Sorry dude, but your theory is complete bunk...you wanna know, how I know?
Jim....Carey.
And the fact that any movie with Eddie Murphy in a fat suit, isn't really all that funny.
Although doesn't dissuade Dane Cook being an unfunny hack.

Invid: Got a link for that?
@Beldar: Why wouldn't you?
I loved this movie, I love this era and learning about the day to day life of these kinds of people. I just freakin love the shit outta it, that's about it really.
@Teague: It's not about a family, but Life of Pi has eating the guts out of a turtle shell. Is that what you were thinking of?
Tilda Swinton is a damn sexy woman, so I fail to see your point.

I really don't have anything like that, I have tons of films that I want to see, but just haven't had the time to get around to yet. But nothing that I willing won't watch because I don't think I'll like it (Except maybe Sex and The City, but I really have no shame in that)
Hmm...well I come into this a massive Stargate fan, having seen every episode of both series at least twice, so keep that in mind.
But honestly after the first season sg1 really picked up and I think basically every episode is worth watching because there is so much overlap of bad guys and plot points and characters that it can be hard to follow otherwise.
But if you want just the bare bones of the Lucian Alliance...
Season 9 Episode 16: Off the Grid
Season 10 Episode 9: Company of Thieves
Season 10 Episode 15: Bounty
And that's really all the direct contact we get with them before the blow up Icarus base.
As far as Icaurus base, we get even less about that. By which I mean the only time we see it is in SGU.
But yah like I said before, if you really wanted to know who was who it's really hard to nail them down because there is so much overlap between episodes. But if you really really want I could try to narrow it down a bit.
As far as Atlantis goes, the first little it was pretty rough, but then it really picked up and I really started to like it. And then I went back and watched the first bit again and it wasn't actually so bad. But it definitely gets better as it goes along. I would definitely say watch it (If only just for Chris Heyerdahl as Todd the Wraith)
Never even bothered to watch Infinity.
So yah, go STARGATE! (Probably the closest thing I have to a Brian level Star Trek obsession)
Alright, I remembered the issue I had with the commentary.
You guys spend alot of time saying whats wrong with the movie (The fact that there are 2 separate movies, not really a fairy tale, etc etc etc) and what should be fixed (tie the two movies together yadda yadda), but I didn't hear anything in the traditional Dif style of HOW to fix the movie. I kept waiting for you guys to go into how you would fix the movie, like specifically. But instead you just kept saying tie the 2 plots together. So the question is, how would you do it?
How would you change this movie to make it good?
Well since no one seems to want to take it. I have a monkey...
And a question...
Top 5 movie opening scenes... (I'm thinking of something like the cold open of Knights Tale straight into an entire medieval jousting arena belting out We Will Rock You)
+1 for Casper and hey why not, for Tropic Thunder too. I was actually really surprised by it, in a good way.
MasterZap, you have no idea how much I love you right now.
Just because Pans Labyrinth has fairies in it does not make it a fairy tale.
The overwhelming thing I keep hearing from all you guys, is that it's missing and failing on all of these fairy tale points. So that begs the idea...what if it just isn't a fairy tale? So that's why it doesn't have those points.
It's the same basic concept as Midsummer Night, you assume that this fantasy story is a fairy tale (even though it's not) and then proceed to criticize it for failing on all these aspects that it wasn't trying to do. (Rough comparison, sue me)
No, it was clearly meant to be a fairy tale. The little girl is obsessed with fairy tales. Other characters accuse her of confusing real life with a fairy tale. She tells a fairy tale (badly) to her brother in her mother's womb.
Alright, so basically your entire premise for calling Pans Labyrinth a fairy tale consists of the following:
1)The little girl likes fairy tales: Shes a 10 year old girl...I would be more concerned if she wasn't obsessed with fairy tales. And I don't see how that dictates that it's a set up for a fairy tale story and not a simple fantasy based story.
2)She's accused of mixing fantasy and real life: Again, shes like 10, when aren't they in a fantasy world? And again, that could just as easily be set up for a typical fantasy based story.
3) She tells her brother a fairy tale. Well, what else are you going to tell him? A sherlock holmes story?
Your entire basis for saying this MUST be a fairy tale consist of stuff that any 10 year old would be doing anyways in real life.
Saying it succeeded as a myth (arguable) is just another way of saying it failed as a fairy tale.
And a mystery fails as an action adventure, whats your point?
You won't be laughing when you hear how this one ends.
(The Weakerthans - Relative Surplus Value)
If you liked Far From Heaven but want something completely different, check out one of Todd Haynes earlier films called "Velvet Goldmine." Its like if Citizen Kane was made about David Bowie. Its got Bale and McGregor along with Toni Collette and Eddie Izzard and its bat shit crazy in all the right ways. Lot of exposed weiner, but lots of awesome music. You get to see Placebo covering "20th Century Boy" as well. Give it a looksy.
My god, that sounds amazing.
Beldar beat me to it, but I have a few of my favorites... (And I don't have anything for the next topic)

