I still think it's either 12 Years, Gravity, or American Hustle. They all have strong points for and against. 12 Years seems like the obvious pick because of its serious "important"-seeming take on a historical tragedy, but like Zarban said, Rich Old White Men. Gravity's effects are revolutionary, but they might be so good that those older voters won't even think about the craft involved in making the film, and the story isn't great or anything. American Hustle, meanwhile, is kinda fun and it doesn't make you think, and people really seem to like it. Also, the Academy seems to like the 70s right now, as evidenced by Argo's win. They're all strong contenders.

To your spoiler: I'm not sure what you're getting at. "well it was a good movie, but it didnt play by my film school textbook, so its no good, I give it 1 star" makes no sense. If it's a bad movie, it's a bad movie. Literally no one has ever said this.

The fact that it changes tones so rapidly and unexpectedly is a bad thing. It is a thing that good movies shouldn't do. You can enjoy it if you want, that's perfectly alright. But we're not talking about enjoyment. We're talking about quality. It's not about "playing by some rulebook." Sunshine does something in its third act that fundamentally changes the kind of movie it is, and what it becomes is dumber than what it was. For me, and the podcast hosts, that's a major mark against the film.

So when you say, "the movie was good, therefore, it shouldn't matter why it was good," I'm confused as to what your point is. If you don't care about what makes a movie good, then there's no point in arguing about exactly that, right? Maybe you could clarify? I'm genuinely confused and I want to understand what you're saying.

We're talking about two different things. Plot-wise, it was foreshadowed, sure. But the way that Boyle depicted it was not. It did turn into a slasher movie. And there's probably a way to do that while keeping it in line with everything that came before.

I agree with most of Zarban's picks, except for Captain Phillips for Best Picture. The ending isn't exactly feel-good, and if the Academy really loved Hanks they'd have nominated him for Best Actor (or even Best Supporting Actor for Saving Mr. Banks.)

I don't think the problem is scientific. It's tonal. Sunshine turns into a completely different kind of movie in the last half-hour, and it's not nearly as good.

So, last night's season premiere was incredible. To build on my True Detective comparison, I think that Hannibal is just as beautiful (the final shot of the episode was gorgeously shot, which made it all the more horrifying) but the writing is much, much better.

Yeah, apparently there were tons of different potential cuts, and different characters started the film each time. One of them started with a flash-forward to Agent Hill talking to the scary secret government television people about what happened during the battle, and then it flashed back. There's also a long montage of Captain America's life that was supposed to come at the beginning (that gave that random waitress character a better intro) but Whedon felt that there was starting to be too much of him in the film.

Lol, you're actually not the first person I've seen say this. I really liked it!

And yeah, PorridgeGun, you gotta start explaining these ratings. Hunger Games is an 8 and There Will Be Blood is a 6.5? At least give us a sentence.

I loved it, but I absolutely understand why someone would hate it.

* Except maybe Upstream Color, which I haven't seen yet.

I think Upstream Color is probably more divisive because its style is so esoteric. All Is Lost may be hard to sit through, but at least there's nothing weird or incomprehensible happening.

Yeah, she's from the comics and the actress is on How I Met Your Mother. Frankly, I'm glad she survived, if only because she's one of two women in the entire film.

I think the show makes a fantastic counter-part to True Detective. True Detective tackles its surreal material subtly, using it as an undercurrent to enhance the mood. Hannibal fully embraces it, though. It's a dreamy opera of gore.

Do we have a thread for this already? Probably not. Whatever. You guys need to start watching this show yesterday. It's a really smart exploration of the effects of violence and violent imagery on the psyche disguised as another in a long line of recent gory horror-cop dramas. Also, Mads Mikkelsen's Hannibal takes Anthony Hopkins' to the fucking cleaners.

Good interview with Nic Pizzolatto, with some minor spoilers (marked) as he teases the final two episodes. He says he hopes the ending will be "surprising but inevitable" for viewers. He uses those exact words. Funny.

I think this really gets to the darkness at the heart of the human condition.

Yeah, it's not like other "dark and gritty reboots" that we've recently seen. The original is already really dark. All they have to do is match it.

Trailer is... acceptable, but that's only the first hurdle. Second hurdle: rotten tomatoes score needs to be over 80%. Only then will I allow Godzilla to kindly take my money.

Let's be honest: the more the film is like a REAL Godzilla film, the lower the score will be. I'm going to be very curious as to what standard people hold this movie up to.

Depends on what you think of as a "real" Godzilla movie. I think this remake is going for the serious, morbid tone of the original film.

The big issue is that this leans hard on city destruction porn, and I may just be over that stuff at this point.

Agreed, but unlike Man of Steel and a lot of films of that ilk recently, this film focuses on the ordinary human victims of Godzilla's rampage, so I'm okay with it.

This kind of criticism isn't one I'd ever instinctively argue with, because in almost all cases it's a valid point, but it's really off-base here and it misses a lot of the show's narrative subtlety. I saw someone bring up on Twitter that it's the same argument that people made against The Wolf of Wall Street, and it's just as wrong. Depicting something isn't the same thing as endorsing it. True Detective has always - to some extent - been about subverting traditional masculinity and male values in society. I think if you look past the lack of meaningful female characters, you find that the show is doing that on purpose.

I'm not thrilled with how they wrapped up the 2002 storyline.

  Show
Up to this point, this hasn't been a show that's gone for obvious plot development, but "Partners break up because one's wife sleeps with the other" is about as cliche as it gets. And that whole scene was so awkwardly staged. I just didn't buy it.

Oh well. Here's hoping that the next two episodes are worth it.

How does The Thing fit into that?

Well, there was a ton of backlash when it got remade, but I think that was more nostalgia than "perfection." The original is great, of course.

Marvel Studios Developing Stand-Alone Black Widow Film

To be fair, Marvel hasn't done a female-led film yet either.

To be fairer, Marvel's featured Black Widow really prominently in the past few years, she apparently has a very big role in the new Captain America, and I'd be shocked if she didn't get a solo film in Phase 3.

And as long as we're on that subject, notice how Gamora's outfit in the poster isn't ridiculously revealing and her pose (while kinda goofy) isn't explicitly showing off her body. Well, maybe that's there to an extent. But no more so with her than with Drax. Same thing in the trailer. There's an obligatory sexy shot of her back, but it comes immediately after a similarly sexy shot of Star-Lord. And while there's obviously a big difference between the two (as was discussed at length in the thread for the Avengers commentary) it's a sign that Gamora isn't there for sex appeal any more than the male leads are. Which is refreshing. It's not like the shot of what's-her-face in the Star Trek Into Darkness trailer, which was literally, "HERE'S A WOMAN IN HER UNDERWEAR, COME SEE THIS MOVIE NERDS."
