It helps that Floyd wrote ALBUMS, not songs, so fits a topic like this smile The Roger Waters solo stuff is also great (and I literally yelled at my computer in despair when I read the second one, Radio KAOS, was to be a double album before the studio made him cut it down. That so needs the extra songs to flesh out the concept)

You get the same type of embargo with movies. In the future, if the game industry goes farther in that direction, reviewers won't be sent copies of probable duds but will be forced to buy them and then write their reviews. Game buyers will just have to learn NOT to pre-order these games. It's the fact the companies know they can get all the money up front that's the problem.

I'm too lazy to link to Youtube videos, but here's some of my favorites:

The Wake of Magellan by Savatage. before the group morphed into Trans Siberian Orchestra, Savatage did some great concept albums. This one could easily swap places with Dead Winter Dead.

Selling England By The Pound by Genesis.

Duke by Genesis. Depending on my mood, you could swap in Wind and Wuthering as far as what's the best of the Phil Collins era.

Haunted by Poe. She only did two albums that I can see, but this tribute to her late father is incredible.

The 13th Floor by Sirenia. Narrowing it down to one particular album from this group is hard, but I find myself going back to this one again and again.

"we go over cracks, we marvel at the subtle beauty"

I think we have the reviewer quote to go on the poster for this episode.

This is an interesting example of culture clash, really. A big budget US movie where a female character DOES have her gender become an issue would probably be laughed at, or at least be considered old fashioned. Similarly, a movie about women in the US military might be laughed at in nations like Israel, where women have served in combat for years.

Without even watching it, I'm reminded of my reaction to reading "Guns, Germs, and Steel". I'm sure it wasn't the author's intent, or view, but I came away thinking, "OK, so every other culture was better than Europeans, but lost because of X".

That's one of those posters where I want to ask the artist, "have you actually seen the movie?"

There's no reason why they would have seen the movie. Just as the cover art for books is often done by someone who just has a synopsis, so movie poster art (especially back then) is probably based on a few publicity stills.

The Mac App Store gives you a program that is a self contained entity, at least. You never have to connect to the net again to prove you own it.

IOS programers actually do keep shoveling new content into their games, extending their lives. I'm not sure if the end of the old software model is a good, or bad thing. We'll have to see. The idea of programs only being updated when there's a real reason to update them is appealing. Apple has been tweaking their Pages word processor with updates every year, but still have it listed as the 2009 version. I can't see where holding it all back for a new 2012 release would have been better. I do predict we'll see the end of using years in product names for this reason smile

I do agree. I thought, when it first happened, that STEAM selling Mac games would be great. After all, we had been ignored for years, and now the floodgates would open. Now I'll pay more for a non-Steam version of a game, only using the service if I want to play a Valve game. Dragon Age 2 as well, apart from the problems with the game itself, was incredibly annoying with its demand you sign in online. I was already ignoring Sims 3, and if Sim City is online only that's another franchise that's losing a customer.

As for old online games being unplayable now, I don't have a problem with a game having a limited lifespan. There are old play by mail games I doubt the old address are still valid for smile

"that system has a sun" was what lost me. There was no coming back after that.

I recently discovered the 1978 Japanese film Message from Space, in which the aliens discover that Earth is in "The Solar System". A very enjoyable film smile

Here's the question: Was the 70's cartoon more serious than this version?

But I would ask why is it that the US audience cannot handle foreign films? How come this big market of 50 countries grouped together ignores 'foreign' movies more or less (read: more unless they are in english)?

Probably because enough domestic films were produced there was no need. We also either got the low end, badly dubbed Italian or Japanese films, or the highbrow art movies. None of the middle of the spectrum stuff that would appeal to most people.

Somebody decided to put Buffalo Wild Wings here in Buffalo. Needless to say, any place that calls them "Buffalo Wings" isn't serving real wings smile

It does seem like a live action anime, but without the teen angst or half naked teen girls (there was one show where the mech got more powerful as the two teens inside got aroused).

Man, watching Brave is like a guy showing off his gun collection, but then finding out he doesn't own any ammo. Sure, it's cool and all, but none of it actually does anything despite it's huge potential. And when you express this fact, he takes out some shitty squirt guns for you. You know, the kind made out of cheap clear plastic and the whole inside of the gun is the water reservoir and the cap doesn't stay on tight so it leaks all over your hand and it's small and awkward to hold in your hand and the trigger tends to catch and hurts your finger after a bit and it only shoots 4 feet anyway? Yeah...

And meanwhile the guy's wife is standing there going, "I invited her over to go over some recipes. Put the damned guns away, Hank."

Has anyone listened to the DVD commentary? I'd love to know if they actually go into who was responsible for what.

I guess people just really wanted a stupid violent kill-them-all action movie, which has been done to fucking death, and would never top Where Eagles Dare anyway.

This is a bit similar to why I liked Brave. Teen girl teaches parents she should be free to act strong has been done to death. Teen girl learns Mom is right on most things, and there are different types of strength... not so much.

You have to admit, the idea of people working in media expecting to get paid is rather old school. Sell t-shirts or something smile

Why do I suspect that they actually gave away the entire story?

Same here. I still watch/listen to it all the time.

It's actually an Atheist musical. I mean, take a look at it: Jesus at no time performs a miracle. Judas is shown at having a legitimate point, especially when you consider that 30 years later the Jews DID rise up, and Rome destroyed the temple. You'll often see productions done in a religious way (I saw a touring version that had demons tempting Judas during his opening song), but that's not what Tim Rice had in mind.

Bible scholar Robert Price has a book where he considers JSC as an actual Gospel, which at some point I'll have to get.

I think my first viewing is going to be of the old animated version. Came out when I was in 4th or 5th grade, and is still damned fun smile

Although, even then, not all women have the same view of what a female character should be. Remove the names from the stories, and often you will guess the wrong gender going both ways.
