more accurate, yeah.

Speaking of, you guys have covered almost all of his most popular films. Only big one left is A Clockwork Orange. And maybe Spartacus, but there's not a whole lot of Kubrick in that film.

Re: The Shining

Fascinating/maddening analysis of the ways in which none of the home media releases of The Shining have managed to get the bloody aspect ratio right. (I'm still reasonably happy with the Blu-Ray, whose transfer is magnificent in terms of picture quality.)

This problem is magnified a hundredfold now that streaming sites like Netflix and Amazon are doing stuff like cropping anamorphic films to fill 16:9 television screens. Few weeks ago was watching a movie on Prime that was clearly shot in 2:35:1 and had been cropped to the point that one scene, a conversation between two actors at extreme ends of a restaurant table, could basically only fit their noses in the frame. And here I was thinking pan-and-scan had died with the demise of 4:3.

Doesn't that happen on American TV?

Polish TV stations do that regularly and sometimes inconsistently (Parts 1 and 2 of The Hobbit were aired in 16:9 and Part 3 in 2.35:1; Star Wars Episode IV was in 16:9, the rest in 2.35:1). Fortunately, it's very rare on home video (the Polish DVD of The Mothman Prophecies is an example).

Re: The Shining

I'm sure it does—I don't ever watch movies on TV so I hadn't personally come across it. It feels worse when it happens with streaming services because they're how so many people watch movies now. With a television broadcast it will at least usually have that notice that the film has been modified to fit this screen, etc., but someone who's watching a movie on Netflix is gonna be operating under the assumption that it's the proper film.

Clearly physical media isn't a perfect solution to the problem—the whole reason I posted that Shining example is because the DVD and Blu-Ray releases are all inconsistent—but still, this is one of many reasons I buy my movies on disc.

Re: The Shining

I'm given to understand that at one point David Fincher saw someone watching Fight Club on a plane (an edited-for-the-plane version, on a seat screen), and saw that the aspect ratio had been opened back up from 2.35 (or whatever) to fit the 4:3 monitors on the plane, and dolly tracks and other crew material were repeatedly visible.

...something-something 'aspect ratios really shouldn't be a variable after filmout.'

Re: The Shining

In a separate but related issue, it drives me up the fucking wall that theaters don't matte for different aspect ratios anymore and just project movies on screens without caring about the negative space bracketing the frame. It's not so bad when you have a 2:35:1 movie like The Last Jedi projected on a 1:85:1 screen and the grayish bars are on the top and bottom of the frame, but more and more I'm seeing my local theatres do the opposite and project full-frame movies on wide screens. Like, here's a frame from Phantom Thread, an utterly gorgeous movie:

https://villagevoice.freetls.fastly.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/18-MKTING-0121_Phantom_Threads_Live_Orchestra_1200.jpg

Three of the four times I saw this in a theatre, the screen was the correct size, and shots like that were just breathtaking—they filled the entire frame and made you feel like you were living in them (the ballroom shots like the above are just *chef's kiss*). Unfortunately, the other time I saw it, the theatre showed it on a 2:35:1 screen without matting and this was the result:

https://i.imgur.com/lSqimZE.png

I obviously grayed up the brackets a little so they're visible against the black forum background, but it was almost that bad. Because in addition to matting movies improperly, theatres these days also have problems making blacks look black and not washed-out gray.

It's infuriating. If you're not gonna project the movie on the proper screen and you're not gonna get the blacks deep enough that the brackets aren't noticeable, just shuffle some damn curtains around.
