Rewatched Minority Report today. It's rocky in the first act, but the ideas are so fascinating that it makes up for any minor quibbles, and everything after the villain reveal just works like gangbusters. This one needs a WAYDM stat.

What happens when you take 26 horror directors and assign them a letter of the alphabet to base a short film around? You get a mostly shitty movie. There's one short that I genuinely loved ("Q is for Quack", in which Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett of You're Next fame deconstruct the concept of the film to great effect) but most of the rest are grotesque nonsense. Only a few of them manage any real shock, and when they do I ended up disgusted in the bad way. "L is for Libido" is genuinely one of the more sickening, disturbing things I've ever seen in a movie, but I wasn't impressed with the short because of that. I just felt ill. It wasn't bold or groundbreaking. It was just shock for the sake of being shocking. You could say the same about most of the shorts. I did like a few, though. "Q is for Quack", as mentioned. "C is for Cycle" is confused but kind of clever. "J is for Jidai-geki (Samurai Movie)" is probably the funniest short. It's like an R-rated Spongebob episode. If you see it, you'll know what I mean. "N is for Nuptials" features a joke as old as time (or at least as old as parrots) but the short is so quick and unapologetic about itself that I thought it worked. "O is for Orgasm" is really interesting visually, but I'm not sure it has any place in this film. But then you get shorts like "F is for Fart," which is at least a trainwreck in an interesting way. I can't say the same for "I is for Ingrown," which was baffling and made absolutely zero sense. "M is for Miscarriage" is so bad that there's basically nothing to say about it. The reveal at the end is played as horrific, but I sat there and though, "Oh, yeah. Okay. I guess I'm supposed to be shocked here." It's another strike on Ti West's filmography for me. I have yet to like a single thing the guy makes, but he has this reputation as a great horror director. I don't get it. "R is for Removed" features a style of filmmaking that I really detest. It's basically a series of pretentiously-shot sequences that don't actually add up to anything, even though they're presented as "dramatic" and "intriguing." It's really lazy filmmaking. Speaking of which, "W for WTF?" is the laziest short of the bunch, and I'm surprised that the producers even let this one in the film. It starts in the same place that "Q is for Quack" does, but it takes it in a mind-numbingly dense direction. And then we close with "Z is for Zetsumetsu (Extinction)" which nicely sums up what The ABCs of Death is as a whole. Vulgar, gory, gross, "shocking," loud, and dumb. It's too bad that only a few segments lived up to the potential of the concept. Maybe they'll get some better directors for the sequel.

Hey, Eddie's friend is doing an AMA right now. What a coincidence.

THe big bald motherfucker in Jack's crew is my old training partner/guy who used to choke the hell out of me, Tait Fletcher.  In addition to all his stunt work (He was in the Avengers too) he owns a CrossFit box and manages 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu: Sante Fe.  He coached last seasons THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER winner Kevin Gastellum.  On top of that, he's a hell of a guy.

Not sure if this is the same guy, but apparently there was one actor who auditioned for the show more than any other actor, and they finally found a role for him in Jack's crew. He even got a few lines.

So I rewatched the pilot the other day, to see where this ride started. Does anyone recall what happened to the video tape walt records in the first few seconds? Where he tells his family he loves them and whatnot. If nothing was done to that in the series (I can't remember) I bet Skyler will find it after Walt is dead in Trey's explosion, or something?

However, the flash forward is very puzzeling to me.

He destroys the tape a few episodes later.

Here's a fun twist: Alex Billington has previously been in movie blog news for live-tweeting during a theatrical screening of CRANK 2.

If I'm reading this correctly, this guy was joining a bunch of comedians who were ALSO live tweeting during the entire show, and the only reason it's such a world ending travesty that Alex was doing it is because he's a film critic not a comedian? So they proceed to single this guy out and tear him to SHREDS, but not even a single word for the comedians who were also live tweeting through the entire thing??

Um....WTF???

He's a film blogger. He represents the rest of us, so he should know better. Alex Billington is a child. There was also the time he tried to blackmail Universal into inviting him to a secret Scott Pilgrim screening by threatening to reveal when and where it was taking place.

It's unclear. It would be hilarious if he did, though. He did mention in a tweet that he had to leave the film early, so either he left to make the call or he was forced to leave after making it. He did go to TIFF administrators after he called, and they said that it's in their rules that you have the right to use your phone in a screening.

And in this case, I get that. A major part of any film festival is getting people to buy your movie, so if a buyer wants to be texting his employers about the movie they're planning on getting the rights to, too bad for the blogger who just wanted an early pass to a screening.

Okay, this whole issue just leveled up big time. Alex Billington, blogger for firstshowing.net, CALLED 911 on a dude who was on his phone in a TIFF screening today. And he's super-serious about this too. He's on Twitter and Facebook acting like he's some kind of hero for "elevating the issue" of movie texters. He's saying that change wasn't going to come until someone took the issue as seriously as he did. He's acting like a martyr for the cause.