Anyways back to the topic at hand.
@ Dorkman: Honestly I think the main thing that drew me to it was,
1) gore, yeah!
2) This dark twisted fantasy aspect that I had never really seen before or since really (I mean even Hellboy is still pretty campy if you think about it). I mean I have yet to find a movie that could stradle the creepy weird creatures, that will scare you shitless, and the fairy tale thing without crossing over into a campy, sort of not really taking itself totally serious (Lord of The Rings is the closest thing, but even that's more just straight up fantasy than it is fairy tale)
3) I was young, wasn't really thinking about movies in that kind of a way before (I was 14 when this came out), and I never really sat down and looked at it like that since then
(If you can't tell, you guys definitely swayed my opinion on this one, although I do have some issues to bring up when the official topic is posted)
@teague: wait!! That's who were referring to in the thing?...dude...well i mean it does make more sense than the other one. Cause I could not understand that one. ( I mean shes....alright, but really?)
Wow, awesome. Thanks guys.
I;ve already seen, Synechdoche, New York and Catch Me if You Can though.
Syn: confused the shit outta me and I have no clue what to think of it
Catch me: loved every minute of it
For anyone interested, over the last two days I have seen the following for the first time...
1)Girlfriend Experience...interesting movie, still not quite sure what to make of it (but hey you know Sasha Grey so woot! She really needs to do more actor actor type roles, shes really good)
2)Labyrinth...you know my thoughts on that one
3)Inkheart...better than I anticipated and I still heart Brendan Fraser
4)A Knights Tale....fucking amazing...totally not what I expected but fuckin awesome (And I now officially have a seriously major crush on Shannyn Sossamon, if you'll notice shes in 3 of the movies I watched...yah, shes cool)
5)What Dreams May Come- I had no clue what to expect going in and I was utterly blown away, very very good movie
6)Wristcutters: A love Story...Another one I watched only because it caught my eye on Shannyn Sossamon's imdb. But whatya know it's a great little indie flick. really cool concept and really well done, highly recommended.
7)Kiss Kiss bang Bang...oh Robert Downey Jr. how has it taken so long for me to find this?? This movie did nothing if not reaffirm my undying love for RDJ, and you know Michelle Monaghan was pretty good to I guess.
I'm really digging on this whole watching new movies thing, it's kinda fun.
PS. If you couldn't tell from the odd flow of movies. I somehow stumbled into a weird game in all this (namely you can thank Shannyn Sossamon, she started it). Basically you start with a random movie, you watch it, then you go to the Imbd page and find a memorable actor from said film (Not necessarily the main character or even a supporting character, just someone who caught your eye), find that actor, go to thier imdb page, scroll through til you find a movie you think might be good. Watch said movie. Repeat ad nausium.
(If the case arises that your actor does not have any credits you might find interesting, pick one at random. Or if they have no other credits period, you move to your second favorite actor, etc.)
Anyone else ever do this? So far I went from
Knights Tale->Wristcutters->kiss Kiss Bang bang-> It's a tie between Chasing Ghosts (leading from Shannyn again) or Scanner Darkly (Leading from RDJ), so I guess it's both
I will when I get home
~1 hour
I was using "fuck off" as a general summation of the oncept. Not as a specific reference.
Also, yeah, hey, Welcome aboard the crazy train Cloe!
And i havn't heard anyone call it a Dark masterpiece, or whatever. It's just everyone who has ever brought it up has said that I NEEEED to see it. So I extraploated.
Alright so it's basically a combination of "we grew up loving it so fuck off" and "meh it's a kids movie, fuck off.".
Guess I wasn't really missing the all great epicness that I hear every one talk about when referencing this movie and how I absolutely NEEED to see it.
So they yah go.
I wouldn't say I have a favorite epi, but I definitly try to listen to each episode AT LEAST twice. And then I'll usually go back and listen to old episodes every once and a while. They make a really nice background to have when working, not distracting but interesting.
I actually just did a prequel marathon a couple days back, it was fun.
Alright I'll give yah that yes, Ludo is awesome. But you know, it's the same as Pan's the creatures on thier own are awesome, it would just be great if they had a point.
But honestly (Despite the fact that she's like, 16 in Labyrinth) she really doesn't do much for me.
That would be awesome, cause she kinda sounded like she knew what she was talking about in Pans, (Although, on the whole I have a looooot of quams with that one in general, mostly unanswered questions, (that is, unless you answered them in the missing wrap up))
Anyways, yah, I'd been wanting to get around to this one for a while, and I mean I thought I would love it, and everyone I've ever heard talk about it loves it. So I'm seriously just wondering wtf?
I wonder if it's just one of those childhood things, where everyone just grew up loving this movie and thats sorta stuck...
