So, yeah, it was awesome. More later, now sleep.
Woo-whoo!
I'm a fan of wallpapers, and I actually tried to find something like this first, but my search was fruitless, so I said screw it and made my own. It's full HD, enjoy!
A group of DIFers including myself will be attending the midnight showing in Hollywood tonight. I had a blast with the first one, and I'm anticipating a good time tonight as well.
Maybe you could replace the iTunes podcast feed with a new one with all the episodes, ending with a pointer to the new Down in Front feed. I was amused, after downloading the Crystal Skull commentary via Zarban's, not to see it listed when I subscribed to Geekza.
iTunes get get's it's feed from this page, which is where TalkShoe would dump the recordings after the show. Since the quality was usually meh, they would (usually) record via Audacity, and post that high-rez version later on the site.
But I'm sure you knew that.
As for the Crystal Skull commentary not being on iTunes, that's simply because it wasn't recorded in the chat room, but rather like we do DIF now, pre-recorded. Since it never went through TalkShoe, it couldn't be part of the feed that iTunes checks for new episodes.
So that's that, now...
I've gone through and found what high quality episodes I had and uploaded them, including a few that aren't on iTunes such as, Crystal Skull, Episode 36, and a few of what came to be know as "Preekza!"s, pre-show recordings from early episodes. I've also put up a few that are still available through iTunes, but are favorites, such as VFX and You!, and the RvD2 premier.
In terms of integrating the high-rez episodes seamlessly into your iTunes library, here's my method:
1. Download all the episodes through iTunes.
2. Select all the episodes, right click, Get info.
3. Under the Options tab, change Media Kind to Music (you can also optionally select Remember Playback Position and Skip When Shuffling at this point, or you can do it later).
4. Don't panic! The episodes will disappear from the Podcast section of your library, and Geekza will appear as an Artist under Music.
5. Download a high-rez episode from the DIF Geekza! page, and drop it into iTunes, it should show up under Artist/ Geekza.
6. At this point you should have two copies of said episode, so delete the crappy version, and rename the high-rez using whatever naming/ sorting convention works for you.
The files I've uploaded follow a convention that works for me, keeping in mind that there are 3 seasons and 59 episodes (there is no episode 56 that I am aware of) covering 64 files. Most are labeled as Podcast, but commentaries are labeled, well, Commentary. For the most part I've kept whatever title the show was given in iTunes.
When syncing your device, "Check" the episodes you want synced, and under your device, under Sync Artist, select Geekza.
I actually do the same thing with DIF. Placing podcasts into Music allows you to rename them, reorganize them, change artwork, whatever, without screwing up the podcast. I'm also a bit lazy when it comes to listening to certain podcasts, and they tend to stack up -- what I hate about listening to a podcast in iTunes is that when you finish an episode, it doesn't automatically play the next one; you have to go back into iTunes and select the next one to play it. Changing the files to Music allows iTunes to play the next episode automatically like any other album.
There's all kinds of fun you can have playing around with the ID3 tag, which is really all you're doing with Get info.
Anyway, Geekza!, enjoy!
The Downward Spiral was my "gateway" album, and it still holds the number 3 position, proceeded by The Slip (love all but the instrumentals) and Year Zero (counting R3MIX3D). The track that got me hooked was Dead Souls from The Crow.
In a way I own my appreciation of modern music in general to NIN. Before NIN I sort of lumped all of hard rock and heavy metal into just obnoxious noise. Dead Souls hooked me, then The Downward Spiral came out and I actually took the time to listen to it.
Actually now that I think about it, that was the beginning of my ability to critique; giving NIN a shot, and finding I liked it taught me not to judge before I'd given a reasonable chance.
I guess that's the lesson then; don't be to quick to judge, you might find you like it.
I draw the line at talking about cucumbers on the internet.
Nah, the spray on stuff is way more genital, that is gentle, than the lotion stuff, though it does smell the same, that is, bad.
Or so I've heard.
Also, use a fresh razor blade for god's sake.
Heck, they make spray on foam that's a lot more comfortable than that. It's really quite a thing to see, you should try it sometime.
*pinky finger to corner of mouth, kill's henchman*
...and if you can beat this guy's story....uh, you win?
Ok, now who's writing who's biography Jeff.
So the longest movie has the shortest notes? Interesting...
It is, isn't it?
Been wondering when you'd get around to doing something like this.
You can still get all the shitty TalkShoe versions through iTunes, but I for one would welcome whatever Audacity versions are available.
Heck, anyone have any copies of DLR lying around? Never heard any of those, that'd be a hoot.
Though you can skip the comic if you watch the webisodes.
Link?
As your making you way through the Alien franchise, will you have a chance to do the Predator movies as well, eventually?
I'd second that vote.
Sorry for the delay everybody.

