Finished two books today.

Gunslinger (Stephen King)
Pretty good. Amazing storytelling. Hard to see this made into a TV series though. I will be reading on but I need to cleanse the palate before I venture back into The Dark Tower series.

Born Standing Up (Steve Martin)
Pretty quick read. Totally explains why he left stand-up. Nowhere to go for him but down. Better to translate his success into movies than suffer the fate of once famous but now just footnote stand-up's (look at Andrew Dice Clay). I was a Steve Martin fan before, still am.

My favorite would probably be To Catch a Thief with Cary Grant and Grace Kelly. I was so young when I saw it and it has stuck with me ever since.

After the Fox, Out of Sight, Ronin and Heat are pretty great too.

Also rereading Call of Cthulu because it had been way too damn long since I read it.

Pulled up and re-read Call of Cthulu today. Took me back to my RPG days where we played both Call of Cthulhu and Cthulhu Now. Never got very far in those sessions. We always turned mad before we could tackle the adventure.

Have you guys read Neil Gaiman's short story "A Study in Emerald"? It's a fantastic read.
A Study in Emerald (pdf)

How about posting hints, tips, tricks and tutorials for your weapons of choice (software, cameras, film-making, editing etc). Maybe something you wished you would have known when you were beginning to learn or something you have incorporated into your workflow.

Two here from me. The first one I use all the time, the second one I wish someone would have told me when I first started messing about with After Effects.

Find grey for colour correction (Photoshop)

With the image open in Photoshop
1) Make new layer and fill it with 50% grey.
2) Change the blend mode to difference.
3) Add Threshold adjustment. Drag the white slider all the way to the left. When you start dragging the slider back to the right, the first things you see are the grey areas.
4) Choose couple of grey spots so when you look for the grey in the image for colour correction you have much better chance of finding your grey's.

Using Audio in After Effects

Don’t use mp3 file format in your project. You will get audio problems in the final render.
Open the song or audio file in Quicktime or a converter of your choice and then export it as AIFF file and import that one into your project for better results.

And most importantly.... A Feast of Ice and Fire the official Game of Thrones cookbook.  I will be doing weekly recipe's when the new season starts.

The food descriptions in the A Song of Ice and Fire books border on pornographic at times. Can't say the Balrog burger did not pop up in my mind few times reading the last book in the series. Stay away from the honeyed locusts though if you do not have the constitution of Strong Belwas.

My boys!

This is the insanity that is Icelandic new year fireworks. It's so extreme that tourists travel here just to watch this craziness (and the northern lights).

Few year ago Kiefer Sutherlandwas here over the new years.

"I saw probably the most extraordinary firework display in my life. There's no laws in Iceland with regard to fireworks, which makes New Year's Eve very interesting. It's a small population but they spend over $15 million for fireworks for that night.

It's like a warzone. There's no organisation to it... I saw a six-year-old carrying a 30-pound mortar with another six-year-old following behind with a match.

I filmed it because I didn't think anyone back home would believe it." Kiefer Sutherland

Finished A Dance with Dragons today. Much better than A Feast for Crows. I would say George R.R. Martin is back to form. No spoilers but there are some bat shit insane left turns waiting for you if you are reading the series.

Looking for the next book to read... any suggestions?

What might be interesting is the selective use of HFR within a movie to help differentiate another world e.g. inside Tron's "Grid", or entering The Matrix, or with a level 4 Inception dream, or as a human is reincarnated as a Na'vi. So the real world is bog-standard 2D 24fps, and then it goes into 3D HFR as the protagonist plugs himself into... enters the portal... re-awakens, etc.

I dunno - just spitball'n

Yeah, that's what I was saying earlier. Wondering how that would look.

It's one way to use the medium for sure. It reminds me of the trivia that the "video" portion of Pulp Fiction with Mia was shot on digital video and blown up to match. Turned out pretty nice.

Great episode

Made me revisit the series and I'm probably going to go through the commentaries too when/if I have the time in the next few weeks.

Favorite episodes: Out of Gas, Objects in Space, Jaynestown
Favorite characters: Mal (if he's eligible) Jane, River
Favorite quote: I aim to misbehave!

I had never heard about Inara´s medical condition before, it makes perfect sense when you hear about it though.

Firefly 80's style

This one is going to get some forum members goat. Firefly and Prometheus exist in the same universe.

p.s. I don't think Tom Clancy was the inventor of Crazy Ivan, neither the name or the manoeuvre. The term can be found in Cold War literature long before Tom Clancy wrote about it (USS Parche crewman wrote about the term years before TC used it). It's a little like Ctrl+Alt+Delete, David Bradley wrote it into the code it but Bill Gates made it famous.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Although the year as a whole has been a nightmare things are getting better in the last few months and her condition is so, so much better than the doctors dared to hope. We are looking at years of recovery but she she hails from the same stock as the Gurkhas which are pretty much the toughest people you will ever find. Going from life support and looking at possible death to her current condition in a span of months not years is nothing short of a miracle (Christmas miracle?).

Pack of 24 AA batteries??? In a single packet without context? It got to be one of the strangest Christmas present I've ever heard of this year.

Gleðileg Jól Öllsömul - Merry Christmas Everybody

I also want to wish everyone a happy, and safe Christmas.

The year 2012 will go down for me as annus horribilis.
These last 12 months have been been particularly difficult for me and my family.
Early this year my wife was hospitalized with a life threatening virus which left her paralyzed from shoulders down for a long time. Her recovery has been long and difficult and there are at least 18 months more before we can begin to say how much of her strength will come back. She is doing much better and she can now walk unsupported at home and most of her coming and goings are with the aid of crutches which is a miracle when you look at worst case scenario. My younger son has been living with my parents for this difficult time only visiting on weekends. He just returned home for good late October. Most of my time has been spent in hospitals and DIF and the forums have saved my sanity many long sleepless nights.

I have nothing but utmost respect for the members and the intellect of the discussion here. I love reading your words and sometimes the best posts are the one's I don't agree with. The variety of opinions are a food for thought.

To the DIF community I thank you from the bottom of my heart for saving my sanity on many occasions, both on the live chat and with your insightful, witty and intelligent posts. Merry Christmas everybody!

From Iceland with love - Eiríkur Jónsson

p.s. Here is a Christmas song from Iceland. The song is by a band my friend is the drummer in. This version is only with the singer of the band, Magni. You might (or not) remember the singer from a horrible "reality" TV show called RockStar Supernova.