Fuck Alex Billington. He makes all of us look like lunatics with no sense of humor about ourselves. He's not only dragging down public perception of film buffs/critics, he's forever sullied the reputations of every internet journalist looking for a press pass to a film festival, especially TIFF. He's pathetic, and I hope he's banned from future film events for this reckless, inappropriate behavior. Fuck. Alex. Billington.

Actually, if you look at some screencaps, only a few of the Nazis had a clear shot at Hank, and he was pretty close to cover. It's not inconceivable that he made it out without getting hit. Gomie, on the other hand, was directly in the line of sight for AA12-guy. He's fucked.

That's not inconceivable. My friend caught up on Netflix in early 2012 and he thought that the season 4 finale was the last episode. And it could be, had they decided to end it there.

There was a scene a few episodes back where that night came up - I think it was when Walt was talking about the irony of meeting Jane's dad in the bar - and I thought Walt might slip and say the wrong thing and Jesse would figure it out.   It's still a possibility, I think.

The other option, like you say, is that Walt just tells Jesse about it for some reason - maybe in a moment of anger or to rattle him, who knows.

I'm not completely sure they'll do anything with it, but it's a pretty big bomb to leave unexploded.  smile

And it's the LAST bomb, remember. Jesse's figured out pretty much everything else Walt did. He has no way of knowing that he was there the night Jane died, though. There's no way it doesn't come out when they go head-to-head (probably next episode).

I love that idea. You could spend 4 hours talking about trailers. There's so much to cover.

If he came out of early retirement for this, I've lost all faith in humanity.

I don't think he'd retired yet when they were shooting this. Hopefully he'll end his career on a more dignified note.

But seriously, the final segment of "Reincarnation" might be the funniest thing that Futurama ever did.

I guess I never got the British humor gene. Except in literature. I think that dry sensibility really works on the page. On TV it flops for me.

Agh. I was writing a whole post but my browser refreshed and it got deleted, so here's the tl;dr.

US Office is funnier and all-around better than UK Office ever was. Parks and Rec is better than both of them.

Late-period Futurama is in a lot of ways better that the original Fox run, and episodes like "The Late Philip J. Fry" and "Lethal Inspection" carry a lot more emotional heft than "Jurassic Bark" or the one with Fry's lucky clover.

Archer and Bob's Burgers are brilliant. Bob's Burgers especially in how it captures its central family. Each character is so unique, and yet you can totally see how they developed in the world of the show. You can see which aspects of the kids' personalities they took from their parents. And it's just a sweet show that never resorts to cheesy messages or morals to wrap stories around. Also, the musical numbers. "Electric Love" from season 3 is just indescribably good.

Listening now. Patiently awaiting mention of Archer or Bob's Burgers, aka the best comedies on TV right now. Will report back later with my findings.

Yup.

You're right. But I guess we'll see how this goes. Studios have major blockbusters planned for the next six years or so. Let's check back in 2020 and see where the movie industry is.

Vince Gilligan said that a future Blu-Ray release will have both Walt and Jesse's tapes in full.

I think I might re-read House of Leaves. It's been a while, but I was totally engrossed last time.

Was there some clue with the SD card? Hank was out on the balcony with his mate, leaving Pinkman alone with the video camera. Where's the SD card? Hank looks at the camera and says we'll need another SD card. Dunno... might be a red herring.

I think the idea was that Jesse had just been talking long enough to fill up a card, and so to continue getting Jesse's statement they'd need another.

If the SD card had been missing from the camera entirely there would probably have been a bigger reaction from Hank.

That's probably right. I'm most likely reading too much into it. It's just that BB has such sparse dialogue, everything could be significant. Also, during the same scene, Pinkman asked to go to the bathroom. Coincidence? Why mention it if it didn't 'mean' something? If Pinkman did swipe the SD card, that'd be a good time to flush it or 'hide' it. You never saw Hank take out the SD card, only put in another one. Maybe the writers insert little ambiguities here and there so they can use them in future episodes if they need to.

But would they have set up all the events leading to Jesse's confession only to throw it out that easily? I'm not sure. But that tape will be a major player going forward.

Just to be clear - I agree with the Doctor's review as far as content, just not as vehemently.   And even with all that, Elysium is still FAR better than ST:ID.

What he said. Oblivion, Stoker, Elysium - 2013 is the battle of the 6/10 movies. We'll settle for anything that keeps us amused for more than 10 minutes.

Will we though? None of those movies did well at the box office.

Yes, I'm expecting the pace to really pick up now, as there's so many loose ends to tie up.

Is the mountain of cash going to be remain buried in the ground, seeing that Walt hit his head on the bathroom floor immediately after burying it?

Final episode: Walt is rotting in jail, everyone he loves is dead, and the lottery ticket that he bought with the coordinates of the money ends up winning him millions of dollars.
