Introducing the David 8.
Just finished season 1 of Falling Skies; and aside from one really weird slip up in episode 4 where everything went all "God is great, and if we love god, he will save us" for a bit, and then that never came back up, it's really frickin awesome.
They do some really nice stuff with full scale puppets for the aliens, and by the end of the season the effects were actual pretty nicely well done. Noah Wyle is just purely awesome throughout and Colin Cunningham is completely badass. And aside from a couple of the younger characters and a few dayplayers the rest of the acting is pretty solid too (Although the level of acting in major kid characters is really astonishing, makes a nice change from...some...of the kids we've been getting lately cough*walkingdead*cough)
Definitely recommended. Can't wait for season 2 this year!
"Be Bold. Impossible: Redefine It. The most valuable thing that anyone will ever give you is their TIME. Not their money. Remember that. Ask for people's help. Not their permission. The 'squeaky wheel' should be dismantled and replaced. Be careful what you wish for because you will get it. Be even more careful what you work for because you will get it even more quickly. Remember those that help you. Help others when they need it. Don't EVER give up. Making films is hard. Awesome, but hard. You want easy, make a sandwich. Don't lose your focus. That little speck of light way off in the distance, don't stop until you're standing in it. If you have to, take a break, go to your corner, get some sleep but don't ever give up. You will get there."

Proving once and for all, that the space shuttle cockpit, does in fact, exist in 4 dimensional space.
Surround sound also breaks the fourth wall. I wonder if people objected to it when movies started getting mixed and presented in surround. I know my mother-in-law doesn't like movie sounds coming from directions other than the screen, similar to how some people don't like 3D picture stuff coming at them out of the screen. I can't convince myself that 3D picture is an extension of 3D sound, but it could be argued.
Personally I think Teague nailed it on the head in the episode. 3D Visuals at the moment are a trick, they are, at best, a pretty good magic trick that works on your brain most of the time. Whereas all of these other innovations it keeps being compared to are LITERAL translations of that experience, the screen is actually in colour, there is actual sound coming out the speakers, the speaker is actually just behind you.
If you want a better comparison between surround and 3D visuals, it would have to be more along the lines of: All the sound is actually projected from speakers at the front of the theater, but if you wear these speaker ear flaps it'll trick you into thinking there's sound coming from behind you.
Once we have LITERAL 3D images where we don't need glasses or any other tricks, where anyone can just walk in and go yep, that's in 3D, is when we'll have anything even close to comparable to surround sound or colour.
I felt bad for Hook, sitting all the way at the back of the forum.
Here ya go little buddy.
My point being that it MAY be a generational thing, but I think it will be between people like the people in this community, not the general population.
Oh dude, a couple years ago I was over at some youth group thing with the church I was at and they decided they were all going to watch Iron Man, cause they had a blu-ray and HD tv. So I was like cool, I've never actually watched a blu-ray before.
They had the smoothing turned up to max, and I was driven up the fucking walls, but I was the ONLY one who could see it, and I was outnumbered so I couldn't fix it, I couldn't even watch the bloody thing, I just went and like sat in corner by myself or something after about 10 minutes. And for a solid year or so after that, I thought that's what ALL blu-rays looked like, so i was pretty much just like Fuck Blu-ray man. And it wasn't until I I was watching another bluray at some family thing I think, where they didn' t have the smoothing turned on, where I was like...oh shit, bluray is actually kinda awesome.
So yeah, not a fan of the hyper crisp, smoothed out picture. But apparently I'm the only one who notices it.
I'm interested to see what The Hobbit looks like, hopefully it won't be as bad as that.
Ahem.
Yep.
I...uh...indeed.
TOOOO MUUUUCH AWWWWESSSSOOOOOMEEE.
/Brain explodes/
EDIT:
Dying. Can't. Stop. Laughing. Dear. Gods. Someone. Save. Me.
EDIT TO THE EDIT:
Last one I promise.
I've got a small collection of my 35mm photos posted online, just some choice ones, pretty much entirely of classmates from VFS, that I took with a handmedown 35mm camera I got from a friend of mine. And I love the look, and was starting to get pretty good with it before I kinda had to shut down the operation cause I couldn't afford it anymore. Once I start getting some cash flow I'd love to get back into it. Luckily I still have my DSLR (D60) that I got for a birthday/grad present from my folks, so that tides me over.
This is key, games are not a passive form of art. They require a player shaping the experience to appreciate them.
cough*minecraft*cough
I think the main point that we've gotten out of this is that Portal is great.
Truer words have never been spoke.
Daaaaaaaaamn Keanu. Respect.
An example of a game that I would never ever actually play, but I love watching someone else play, just because I love watching him play it.
Very cool. If I have one regret, it's that I came into all this just too late for the real fun fan filmy stuff
Curse you parents for not having me sooner!
Well I'm actually really well versed in at least part of this culture. I watch on a daily basis, and actually create my own let's play...(well I havn't done one in a while, but thats beside the point)... for minecraft and other games.
It's a very interesting thing.
A/B) The thing about video games is that the gameplay can be incredibly diverse (if you know anything about minecraft, you know what i mean) but even portal and other video games. So that the way one person solves a puzzle or a level, is naturally going to be different than the way you do it (or with minecraft, oh gods, endless). So it can be highly entertaining to watch that person's line of thinking, and see how they process the exact same situation.
