Oh man, Dragonslayer. Now there's a movie worth commentary-ing.
*puts it on 'curated' wishlist*
I proclaim the last 60 seconds of this episode to be The Best Outro We Have Ever Done.
/diminished
Hobbit is the new Sith
But, on the other hand - yay for Bill Corso getting a makeup nom. There's a surprising amount of love for Foxcatcher across the board, a lot more than I would have expected.
I imagine most people could.
Side note: I don't think this has ever been done for VFX (yet) but Makeup Artist Magazine has put all the makeup bakeoff presentation reels online, with commentary from the potential nominees. Worth checking out to see how much makeup work there can be even in movies that don't have aliens and monsters.
More like "this movie has validated all the reasons I feel bad so I feel good about that". It's somewhere between the most cynical movie of the year and the deepest-black comedy of the year. Or at least I choose to read it that way.
It's a perfect vehicle for Fincher's sensibilities, but never gets as grim as Se7en or Dragon Tattoo. Thumbs way up.
Update: Finally saw Gone Girl last night. Now one of my top five movies of the year, might even be my fave.
Wow. I agree with (almost) every point. We should hang out.
None of which is to say that I wasn't entertained by the whole thing - I absolutely was. As you say, the bar was set so high with the first trilogy that we tend to take all the stuff that's still awesome for granted.
Hobbit 3 didn't blow my mind, but it was fun and had numerous great moments and what the heck, that's all I really ask of a movie.
This is one of the ways the prequels made the OT make less sense. The OT suggests that Jedi were rare, mysterious, even just a myth to some people (Han Solo, for one). Then the prequels declared that just 20 years earlier they were like the UN - there were hundreds of them getting up in everyone's bizness, and they even had an office building in the galaxy's equivalent of downtown. In that reality, light sabers wouldn't be much of a mystery either. Heck, you can still find a working Commodore 64 in our world, if you want one.
How about Edge of Tomorrow?
Yeah, this time of year Variety and Hollywood Reporter are worth flipping through, just to see the no-way-that's-gonna-happen "For Your Consideration" ads. They can get pretty hilarious.
There are those who claim it reads "Pull to inflate" but it's hard to decipher because it's upside down (for the pilot's benefit).
If that's true, then I applaud the level of detail of the world-building.
More or less my reaction:
The thing that puzzles me about that comic is the ship at right doesn't resemble any Star Wars vehicle that I can think of, but does look very much like an Eagle from Space 1999.
Speaking as a former kid who owned Eagles and Star Wars models simultaneously, I find this completely plausible.
Saw it at Universal Citywalk and didn't notice any particular issues with sound. I did notice a couple spots where the music was mixed much louder over dialog than usual but I assumed that was a choice, not a mistake.
The last scene of Defending Your Life. Every time. Godammit.
And if you've never seen or heard of that movie, then fair warning - it's a strong contender for my next curated movie. Get on it.
Well, nothing about it particularly needs "explanation" - the story itself is pretty straightforward, really. But the movie goes back and forth between reality and Keaton's inner life and thoughts - what's debatable is how much of what we see is actually happening.
The makers probably could answer that question definitively, but you can also make your own interpretation without "missing" anything.
Haven't seen the show myself, I'm mildly curious but haven't gotten 'round to it. But as soon as I heard about it, I assumed it would do well - Grimm and Hannibal have done well for NBC and Constantine looks to be somewhere on the same spectrum.
But nope. So far ratings are Grimm indeed, and unless things change very soon, Constantine's just gonna be a timeslot-filler until Hannibal comes back, and that'll be it. So if you like the show, get the word out now. Tho it's probably already too late.
Just got back. Enjoyed greatly. Not sure I'd call any aspect a "lock" for an award - too early in the season for that. But definitely a contender for directing, writing, cinematography, and multiple acting nominations. Go. Go now.
I liked it a lot, too - although I agree that if the resolution had had just a little more... something... I might have outright loved it.
On the other hand, I don't have any obvious fixes to offer - and certainly there were a lot of ways it could have ended that I would have hated. So kudos to the makers for not making any of those choices.
And yes, I also liked the lack of back story for the characters. Such as
Overall, thumbs up from me.
EDIT: And I'll be honest, I thought Shia nailed this one. The whole ensemble was good, but Shia was the standout for me.
It occurs to me that we have a rare opportunity here. What scenario should we have ready for when Mike wakes up?
I'm trying to decide between 28 Days Later and Planet of the Apes, but leaning toward the latter because getting ape masks probably will be easier than convincing the Cedars-Sinai staff to temporarily abandon the entire floor of the hospital.
These two sketches were from the same episode I was in - I remember watching both being shot while we waited to do ours.
Was hoping that whoever posted these would have also uploaded the vent dummy sketch, but apparently not.
Honestly, when I saw #michaelscottfund my first though was that Dorkman has started a charity of some sorts.
If I know the internet, conspiracy theorists claiming Mike is fine and this is a scam to fund a movie project should be presenting their "evidence" very soon.
"He talked about raising money in the podcast episode just before the 'accident'! Think it through, people!"
Yes, apparently Ralph Garman is a thing, or so I was told. I didn't have any scenes with him, and his character is on the "don't spoil this" list. Hence, not mentioned.
