Woah, woah. Stop the bike. You've only seen 3 of the 5? If so, that's a big part of problem right there.

Are these shorts great? No. I think some of the parts are a little dull and long, and can also understand how they may be difficult to consume and process since they can be frustatingly elusive. That's ultimately the journey, however, like it is with many films. You can opt to go on this journey and explore what's going on and to see the interaction between two species develop over the millenia, or you can choose to distract yourself with impatience. But I don't think it's fair to refuse to engage and then claim they're just thought experiments.

And really, 'getting it' has very little to do with how smart you are. It's simply observation and paying attention to what you're seeing each time a human falls into the water, even the costumes tell a story. It was far from random things happening. It's comments like this that hint that you didn't really try with it as you claim. Same goes for the "I spent half the time wondering what the fuck was going on" vs. "there was never any big mystery".

At this point, I'm curious what you thought of Trey's Ark miniseries.

Sure, but its hardly his best work. You're handing him an award in 2014 for career work he did over the last 20 years rather than this one movie of 2013. That's the downside of these 'consolation' or 'bout time he got one gongs'. It's happened heaps of times... someone is neglected for years, and then gets one for a less-than-emblematic performance.  Anyway, we've all agreed these awards blow, and there's plenty of award ceremonies, so I'm sure there's enough to go round for everyone, several times over.

Agree, Deakins should have had numerous Oscar wins to date, but he hasn't and I don't think a 'woops Oscar' now is the way to go, especially given the competition he's up against this year.

Well that's great, and I'm sure whoever wrote the world building bible for this project had a hell of a lot of fun. But like I said before, I got exactly 0% of that from actually sitting down and watching the shorts. And trust me it's not like I wasn't trying, I spent the entirety of my time watching going w.t.f. is happening and trying to at least parse some logic from it. but in the end I spent half of it wondering how they shot it, and the other half in a confused state of wtfuckery. They weren't films, they were thought experiments on trying to understand the mind of the filmmaker.

To clarify, my funding their kickstarter had little to do with my understanding of the story being told (I was mainly interested in the lighting techniques they were talking about and got the lighting tutorial and plans as rewards). The interpretation I outlined previously was born out of watching all of the shorts and looking at the overall picture and themes. It seems like you were intent on trying to comprehend each short as an isolated story rather than a collection and that's maybe where you went wrong? Indeed, if you watch all the parts in order, things become clearer as you travel back in time.

Which I guess is a politer way of saying 'try harder'.  wink

I saw Kickass 2 at last. Wild tonal shifts (deadly dark to cartoon) made for a weird viewing experience, but it was fun.

Yeah, I knew we had forgotten something important. We could have done a top 3 and worst 3 at the end too, but oh well. In our defence, there are an awful lot of SW games.

I was a kickstarter on these actually and I have to disagree that they lack substance. You'll notice that the further back in time we go, the more human and civilised the underwater people were. The repetition of the ritual that transforms the human that falls into the water is a demonstration of the decline of their power, their civilisation and the widening of the chasm between the races, primarily in terms of technology. As we go through the ages even greater parts of the ritual are lost, to the extent that in the 'end', in our modern day, the underwater people are just scary and savage animals dressed in rags.

I want Gravity to win [Gary Oldman]every one![/Gary Oldman], but would retain my faith in humanity if it won cinematography, effects and directing.

I kinda wish more behind the scenes stuff had real exchanges like this and not the sanitized BS where everyone gets along and talks about how brilliant the other people involved are. It's a job, and sometimes you're gonna have those days when you don't agree about shit.

I totally agree, films are collaborative projects and you're always going to have conflict whether it be in the writing room, on the set, or in the editing room. And that's no bad thing.

Rinzler's recent book on Return of the Jedi hints at a lot of disagreements during the making of that film, sometimes blowing up and sometimes being directed into good energy. And ESB had a similar background. I find it fascinating that so many great films go through difficult births.

