I think we need a 5-hour DIF discussion on file types.

Sweet, thanks.

Yeah I learned the hard way that mp3 had import issues in FCP7 a while back. Steered clear of them ever since (or at least made sure to convert them first).

Gotcha, thanks. Now, for the audio format... wave? aiff? Something else?

Ah, that makes total sense. I guess JPEG is gonna be around a lot longer than today's standard video formats. Maybe I'll start doing that.

I am interested in the "image sequence" discussion though.  You guys kinda briefly touched on it.  Do you always cut in image sequences, or only for special situations?  I've only worked with image sequences one or twice for effects related stuff.

I'm also interested to hear about that. VFX are the only reasons I've had to use image sequences as well. Is there a benefit to using them in the editing process?

I have a little Sony NEX-5N, which I love, and a few cheap/vintage lenses. My brother has the fun toys, which I have access to (score!). He's in the process of building his inventory, and this is what he's got so far:

  • Sony FS700

  • Sony 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3

  • Zeiss 50mm f/1.4

  • Tokina 16-32mm f/2.8

  • Metabones EF-NEX adapter (planning on getting the Metabones Speedbooster in the near future)

  • Rhino Slider Pro (rhinocameragear.com, He just ordered it so it'll be in this week.)

  • We've got a Davis & Sanford tripod with an FM18 fluid head (He'll soon be getting a ball head tripod to go with the slider).

To top it off he's borrowing a light kit from a friend until he needs it back (which probably won't be anytime soon), and I'm not sure what his planned microphone setup is. I do know that 240fps on the FS700 is really fun to play with.  smile

Not a huge plot hole here, and if memory serves it's different in the book, but...

In The Fellowship, it seemed like Gandalf just let go at Khazad-Dum. The Balrog's whip wasn't pulling him anymore, he just kinda let go on his own. That part has always felt weird to me.

Oh, and the eagles thing. But that's been discussed and explained far enough.

GL's got it covered. All you need to know.

Mm. Yeah I've noticed the LOTR Extended Blu-Ray re-grade. More stylistic, less real. Not too crazy though.

Relevant:

Just saw it tonight. I liked it, very funny and entertaining. Some of the characters (e.g. John Malkovich) felt a little incomplete, and it felt weird how though the Zombie apocalypse was a worldwide thing, the city they were in was the only place addressed. In Independence Day they only really dealt with one of the alien ships, but at the end they called to let everyone else know how to take them out, and showed shots of the ships going down around the world. That didn't happen here. The movie in general felt very confined. It gave you 5 or 6 different settings and, for the most part, stuck to them. But it wasn't a huge deal to me, just a little thing. Overall I had a great time with it.

And congrats man!

I think you're taking it too literally. When Down In Front does their thing during a commentary, they "make" better films all the time.

It sounded to me like Smith meant "make" in the literal sense.

Fun short. Cool animation and I thought B&W was a great choice for it. If memory serves, they showed it in theaters before Wreck-It Ralph. Is that right?

Haha, seeing as my question might not get a positive answer in the near future, I'll open it up to breaking the law in general (besides the average speeding ticket, unless it's interesting) to keep things rolling.

I can't find a picture of this online, and I'm not sure exactly what to call it, so I'll use multiple images to try to give you an idea of what this was.

Okay, so this:

But shaped more like this, and without the cap. Just a little glass car.

Filled with water, and a bunch of tiny these (in yellow, orange, and green):

So yeah. Just a little glass car filled with water and little colored smily faces. Sort of like a snow globe. My Aunt gave it to me for Christmas when I was little and I actually kept it on my dresser for a few years. I have no clue where she found a thing like that, or why she thought it might be something I'd like. She's a terrible gift giver. So yeah, weirdest thing I can think of.

So, ever not wear your seatbelt and pay for it (physically or monetarily)?

I saw Mama tonight. I thought the plot was somewhat interesting but they went too conventional with the scare tactics. Those jump scares based on absolutely nothing are really getting old.

Especially when they happen before anything creepy happens in the movie. It's like the movie is introducing itself saying, "Hey I'm a scary movie, so watch out." The story should do that organically if it's gonna happen. It shouldn't have to let you know what kind of movie it is before it starts.

Also, the characters in these movies need to learn to communicate better. If you're going to walk alone deep into the woods after dark, let someone know. And other things like people being hurt and disabled for the perfect amount of time in order for events to unfold perfectly were a little amusing.

It could have been way better, but despite those quirks I almost really liked it. It took some warming up to though. Like almost the entire film I was like "nah", then near the end I was like "hmmm... go on...", then at the very end I was like "... kay?"

So I guess it wasn't the worst horror film out there. And it's not my favorite genre anyway. If someone were to ask me if they should go see it, I'd probably say "sure."
