Nice to see Godzilla fucking up Las Vegas.

That wouldn't have happened if the Mafia was still in charge.

I, for one, am tired of darker more realistic takes.

I disagree, I think you greatly over-estimate people's cultural familiarity with Godzilla. My guess is 90% of US audiences have never seen a Godzilla movie, except for maybe the shitty Emerich version. They'll be far more open to a grounded, scary-movie tone than to a silly Pacific Rim-type approach.

I assume they think Godzilla means low budget guy in suit walking through HO scale models. My point is using the Godzilla name is going to bring baggage in the US that will work against WHATEVER approach you use. Maybe this film will finally change how US audiences view the character. Maybe it will tank because those that went wanted stupid monsters in a campy movie, and were disappointed. We'll have to see.

Trailer is... acceptable, but that's only the first hurdle. Second hurdle: rotten tomatoes score needs to be over 80%. Only then will I allow Godzilla to kindly take my money.

Let's be honest: the more the film is like a REAL Godzilla film, the lower the score will be. I'm going to be very curious as to what standard people hold this movie up to.

IIRC there were contract negotiations needed for season seven. The idea of replacing cast if they got too difficult was always there (If they killed Picard in Best of Both Worlds, they had a second officer right there to step in when Riker became captain)

I don't listen to it much, apart from the "mighty movie temple of bad" episodes. I'm not much of a SF movie geek anymore smile

You kids have probably never heard of Starlog. For some of us, though, in the 70's and 80's, it was the go-to magazine to get your SF information. At least, if you wanted nice happy and colorful studio propaganda smile Eventually I moved on to Cinefantastique (which now exists as a podcast), but you can now read most of the old Starlog archives online. Of particular interest might be issue 120, their Star Wars spectacular from 1987. See how the films were viewed in the pre-prequel days!

Recruiter: Are either of you... homosexual?
Ramis: No we're not homosexual, but we are willing to learn.
Bill Murray: Yeah, would they send us someplace special?

Right, that's been the big thing during the modern blockbuster era. They hire the guy who reflects the character and give them the physique to fit the role. I saw a retweet from Pratt saying something like "Yeah, but shooting's over so I'm back to a 1-pack now."

It's no different than hiring Olympic swimmers to play Tarzan, and then changing the character from being highly educated to the "Me Tarzan" savage we know so the actor can handle the dialog. Remember, the "B" in Blockbuster stands for "B Movie".

OK, I know I saw that when it came out, all excited because Frank Miller wrote it. I can honestly say I don't remember a single thing that was in that trailer smile

This looks awesome and hilarious. The self-aware side that Dr. Sub is referring to is what'll make it great.
It's Marvel's Star Wars, and I think it's gonna be wild.

Maybe we'll see that green rabbit guy from the Star Wars comic.

(now that Disney owns Marvel and Star Wars, there's no reason for that race not to appear in future Star Wars stories)

I don't mind a lot of the asides and weird tire-spinning subplots that don't seem to go anywhere. The thing that bothers me is how busy the show seems now. There are SO MANY subplots. It's impossible to keep them all straight. In the first season there were maybe four or five different things you had to keep track of. In this season there are literally dozens of things going on in every episode, and new things keep popping up in every one. It's ludicrous.

Is this a factor of them knowing most viewers will watch most or all the episodes at once? That is, they think they don't have to worry about viewers forgetting things between episodes.

I should have mentioned this because it's funny. This person I know got agitated with me. He asked me how GRAVITY was. I said it was good, unforgettable. He said "Oh really?" I said yeah. Pause. So I started to explain, very generally, why I feel that way. He got mad when I revealed the film's running time. "Man, why'd you have to say how long it is?!"

I can see his point. My sister's main complaint about the film was that, after a certain point, you knew nothing would happen to the other character until the end. To know when that ending is removes the only real suspense. Now, on the other side, it's only really a spoiler if your friend tends to check his watch during movies smile

There's a similar spoilage if you watch something like TV Poker. The games have been edited down to fit a one hour time slot, so if there's one minute left and one player has all their money in the pot, you know they've lost as there's no time for another hand.