Trent Reznor has started a new group called How to Destroy Angels with his new bride, Mariqueen from West Indian Girl.?
Awesome, glad to see Trent still making music; looking forward to seeing what they produce.
Happy (belated) Birthday Shadow!
On the topic of backing up: I currently have a small box that I carry around labeled "Time Machine," that contains an internal 3.5 inch hard drive and a lot of packing peanuts.
Let me back up (heh, heh...) a bit. In August '07 I bought my first (and only...so far) Mac, a Macbook Pro with a 160GB drive (an MA896LL/A if you really want to know). Some time later OS 10.5 came out with a new feature called Time Machine, essentially a backup utility. I upgraded, and decided to go with an external 320 GB drive for backup. I connected it via USB, using one of these. If you don't have one, it's well worth it to have in your kit; their dead useful, and at the time I was thinking I'd upgrade the internal as well, and would need a way to clone the drive. Anyway...
At the time I was working for the now all but gone Ritz Camera, and I would usually bring my Mac with me (can you see where this is going?). So one fateful day in May last year I hit the "Backup Now" button, packed up my Mac, and went to work. That night it was stolen as I was helping a customer. If you've ever had a computer stolen (actually that was my second stolen computer now I think of it ), or even lost a wallet, phone, or hard drive (thankfully I've never lost any of those), then you know that sinking feeling you get (I know at least one member of these forums this has also happened to).
Fortunately I have a backup image of my old Mac in the form of that drive in that box, but until now (and for the immediate future) I can't afford what it would cost to replace it.
What is great, is that when that fateful day comes, I can restore my new machine to the same state as my old machine in a matter of hours.
Until then, I'll continue to cart around my little "Time Machine" in the hopes that one day I can bring my old machine back to life.
So, anyone got an old MacBook Pro lying around they want to donate to a good cause?
Did Cameron ever do a commentary for "Titanic?"
Yeah, it's on the 3 disc edition, hard to find now, but worth the effort if you can. I say I hope we get a director commentary, because Cameron states early on in the Titanic commentary that he finds directors commenting on their own movies "suspect." Still, that was some time ago, and we did get one for Titanic and Aliens, so I'm sure we'll get one for Avatar.
Oh come on. I can't possibly be the only one who genuinely liked the movie, can I?
I did. I'm looking forward to a proper video release though; if any movie was made for a special features disc (or two) it would be this one, and hopefully we'll get a director commentary as well.
Do you really think everybody thinks about that kind of thing?
Well, yes. To some degree anyway. It's just logic. We're social creatures, and we possess an imagination, so sooner or later it's inevitable to wonder, even in passing, what it would be like to be on our own.
Granted, I doubt that everyone goes so far as to come up with a "zombie plan," which is really all this is, but I believe it crosses everyone's mind at some point.
That's another reason I like it as a story. The best stories tap into things that everyone can relate to, even if they've never actively thought about it; the ones that make you go, "I've never thought about that before," and then make you think about it.
Jeff: Well, if it's any consolation, I'm basically thinking of what I would do in such an event. It's an interesting psychological exercise.
Sure I'd miss friends and family, and maybe that's the way I would take the ending somehow, but I'm pretty sure I'd be OK for a while. The tricky part is in trying to objectively extrapolate what I would do, and how I would feel after the initial "party" is over, and the lights start going out.
The ending would have to be a self-revelation. I guess the over-arching premise can be boiled down to be careful what you wish for, though I would not explicitly state it.
The idea is appealing to me as a story because I have a feeling it's one of those things that everyone thinks about, but doesn't really talk about. The political response would be to admit that "man, I'd go crazy all by myself," and I'm sure there are a good deal of people for whom that would be accurate. But by saying "yeah, I'd probably be alright," you're risking the stigma of a "crazy person." What sane person would want that for themselves?
Maybe want is too strong a word, but suffice to say that, particularly in this day and age, there are those that would welcome relief from the day to day stress imposed by needing to find work, pay bills, "am I going to be able to afford to eat this week," etc., all things made easier by a lack of other people. No boss, no bill collectors, no one to answer to; who wouldn't want that?
I guess the problem with eliminating all people, is that you also eliminate society. As much as we hate paying the electric bill, without the people (who your bill helps pay) keeping that power plant going, pretty soon you won't have electricity at all. Now expand that analogy to include everything that society maintains, on which we as individuals rely everyday. There's your ending, somewhere.
Interesting.
I'd leave the actual problem of "where'd everybody go?" completely out, my one piece of magic. And I'd leave other people completely out.
Mine would essentially be the story of a guy who is probably failing at life, hates his job, and can't relate to other people; someone who'd welcome the prospect, relish in it for a while, but ultimately realize that the world was better with other people around.
I could come up with most of the first two acts, but I'm stuck on the third, and even then there would have to be some sort of pay-off that would need setting-up in the first two thirds.
