Re: Great Fucking Movie Posters

No claims of it being particularly 'great,' but the destination was either gonna be this thread or the chatroom, so.

I was snooping through a digital archive of the New York Times from 1981, and was surprised to stumble upon:

EDIT 1: Incidentally, I don't recall having ever seen this poster before.

EDIT 2: Ope, here it is. Theatrical re-release.

Re: Great Fucking Movie Posters

The concept of a re-release is so foreign to me and it's so fucking neat. I mean, I know they still happen, but they're like one-week Fathom Events things and make $100 bucks apiece for the most part. The idea of the whole country just communally deciding to go rewatch Star Wars every couple of years is just . . . there's something warm about it, y'know?

Re: Great Fucking Movie Posters

I have loved this The Thing poster for ages. Just discovered that prints are available and was financially irresponsible.

(Yes I know it misspells Campbell's name but everything else is too fucking cool.)

Re: Great Fucking Movie Posters

Teague; thank you!
I now need that poster!
I've been looking into getting all 6(although 9+ now) theatrical posters for the Star Wars saga to put up on my walls, and the more authentic the better. I've never even seen that poster before, and it's great!

Re: Great Fucking Movie Posters

We need to return to the days when posters had not one, not two, but three awesome cornball taglines.

Re: Great Fucking Movie Posters

well, to be fair, that's also way, way before the internet was even a conceivable idea, and where you could even change the spoken language at the touch of a button. Back then, the odds of a movie trailer hitting you, was as big as the odds of you visiting your local theatre, and that they would have that specific trailer film.

I mean, that's a great poster and all, but I get why it's not standard anymore.

More awesome Trylon posters from some of their recent series:

Re: Great Fucking Movie Posters

Just hung this one at home. The light and shadow, the cigarette, the color palette . . . baby

(Also I never talked about it in the Last movie you watched thread, but Out of the Past is one of the best movies I've seen so far this year, and Robert Mitchum is just the coolest in it.)

Re: Great Fucking Movie Posters

Yeah, we used to have a very strong movie poster tradition (a custom film poster was an opportunity to make a covert political statement during the communist era). It died out in the 1990s when theaters started using generic posters (I guess they were supplied alongside film prints). Nowadays only a few arthouse theaters  bother paying local artists.

So honor the valiant who die 'neath your sword
But pity the warrior who slays all his foes...
