An indie dramedy that reminds me a lot of Six Feet Under. It's pretty good, despite some unfortunate implications.

It seems to suggest that what lesbians really want is a big cock. I imagine it stirred some controversy in the lesbian community. The director (who is a lesbian herself) uses the Chasing Amy excuse ("human sexuality is complicated").

It's undeniably a Kubrick film. And a pretty good one, if you don't mind the usual Kubrickian pacing. The story kept me interested despite the considerable length. Classical music is used nicely throughout the movie. But the best thing about Barry Lyndon is the cinematography - it's just as beautiful as we've come to expect from Stanley.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a5/Driving_Miss_Daisy_.jpg

A sweet, heartwarming tale, but I wouldn't call it one of the all-time masterpieces. So why did Driving Miss Daisy win the "Best Picture" Oscar? My guess is that the Academy once again went with the safer choice. Oh well... It's been known to happen (Annie Hall vs. Star Wars for 1977, The Departed vs. Children Of Men for 2006). I'm not trying to say that Annie Hall and The Departed are bad (both movies work very well for me), but Star Wars and Children Of Men have proved more influential (it's a crime that Children Of Men wasn't even nominated).

A competently made, enjoyable story, but did it really deserve a "Best Picture" Oscar? I'm not so sure about that. What's so exceptional about The Artist (except for the "B & W, 4:3 and silent" gimmick)? Seems like Academy members simply adore movies about themselves big_smile

The film is pleasant to watch and I'd recommend checking it out, but that huge hype wasn't deserved.

Even the mainstream Roman Catholic Church seems to take that position, at least in countries where veneration of Mary is particularly strong. Some people obsess over this technicality and trying to tell them that she didn't remain a virgin can be hazardous to your safety (just like trying to explain to them that Mary and Jesus were Jewish). Sad, isn't it?

The Hangover, Part II suffers from the Ghostbusters II syndrome - it's mostly a rehash of Part I. To be fair, that's probably what many fans of the first movie wanted to see. Like most sequels, it also suffers from the "sequel escalation" phenomenon - the jokes are more outrageous, but not necessarily funnier.

Part I was no masterpiece, but it was very watchable. Part II is still somewhat watchable, but it feels like a cash grab. To sum it up in one word: unremarkable.

Apollo 13 meets Grumpy Old Men. Clint Eastwood's Space Cowboys may not be a cinematic masterpiece (Unforgiven and Million Dollar Baby are far more impressive), but it's a pleasant little story nonetheless. If you like astronaut movies, you'll probably have some fun with it.

lol. That's one of the parts I can't stand.

To me, they felt like a pretty big improvement over "the enemy's scrotum" and Bumblebee pissing.

It's the long action scenes that annoy me. The Chicago battle was exhausting, not exciting. The Avengers has a vastly superior city battle.

Another thing that bothered me about DotM was Shockwave. He looked somewhat ridiculous in the comic book, but he was a fairly well-developed character (badass enough to usurp Megatron). In the movie, he's just another Decepticon soldier. Come to think of it, most robots in those movies have no personalities whatsoever.

Some parts of DotM (like Sam trying to get a job) almost worked for me. ALMOST. In a weird way they reminded me of Coen brothers' movies.

Oh, the Dinobots... I remember them from the Marvel comic book. Even as a kid I thought they're a little too silly, even for Transformers (that was in 1991 or 1992, before the Jurassic Park phenomenon).

A few months ago, some Polish cities introduced mandatory waste segregation. Posters were created to promote this procedure. One of them shows a black kid and a white kid saying: "we support segregation". Talk about awkward...

Speaking of racial issues...

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/fe/Slumdog_millionaire_ver2.jpg

Decades ago, white people used to entertain their children by telling them thrilling stories about distant countries and their exotic (non-white) inhabitants. Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire seems to continue that un-PC tradition by constructing a fairly tale around an existing culture. And an enjoyable fairy tale it is. If you discount the controversial portrayal of India and treat the movie as a purely fictional narrative, you won't be disappointed. It's a genuinely moving "rags to riches" story.

Tony Scott's final movie. It's a fairly effective action thriller, but not a clever one. The character stuff felt somewhat clichéd. Unstoppable is an entertaining one-time watch, but nothing to write home about.

The constantly moving camera reminds me a lot of Michael Bay. After a while it can get tedious (think Revenge Of The Fallen); fortunately, Unstoppable is only 98 minutes long.

I've seen some of the old episodes. They relied way too much on monsters. 1960s monsters look pretty ridiculous in 2014 (it's hard to believe the creature from The Architects Of Fear was considered "too scary for TV" back then). Some of those creatures were reused in Star Trek (that show also inherited some of the Outer Limits crew).

I'd highly recommend The Human Operators and Think Like A Dinosaur from the new series.

Having nothing better to do, I rewatched Transformers: Dark Of The Moon yesterday.

First of all, as we've come to expect of this franchise, the VFX porn is impressive (although the lengthy action scenes get a bit tedious). The story... not so much. It manages to be simplistic and messy at the same time.

This installment, just like the previous two, has some wacky character stuff (fortunately without the blatant racism of Revenge Of The Fallen, although some overly sensitive people may object to Deep Wang and the "assholes" with British accents wink ). For some reason, this time it felt like an attempt at emulating the Coen brothers' movies (maybe it's because of Frances McDormand and John Turturro). A not very successful attempt.

While it was nice to see him, the cameo by Buzz Aldrin felt a little forced. Seems like he was there only to give some dignity to the silly concept of space robots that turn into cars. A good story would've served that purpose better. Leonard Nimoy's appearance could also be considered an attempt to please the geeks, but it still makes much more sense (he has some history with Transformers and his character is crucial to the plot).

Just like Megan Fox, Sam's new girlfriend serves mostly as eye candy. I imagine Michael Bay is not very popular with the feminist crowd.

So basically, to sum it up, it's not a good movie. An improvement over Revenge Of The Fallen, but still not good. It failed where The Avengers succeeded.

Holy shit, this is good. Really good. A crime thriller that delivers drama, tension and excitement. The Departed reminds me a lot of Chris Nolan films. The romantic subplot wasn't absolutely necessary, but it's a minor quibble.

That said, the "Best Picture" Oscar for that year should've probably gone to Children Of Men.

Damn, what a mess... Open Season 2 has very little story, it relies almost exclusively on old-style animated slapstick comedy. The thin plot would be barely enough to fill a 20-minute cartoon.

The Polish dub made the first Open Season movie fairly watchable. It didn't help this time around.

Part 4 of Stephenie Meyer's disturbing fantasy.

SPOILER Show
A girl gets knocked up by a bloodsucking demon and suffers horribly during the pregnancy. Then she gives birth to a mutant baby and becomes a bloodsucker herself. As if that weren't creepy enough, a canine falls in love with the infant. Despite all this, the author seems to consider this story compatible with her Christian faith. I guess a Christian girl can consort with a demon as long as the two don't have premarital sex...

No wonder the EPG classified it as a horror movie. It's oddly fascinating that millions of teenage girls find this twisted shit romantic.

Despite all the horrifying weirdness, Breaking Dawn, Part 1 is just as boring as its three predecessors. I'm not having high hopes for Part 2, but I'll probably watch it anyway when it's on TV in a few months.
