This just in: NASA announces new homes for space shuttles.

Short version:
Discovery will go to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia, replacing Enterprise which is currently there.

Enterprise will be moved to the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York.

Atlantis will go to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida.

Endeavour will go to California Science Center in Los Angeles.

Personally I'm looking forward to watching Endeavour's last launch later this month, but if things go the way I hope soon, I will regrettably not be here for Atlantis's (indeed the Space Shuttle Program's) last launch later this summer.

It's sad really; it's the end of an era, but unlike our pioneering days into space, the next phase of space exploration doesn't have that same feel of taking new exciting steps forward.

I had no idea we had so many listeners in France.  Bienvenue, et merci mes amis!

Yesterday during the live recording there were members from at least 6 different countries present.  That blew my mind, and I got to thinking about maps.  Remember that corkboard Ellie has in Contact with all the pins in it?  Well we've got one of our own now!

The Down in Front Listener Corkboard

Hit the menu option for Additions, and add a marker, it's that simple.  I'm not entirely sure how much you can edit after the fact, so get in touch with me if you have any issues or want to change something: matt.vayda@gmail.com

Head on over and show us where you're at!

Pretty sure it's off of "What am I doing in New Jersey?"

And fucking hell. The rules regarding liquids is retarded. Now I can't take my standard sized shampoo, deodarant bottles etc. with me because they suspect I'm carrying deadly substances.

No shit brother.  Flying out to L.A. I flew Virgin America.  Great airline, had a great flight, and I'd fly them again in the future.  My one niggle is that unless you're flying business or first class, it's $25 to check a piece of luggage.  I've always checked my luggage, so I've never given much thought to the whole liquids thing.  Also on this trip I was planning on having a heavier bag coming home than going out, so I just packed my wash bag with everything, knowing I was going to check it anyway.

Getting on the plane there were several people who had their little carry on suitcases with them, the kind you can stow in the overhead bin.  I was only going to be away for about 10 days, and I'd only packed for 5.  I could have easily packed in a smaller carry-on, rather than my duffle, and saved myself $50 and at least an hour at the baggage claims.  I'm pretty sure I could have found shampoo when I landed.

Something else I just realized...this movie yet another example of ripping off Surrogates.

I managed to come up with a few titles that seem to play a similar identity card to Body Snatchers.

Disturbing Behavior: Kids are getting brainwashed, and once you're brainwashed you want others to get brainwashed too.

The Faculty: Space slugs in your brain.

The Thing: Honorable mention since the Thing is only ever one person, and not trying to take over everyone at once.

Any chance we can get Ryan to post a link to this year's mashup.mp3?

Also...said film would need an insane VFX budget in order to do any of it justice, like the scene where Arthur and Ford first get picked up by the Heart Of Gold, the books description is these massive vistas of light and sound that can barely be comprehended by the human mind...and in the 2005 we get...a...uh, a talking couch. Um, yeah.

I'm just reading the book now, but my first thought at that scene was "shouldn't Ford be a penguin now?"  I don't recall any mention of couches.  But yeah, if Kubrick could do the 2001 "stargate" sequence in 1968, why can't we top that in 2005?

Not sure; I've only been living there for about eight months, and it's been at least a decade since I've been to any of the theme parks.

Constantine.

I'll say that I think Sucker Punch was going for that kind of ending, but it just kind of falls flat.

I'm super excited, in a few weeks time I will travelling to Florida to watch Endeavour's last launch. This will be the second to last shuttle launch. We both celebrate our 30th this year too.

So who else has seen a launch?

Saw the last launch from too far away with too much cloud cover; going to try to find a better spot for Endeavour.  I live about an hour from the Cape; lemme know if you want to try to link up.

Are we disbanding with the anniversary episode tradition already?

Flying out there to record it next Saturday; should be released next Sunday.  At least that's my understanding.

I'll probably have to turn in my comm badge for this, but I don't think Star Trek: Nemesis is that bad, at least not as bad as everyone seems to make it out to be.  It's still better than Generations or Insurrection, which puts it second to First Contact in terms of the TNG crew.  And while I share most of Brian's points with regard to what's wrong with Trek '09, I still thoroughly enjoy it and look forward to where they take the series next.

Of course if they fuck up the next one, the gloves come off.

I just stumbled across a series of podcasts Wil Wheaton did for his book Memories of the Future, in which he recounts his experiences making TNG.  In episode 12 The Big Goodbye, he recounts his conversation with Lawrence Tierney.  It's pretty much the same way the guys tell it, but coming from the man himself.

The rest of the episodes are equally good.  There are only 14 podcasts, covering the first 13 episodes of TNG, but still, interesting stuff.

Would it be possible to get the show notes in the thread as well as in the file? I remember at least one or two things I wanted to check out that were mentioned but can't remember the names or time codes now.

I'll cover that over in Off Topic.

Chris: I love you man; that video was exactly what I was thinking of.

Back to the topic at hand, I would lean toward the Halo novels.  I haven't read any of them, but Halo has a pretty good story line to begin with; I think that is what makes for a good tie in novel.

Normal and reversed.  I don't recommend it if you've got a young daughter, or even niece.  Didn't entice me to want to play it.
