When [inciting incident], [main character] must [premise] or else [catastrophe].

It doesn't work for every story but it'll at least get you in the ballpark.

STC makes me foam at the mouth a little bit, but I do agree with one point he makes about loglines: if you can't make your story interesting in a logline, there's a good chance it's just not interesting. And if the interesting logline doesn't accurately represent the script, the logline is telling you the script you should be writing.

Full disclosure: I am not very good at loglines myself.

I heard they had to start calling it CPK because it's so modified the FDA won't let them say "California" anymore.

What's your purpose in adding weight training to your regimen? Are you lifting more for strength, for aesthetics, is there a body part you feel doesn't get adequate attention through Crossfit? What's the goal?

Oh, I've been going every day, I just haven't been logging it. I often don't have good reception at the gym so I started tracking in a notebook and haven't bothered to copy over.

I'm actually about to head to the gym right now. I'll log it today just for you.  wink

Someone did this with the James Bond movies, taking five minutes each from the pre-Skyfall films and supercutting them in order (i.e. supercut minutes 1-5 are 1-5 of DR. NO, supercut minute 6-10 is 6-10 of FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE, etc.) into a single film as a film studies-esque exploration of the "Bond Formula." I haven't watched it yet, but I've seen comments by those who have to the effect that it almost works.

As it stands, in the last 50 years women have moved forwards so much in society that while sure, there are pockets of life where they are legitimately oppressed or behind, I don't think it's worth being so angry about something that is clearly fading.

But you can afford to think this way. If progress stalls, halts, or even reverses, it doesn't affect you nearly as much.

It wouldn't affect me, either, in terms of gender discrimination. But it's still wrong, it's still there, and the only reason the progress you mention has been made in the last 50 years is because people on the side of equality angrily demanded it. It would be foolish to take the pressure off, especially when such a wave of pushback has risen up in the last decade or so.

But what is the difference between every girl I know watching the trailer for Magic Mike and going "I would fuck the shit out of those guys." (Literal quote from one of my friends... and several more had variations on it), and a guy watching the trailer for Transformers or Avengers or whatever and thinking or saying the exact same thing about Megan Fox or ScarJo or whoever?

MAGIC MIKE is one movie.

TRANSFORMERS or AVENGERS or whatever are all other movies.

Also, it's worth noting the counterexamples of male objectification being brought to bear here -- MAGIC MIKE, TWILIGHT -- are all extremely recent examples with a very limited sample size, whereas the examples of women existing solely in the context of the men around them goes back pretty much the whole way. See: the Bechdel test.

We all already know the story even before the trailer. It's a tentpole. Which means the story is... villain wants to fuck shit up, there are early scenes where he fucks shit up to show he's serious, heroes chase villain to the final show-down, there's a punch-up during a count-down, and with seconds to spare, the heroes win the day, roll credits. This accounts for the majority of tentpoles now.

Unless it's the second installment in a planned trilogy, in which case it's basically this but stops halfway through, leaving everything unresolved until the next one.

To be fair, we're talking about the plot more than the story. You can boil down any genre like this. The great movies are the ones that make the familiar journey enjoyable to take.

It's weird to say, but I have absolutely no feelings about this movie at all. I'll go see it, but I just have no feelings about it. It's looks like it will be a thing...so...okay.

This is how I feel about pretty much every movie now. I basically consider it part of my job to see movies like this and HOBBIT and the like, but I don't get hyped about them anymore.

Oh Christ, WATERWORLD. That sure was a day. We kept having to stop so Netflix could buffer, and while it was a good episode all things considered, it really wasn't good enough to warrant the amount of work it would take to splice it together for sync.

Regarding the earlier discussion re: "lost" commentaries, here's a list of ones I remember doing that never received a release. Keep in mind that there are commentaries that DID get released which I don't remember doing, so I'm probably forgetting plenty.

Lost commentaries later re-recorded and released:

A.I.: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE - One of our very first recordings, in fact I believe it was our second, recorded the same day as PHANTOM MENACE. Audacity took a massive shit and despite our best efforts the episode was unsalvagable.

DAWN OF THE DEAD '78 - We recorded a commentary for this film, but afterward felt that we could do better. The following weekend we did a new commentary for this film in a double-feature with the 2004 remake.

KICK-ASS - Recorded the same day as SUCKER PUNCH and SOURCE CODE, our first attempt to comment on this film imploded about mid-way through when the mixer came unplugged. Having already done two films and being an early party episode, we decided to cut our losses and just abandon the commentary.

TRON - We lost steam about 2/3 of the way through this commentary, crawling painfully to the finish line. Given that we felt we had plenty to say about TRON: LEGACY, we felt we needed to release something for the original, and we recorded and released a much better episode.

THE FRIGHTENERS - We recorded a full episode for this film which we were quite happy with, but the file became corrupted and when we went to release it we discovered two hours of silence in the file.

STRANGE DAYS - Originally recorded with guest commentator Eric Webb (if memory serves), our first attempt at a STRANGE DAYS commentary suffered a similar mysterious silencing.

Commentaries never released due to either technical error or simply not being up to snuff, not yet re-recorded:

HELLBOY
THE GREEN MILE
SAVING PRIVATE RYAN
GROUNDHOG DAY
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST
THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON
HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS
ZOMBIELAND
THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON

Those are all the ones I remember, though I'm sure there were more over the last four years, especially early on.

I was super tempted to bullshit and throw in titles like CITIZEN KANE and BTTF2 but I refrained.

I don't even remember how to link to our store, let alone set up new items. We stopped using it quite a while ago because it wasn't really doing much. (I think over the course of its maybe-a-year run with new items added weekly, it made us on the order of five bucks.)

Unless it costs something, we should do it anyway. Especially on an ep where we tell people to buy stuff like books.

EDIT: We don't have to add stuff to the store, btw. We can just make referral links right here on the board. Send me the DIF Amazon info and I can add it to the thread here.

You would probably be asked to edit it and not do so again. If you feel the tension rising about it, then that should be taken as a clue as to how well it is likely to be received, regardless of your personal experience with it.

Ugh, I hate doing this, but I'm putting on my mod voice now:

EVERYONE CHILL OUT. WE'RE NOT TALKING ABOUT THIS ANY MORE.

We've gotten to the point of people becoming overly aggravated and this isn't even the topic of the thread. It should have been reined in a long time ago but we try to be hands-off here at DIF because things are generally chill. But things are pretty much about to go over the edge and they're not going to be allowed to do so.

The topic is the documentary "Backyard Blockbusters" and the Down In Front episode pertaining thereto. Further discussion of copyright and piracy in this thread, or flames or insults, will result in temporary cool-off bans and the offending posts will be removed.

And you can have a conversation about it without spelling it out, so in my view there's no need to do so. The DIF forums are not meant to be a comprehensive reference source as Wikipedia is, so the circumstances are different.

You're all arguing about money. That's the issue here. Remove it from the equation and suddenly none of you will care who copies/downloads what.

If you have a way to remove money from the equation, I'm listening. But ultimately it's a big part of the equation because it determines access to basic resources like food and shelter, never mind cars and internets.

Obviously, as fan filmmakers (hey the topic kind of), we have lived in the world of not worrying about money or who views or downloads our stuff. But that's a choice we made on particular projects -- that we cared more about getting it made having it seen than recouping our time/energy/monetary investment. Until we don't have to earn money to eat or live, in the long term earning money is an issue, yes.