Quick edit: I looked up the books on Amazon and did the whole "Look inside" bit. One piece of concept art is of a Y Wing pilot thinking, "Die, you gravy sucking kong." Man, why were lines like that cut?

It's a concept picture showing a pilot playing a handheld game (Donkey Kong)  big_smile

Started on Rinzler's Making of Return of the Jedi. Wow, this is an amazing work (just like that done for the other two films) with some absolutely fascinating insights into the behind the scenes.

There are some excerpts from the transcripts of meetings with Lucas, Kasdan, Marquand and Kazanjian, where they're all just going back and forth with ideas. Seeing who comes up with what is itself interesting, but reading Lucas' thoughts especially are eye-opening - stuff like how Yoda can't fight and that anyone can use the Force. Positions he would completely do a 180 over years later.

Highly recommend!

To my recollection, no such meetings were held during the PT.

If one does something charitable, you might be complimented by someone else saying "that was very christian of you", such is the success of the PR.

Regarding the earlier chart, I believe it's exaggerating for comic effect, but there is an element of truth to it in that there was a period of stagnation in the West and it did occur in tandem with a period of Christian dominance. But that doesn't imply causation and there were numerous other reasons at play. I think you could possibly make a case that fear of persecution restricted early scientific endeavours or made some reluctant to release their findings (even Darwin proved reluctant centuries later), but that's true for any society in which the status quo is threatened, not just a Christian one.

It would be fascinating though if some monk wrote down similar thoughts on evolution 500 years before Darwin.

Really? I thought the score by Vangelis is one of the best things about it! 'Drums of Guagamela' is a great track, as is the 'Titans' theme.

Alexander is one of those films I cannot really be objective about; I've simply given it a pass for being a long film about Alexander the Great. I'm not sure it's better than Richard Burton's 1956 version but visually it's a gorgeous film. The multiple cuts serve as a fascinating case study of editing as well.

I think it's let down by bad casting more than any other aspect. It's difficult to be persuaded by Colin Farrell's performance, and Angelina Jolie takes her character a bit too far at times. Admittedly, both of these are arguably director choices.

I agree though, a story of this magnitude really needs more time to breathe - either as a film trilogy (possibly based on Manfredi's book trilogy) or as a miniseries.

Just got back. I enjoyed it but was constantly saying to myself "this isn't needed, I'd cut this whole section out of my hypothetical 1 movie supercut". Specifically, the entire sequence with the dwarves inside Erebor where Smaug uselessly chasing them around. There's a whole damn movie coming, so don't expect us to believe that the dwarves are going to prevail in their plan! Especially when you heavily foreshadowing that Bard's remaining black arrow is going to do the killing... Meanwhile your big bad villain is looking weaker with every minute that goes by without a dead dwarf.

Smaug and Bilbo was utterly brilliant (and Smaug in general, truly amazing work done on him), and is the highlight, much the same as the Gollum scenes in the first.

I was baffled by some decisions though, they add so much junk into the story, including a love triangle that seems almost entirely for the benefit of broadening the film's appeal, but skim over the Beorn scenes in just a few minutes. I guess I was disappointed as I always remember that chapter fondly - and the way that Gandalf introduces the dwarves gradually in groups so as not to overwhelm Beorn. It would have been a really nice call back to their introduction to Bilbo as well.

Finally, my main complaints about the Hobbit continue sadly, way too much going on, way too many cartoon stunts, and absolutely no subtlety. Further, the writers don't trust the audience to get anything without somebody saying it (and Bilbo appears to be the main voice here). But goddamn it, I still like them - they're Tolkien.

True Grit is the only Coen bros' movie I've actually enjoyed watching. Fargo has a great 'oh shit' moment at the end but is otherwise unremarkable. I've not seen Where Art Thou, but from the rest of their work, it seems that our tastes just don't match up.

I liked World's End in spite of its seeming attempts to throw me off, but I wouldn't consider it top 5 material. There was something about Hot Fuzz as well that didn't quite sit with me.