C) Absolutely, theres an entire subsection of gamers dedicated to creating that very content, and their are hoards of people that love watching it (Myself included)
D) YES. It's actually something that most of the LPer's I watch look for, and most actually won't play a game if there isn't a story to it. Because then it;s just watching someone jump around for half an hour. And so what the fuck is the point?
I would say that the experience of watching an LP and actually playing the game are two very diffrent things. When you are playing the game yourself, you yourelf are becoming invested in it because the choices YOU make directly affect the outcome. Whereas when I'm watching an LP it's much more about enjoying the commentary of who evers playing that game and getting to relive the story without actually having to be the guy playing it.
It's different than watching a film, because when you're watching a movie, it's about directly getting you to interact with the story itself and get invested. When I'm watching someone play a video game it's about partially getting to live/relive the story, but it's also about enjoying the process and commentary of whoever is playing.
For example, one of my favorite LP's is GuudeBoulderFist's playthough of Portal 2. I got to relive the story and his commentary is hilarious, and it brings a whole new level to it which i absolutely love.
As a note, I will not watch an LP if the commentator sucks or there is no commentary, because then i might as well just be playing the game myself.
Teague wrote:I guess what I'm feeling is, sure, you could add enough story to sort of explain the politics of power in Marioland and why Mario gives a shit and how the fireballs work, but... that's not why you play the game. It's just fun to do, like a sport.
My point exactly.
I don't think that a game needs a story in the way that a film does. It's always wonderful when a game does have a story, but it isn't a requirement for me in the same way that it is for a movie.
Well, as Dorkman pointed out, even movies don't need stories the way movies do. That's why we get transformers and it's ilk.
There's a very linear comparison to games in that aspect. If you play a game without a story, all it is is the jump, jump, fall die, restart, jump jump jump fall die. ad inifinitum. And if the gameplay is set up well you can get a momentary release of excitement from that success (Ahem, Angry Birds). However it's just a surface thing, it's directly akin to the chemical release of pretty lights and explosions.
If you add a good story, you have a REASON to finish that level. Because you are emotionally invested in whether or not you succeed. And that's what elevates a game to the next level.
I care about killing Glados, because this shit is messed up, it's sick and twisted and it has to end....even if it is in the name of science. Also, I don't know about you, but I was fucking CRUSHED when I had to kill my companion cube.
I'm curious what the aesthetic Brian is talking about through this entire commentary, (that wouldn't have set up the false expectations about this being pure hard sci-fi) would actually look like. Because I'm very much of the same thought as the rest of the guys that this is just the world that you establish when you want to tell this story, and then you let the magic bean play out inside that.
To put it another way I guess. Do I need to setup an alternate aesthetic to the real world we live in if I want to make cloverfield? The first bit of that movie is setting up that this is going to be a movie about a bunch of people at a party, and we get to chill with them. Nothing about that is telling me there's suddenly going to be this giant monster that suddenly attacks New York. So should I be upset that the movie's aesthetic didn't tell me this was going to introduce the magic bean of the monster?
I haven't even actually legitimately played mario, and I know the storyline of mario.
Bowser steals princess, Mario goes to rescue her. This is the story of Marios journey across the lands to save her. It's simple but it's there, and you still get pissed off when that little fickin toad jerks you around.
When it comes to Portal it's a bit different, Portal is much more about implying a story, then just out and out telling you one. Portal 2 however is much more of a traditional story, where x happens which causes you to do y, and a story unfolds (Unfortunatly Valve seemed to think that meant it also had to ramp up it's "our audience is an idiot" factor for it's gameplay, that so many games today do).
Havn't seen it yet. Most likely gonna try and see it after work tomorrow.
My brain hurts from awesome.
So I was wandering the wonderful random paths of ImDB today, when I found what looked to be a pretty cool newish TV series. Falling Skies. So I decided, what the hell.
I just finished the premiere,
AND IT IS AWESOME.
Basically, take The Walking Dead, replace Zombies with invading aliens, add an actual sense of humor, replace the dipshit kid with one whos pretty kinda good, and then just make the whole thing actually good.
Oh and add Noah Wyle as History professor turned apocalyptic soldier and Colin Cunningham being rockstar apocalyptic gang leader.
And yes, it's just as awesome as it sounds.
Only down side is the effects suffer from being a lowish budget TV show, but they did a cool thing with some puppetry so I gotta give em that.
EDIT:
V.
Finally got around to starting this one. It's been sitting on my list for a while now. The first time I tried watching it, for reason I just got horribly disgusted with it within 5 minutes and just turned it off. I honestly have no idea what I was on at the time cause it's actually pretty awesome.
Though it does suffer from one of the things I hate about studios/networks, and thats the whole thing of having to explain your entire show in one episode so that they can decide whether they want to buy it or not. Because when I was hearing about V from other people I was expecting (Or maybe hoping) that it would be the sort of thing where it's a slow gradual reveal and it spans a season or 2, and it's really gradual and subversive. But nope, it's just BAM, suck my giant truth of the V cock. So that was dissappointing.
What is never disappointing though is Morena Baccarin in short hair. Oh yes indeed.
Oh yeah, and I guess Alan Tudyk and bunch of other people are in there too, but my gods Morena.
How can you not love that face?!
And I'm just gonna leave this here. Ahem. Indeed.
Ooo Burn notice for Con men. That would be awesome.
