I saw what Chris wrote, but I don't doubt the sincerity from James either.  I....sorta...got to work on something that James worked on and two things emerged to be true.  A deep respect for womanhood, and a filthy, filthy sense of humor.  James posted something pretty beautiful on National Coming Out Day that I'm looking for right now.

I'm "friends," with James Gunn on Facebook, and he literally just posted the folllowing.

A couple of years ago I wrote a blog that was meant to be satirical and funny. In rereading it over the past day I don't think it's funny. The attempted humor in the blog does not represent my actual feelings. However, I can see where statements were poorly worded and offensive to many. I'm sorry and regret making them at all.

People who are familiar with me as evidenced by my Facebook page and other mediums know that I'm an outspoken proponent for the rights of the gay and lesbian community, women and anyone who feels disenfranchised, and it kills me that some other outsider like myself, despite his or her gender or sexuality, might feel hurt or attacked by something I said. We're all in the same camp, and I want to do my best to make this world a better place for all of us. I'm learning all the time. I promise to be more careful with my words in the future. And I will do my best to be funnier as well. Much love to all - James

Lamer, we all agree.  But TheGregbot 4000 believes he should just have it now for free and it's up to other people to figure out how people should get paid.  Maybe an hourly wage, he says.

Trey, the problem is TheGreg doesn't feel you MADE anything at all.  It's just Data, man.

With all this said, I would love to read a movie review by TheGreg.

"This batch of information that took roughly 2 hours and 13 minutes in earth time to download from the screen images onto my brain drive.  While no crashes occurred, I did not find my emotional receptors adequately pleased.  In fact, at roughly 01;03;22 of the informations download process I reali01100010100101010111010010101010"

TheGreg during a date.

"Greetings Mobile Flesh Data Receptor.  I understand we must consume large amounts of data during the "dinner" we had planned.  I hope you will inform me of all the data you acquired during your "day," and that I will acquire the necessary data to earn a goodnight sample study of the data on your cheek flesh."

TheGreg at a family reunion

"Which members of same flesh are expired and non operational?  This is the only Data I require."

The Greg's Lawyer, while TheGreg is on trial.

"Well, that's the question you have to answer. Your Honour, the courtroom is a crucible. In it we burn away irrelevancies until we are left with a pure product, the truth for all time. Now, sooner or later, this man or others like him will succeed in replicating TheGreg. And the decision you reach here today will determine how we will regard this creation of our genius. It will reveal the kind of a people we are, what he is destined to be. It will reach far beyond this courtroom and this one Greg. It could significantly redefine the boundaries of personal liberty and freedom, expanding them for some, savagely curtailing them for others. Are you prepared to condemn him and all who come after him to servitude and slavery? Your Honour, Starfleet was founded to seek out new life. Well, there it sits. Waiting. You wanted a chance to make law. Well, here it is. Make a good one."

Not at all.  Your body is water and flesh, but you are more than that.  An MP3 is absolutely a computer filed with data coded a certain way to be stored as information on a hard drive, but if that's all you see, buddy, I pity you.

But again, I think the kernel here that we can all zero in on, is the Greg champions the free exchange of information whereas I think the rest of us do not categorize movies, music, etc as information.  This is what I was trying to get at.  Lincoln is a great movie based in truth, but it is not information.  It's media, it's art, it's cinema, it's entertainment, yes.  But Information?  That's a bit reductive, no?

I have a feeling Feudal Lords made that argument about food to peasant farmers.

Right, but we're not talking about life sustaining food which everyone needs, and in my opinion, is a human right.  We're talking about entertainment which people want, and come to an agreement under a social contract to reward goods and services.

I would like to say Greg, that in all of your critiques of the current model, you have very few specifics of exactly how a new model would sustain it.

"I'm sure creative people will find a way to make good content pay for itself - they always have, even before copyright."

There's a lot of this hopeful language in your parts and very few sustainable solutions.  How would financing major feature films work, exactly?  You can poo poo the current version all you want, and there's much to poo poo.  But just like the Nielson's, it's the best option for now that allows most creators and most consumers to walk away happy.

"Well, I simply don't agree. Ultimately I don't know that there is a way to settle that. It seems obvious to me that Ian McKellen reading a book is a very different idea from a film adaptation."

But if I film Ian McKellan reading a book...it's still a a film.  So is the actual film of "The Hobbit."  The story being presented is the same, the presentation, the Artistry if you will, is what you're paying for.  A specific set of values being added to it.

768

(261 replies, posted in Episodes)

Nope, it's the same IDEA.  What is different is the VALUE ADDED to that idea.  THAT is what you are paying for.  You're paying for Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens to condense (although apparently not by much) a novel into three movies on page form.  Then you're paying for the actors to add something to the roles, you're paying all of New Zealand to add some part of it.

So you get an hourly rate for your work.  Who then, pays the hourly rate for all those people I just listed.

Of course they are. They are fundamentally information.

Have you ever, like, MADE anything?

Okay.  So If you bought a ticket to go see....I dunno, The Hobbit.  And it was an image of a white cyc and Ian Mckellan comes out to a chair, and reads The Hobbit to you, and then your buddy comes out of a different theater and says he just saw The Hobbit, but it was the actual movie that we know is coming out, would you feel cheated?  It's lieterally THE SAME IDEA.

People are still buying her merch.  Her sales haven't dropped at all, and by her own admission it's a tiny, tiny number of people who do it.

So I ask you again to articulate a defense for her (I already know why I'm against it).  If no one is harmed, if her sales aren't impeded, and if people who admire her work and can't afford one of her products but a cheaper version as well....why should she vigourously prevent people from doing that?

771

(261 replies, posted in Episodes)

But why should you care that someone is doing that?  Mel still makes a living.  No one is harmed, right?

Here's the net negative.  If enough people like something enough to want it, but not to contribute to it, then the person or people making it cannot continue to sustainably make anything.  If John goes into the red on this project to the point where he can no longer support himself by doing these projects, then we get no more movies by John Hudgeons.    That may not matter to you.  In fact, I'm pretty sure it doesn't.

This is back to whether buggy-whip manufacturers can make money in the current technological age. Maybe they can find a way, maybe not, but someone with a product to market has to figure out how to make a living despite there not being as many horse drawn carriages on the road. I can't put the genie back in the bottle for you, or make it 1950 again for you.

No...that's not the argument.  There ARE in fact people who make Horse Buggies and sell them.

http://www.horseloverz.com/Whips/478603 … -Whip.html

It may be a niche market, but it's still a MARKET.  If people want to buy horse buggies, they can, and they are compensated for them.  At no point do people say, "Eh, this thing isn't really used that much anymore, so it should just be free.  Right Vinnie?"

Let me give you another example, and I'd love to get your opinion on this Greg.  My friend, the supremely awesome Melita Curphy owns a website called missmosnter.com

There, she sells clothing, accessories, dolls, statues, and other art of hers that you can purchase.  This is her profession.  SHe does no other job for a living.  She is one of the busiest people I know.  Part of the reason she is busy is because a good chuck of her time is spent busting people on deviantart, cafe press, and zazzle who take her images off her website, and see merch of it on coffee mugs and shirts.

Now, under your logic.....all anyone is doing is taking an image that is digital and doing something with it.  So it's ok, right?  If you think not, I'd like to hear why.

Oh, there's plenty of good there.  Great performances, good stories, amazing score, and lots of beauty shots of my old home.  The frusration with Lost is largely that it got key things wrong, not that it didn't do enough right.
