An evening with Hamill... he's quite a nice guy
10 Cloverfield Lane
Nice little thriller scoring over 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. The less you know 'bout it the better. John Goodman never phones it in. First time director inverts the usual B-movie genre tropes before it 'goes to the mansion' - good for a discussion after everyone has seen it and it can't be spoiled.
is that much worse because it could have been great. We know what the writers and filmmakers are capable of. I hope it was studio meddling that savaged this film.
JJ's oeuvre is lukewarm. His last project, STID was below par. None of his movies have been stand-out classics. He's no game-changer. I don't know how he developed his ''wunderkind'' reputation. Good PR I suppose, but it's not backed up by his CV.
First of all, how does his OP not warrant one like? He's still alive-we should "like" that
Also, that sounds really crazy. Glad to hear you're doing ok, and that you are still kicking.
I guess the term 'like' is not synonymous with sympathy. it feels wrong to 'like' it when someone tells you bad news.
Although a thumbs-down symbol is not the right response either. A 'hang in there' or 'sympathy' or 'take as many with you as you can' button would be better.
On the Facebook page when Dorkman's family posted news of a setback in recovery, it seemed weird (to me anyway) that the (what sounded like) bad news generates dozens of 'likes'. But I know that they all mean well, it's just a weird way (to us oldies not used to this fandangled interweb thing the younglings are on) of expressing it.
Sorry to hear about your condition, man. Sounds like a real cunt of a thing to have too. I wish there was something we could do. I hope the doctors can make you better.
Crimson Peak - it's all production design. Victorian Gothic imagery cranked up to 11. Same ol' plot as dozens of other supernatural horror stories, and lamely executed at that. Not sure what the point was. But nice to look at. Graded to an inch of its life. If you like the lead, see her in Stoker - a better story.
For Space Nerds, the science of Star Wars Ep7 is scrutinized....
The one entitled Goodnight, Goodnight was that one for me
The Revenant - now that's a movie
And the Academy Award for Best Cinematography should be renamed The Chivo
I just thought that the force Mastery in her was too rushed
As Luke's daughter, her mitochlorian e-meter reading would be 11. Carrie on steroids.
For me, it may be a rehash of the best of the OT
A jukebox movie (analogous to jukebox broadway musicals) i.e. greatest hits of Episode 4. I can't help feeling that 80% of the box office is due to nostalgia value rather than the actual merits of the movie (were it the same story but not under the Star Wars "brand"), it'd earn a middling Oblivion/Elysium/Edge of Tomorrow return.
It is astonishing that the Prequels didn't seem to erode the goodwill in the Star Wars franchise, or if they did, all you need is 10 years and some air-clearing hype to restore the fan goodwill again. Bullet-proof IP. Terminator Genysis also tried to be a "jukebox movie" but failed terribly.
Will Episode 7 surpass Titanic? Looks like it. Does it deserve to? Not in my opinion.
Phasma bothered me. She shouldn't have been so willing to save her own life and cave in to the rebels. I would have been satisfied with at least some sort of tustle or just anything other than that of the old timey response of - 'you'll never get away with this' type of junk, whilst shaking fist.
And if you agree to lower the shields, you're only hastening your own demise anyway, so why would you comply? The logical thing to do would be to sound the alarm (pretend to lower the shields, but press the comms instead), or fight back and take as many with you, etc.
Phasma didn't bother me at all. I didn't pay much attention to the hype around characters and what not before seeing the movie, so I had no expectations for her.
She may as well have been "Idiot Stormtrooper #34"
Phasma should have been that stormtrooper that had that duel with Fin (using that weird rifle/sword hybrid weapon)
The trash compactor is the one thing we *know* will not kill whoever ends up inside of it. Just take that callback to a very logical extreme.
Also, if there's a caption contest for Luke, the Twitter account "Very Lonely Luke" has been playing it for a week straight. https://twitter.com/VeryLonelyLuke
That girl is staring at me
I'm still silent
I can't start talking now without it being awkward
I have to pretend I don't see her forever
I asked R2 to send me my kite surfer, not my light saber
Darth Praxus wrote:@BDA, just a minor point--Phasma isn't actually dead yet, Kennedy has confirmed she'll appear in VIII. So hopefully she'll take a level in badass then.
Which if true, sweet, I'll look forward to it. But according to every single bit of storytelling the movie was doing, Phasma was chucked into a trash compactor and is pretty assuredly dead. (Which dudes...I know she's a bit of a bitch...but gees that's harsh.)
"There a garbage chute around here?...trash compactor?"
"Yea there is. -smirk-"
Executing point blank is not very befitting of our heroes, but somehow executing by trash compacter is. Have they got time to fuck around finding one and activating it, given the Rebel Base is minutes from destruction? In any case, she's dead anyway as the whole base blew up. It's like Ripley taking time out to flame the Queen's eggs when the reactor is about to go critical.
Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in
Luke upon seeing Rey: So now I gotta pay child support?
Or... hold it perpendicular so it's not pointed at either of us.
Or Luke then slowly pulls out two red double-ended light sabers and gets ready to tango...
"Where we're going, we don't need light sabers"
Caption Competition...
This is a really nitty nitpick, but they held the final shots of Luke and Rey's encounter really long.
Look at cloak, look at Rey, look at cloak. Cloak turns!
Look at Luke, now back to Rey! Now back to luke! Now back to Rey!
Rey holds out saber! Now back to Luke! Now back to Rey!Now a flying shot of the the two of them with Rey awkwardly holding out the saber for an uncomfortable length of time!!!
I'm exaggerating, but it felt weird.

The thing about JJ is that he always does this. He likes to have mysterious shit happen in his stories and then hints that maybe the next installment is going to explain that shit or provide you with an answer. But then your odds of actually getting any answers are like 50/50. He might just forget or not bother. It's an issue I have with just about everything he and that Lindelhof hack have ever touched, though JJ isn't nearly as bad about it. JJ tends to over-explain shit that doesn't need it and vaguely hint at shit that's actually kind of important.
I feel like they'll cover this shit in the next movie, tho. She clearly has some kind of history that she either forgot (or repressed dur dur dur), or was just too young to really remember it all that well.
I agree, tho, that if you're making an adventure film for a general audience, your best bet is to keep the plots more or less self-contained and let the character's individual stories be the thread that you want to follow through the series.
Well, we finally got the live TV series that was mooted a few years ago. Except it's on the big screen.
Anyone know of anything worthwhile coming up in 2016?
Fuck Marvel and all the other superhero movies. And if you eliminate the other reboots, spin-offs, and franchise instalments (e.g. Bourne 5 FFS), there doesn't seem to be much left.

Anything else? Like, you know, someth'n original?
[Then again, Fury Road, was a franchise movie, and it turned out pretty bloody good]
