By any reasonable standard? Sorry, that's extremely... short-sighted. It undermines the scale of good and bad when you declare a film like Riddick to be a bad movie. There are many, much more genuinely bad movies out there. Let's not dilute the meaning and power of these words by flinging them about so thoughtlessly. What the hell happened to average and all those other words we use to describe things that aren't at either end of the scale?

Figures, I love Shoot Em Up but am kinda meh on Hot Fuzz. How can a skydiving gun fight played against AC/DC's 'If you want blood' be boring? Plus, Monica Bellucci.

I think alot of the contention stems from the design of necromongers, as in that medieval-styled armour they appear they've stepped out of the pages of another universe (which is why references to LOTR came popping up). I'd argue that had these guys been dressed in a more grounded Stormtroopers/futuristic style armour, their sections of the film would have fitted more seamless with the Pitch Black universe. Thus the tone difference between the two films wouldn't been so jarring.

I'm often surprised at editing mistakes, from putting characters in suspended animation for a few minutes in a multi-thread story (Transformers climax), repeating a motion across shots (ROTK has a bit where the same rider starts his move in 3 shots!), head 'bobbing' on reverse shots that are out of sync with the audio (FOTR and others), or coming into the shot too early (Saving Private Ryan has an awful moment in its climax when a german gun opens up on some sfx dummies atop a tank).

There are some scenes in 13th Warrior which seem abrupt or truncated, a subplot about the King's son evaporates into thin air the moment the monsters turn up; so happens there's a much longer cut out there. The theatrical cut of Kingdom of Heaven also feels like it's missing parts.

Sorry to hear that Teague, that must be quite frustrating. Well, the silver lining is that I missed the last one and would like to have participated in the chat for it and watched it live. Maybe you're doing it... for me? smile

I've watched V but only got half the experience. My hearing's not great and I rely on lip-reading a lot, so you can imagine I didn't have a clue what V was saying most of the time as he wears a mask. I was in a room with a bunch of people when I saw it too, so no subtitles. I confess I haven't been bothered to watch it again.

You're recording Strange Days again or is it just being released?

One that comes to mind immediately is The Last Emperor; a beautiful, haunting film about Pu Yi, who becomes the Emperor of China at 3 years old and spends his whole life at the whim and power of others as he goes through the turbulence of 20th century China. It's a really tragic tale and the emperor is a great character, flawed but sympathetic. It's the first film I saw where I found myself really affected on an emotional level long after the credits rolled. Completely unforgettable in my mind.

Another is American History X, where it's raw brutality shocked me and I became aware of just how powerful the medium could be.

And totally agree about Dark Crystal. This is an amazing film unlike any other.

I'm not convinced about some of the character arcs on this page. I thought Zarban should have at least waited until the third page before releasing the kraken and Teague's betrayal sort of didn't make sense.

This is starting to get really good now that we are getting to the good stuff!

Clucking bell, this is awful reporting. Well done New York Post, you mistook "already shot" with "already written" even when you then explain that ...the series is awaiting the development of "a different type of technology we can use so it's economically feasible to shoot the shows."

I watched this years ago and didn't much like it. I just didn't find it that funny (except Geoffrey Rush's villain I think). So... now I'm torn over whether I should watch it again before listening to the commentary or just go ahead regardless.

Well that was painful. I can't believe this cost almost $70 million. The only joke I remember smiling at was the Superman/Clark Kent gag with "That doesn't make any sense, he wouldn't be able to see!" The problem I have with it, aside from the crude and predictable nature of almost every joke, is that neither the characters or the world they inhabit seem remotely plausible. Most of the actors ham it up to the point where you can see they're trying to be funny, Stiller in particular is desperate, and all of it's utterly childish rather than witty.

Sheena - Queen of the Jungle. Loved this movie growing up and I adored Tanya Roberts(my first love!). I don't want to watch it now as I will probably realise it's shite. I've seen Beastmaster recently and that turned out to be a turd that can't be polished. Actually there have been quite a few movies that under the cold light of adulthood haven't measured up to my memories.... Firefox wasn't nearly as awesome as I remembered.

I won't watch Emerald Forest either, a slightly more serious male version of Sheena as it turns out. What is it about child me and jungle stories?

I confess to being a bit meh on the opening. It's ok but I've been skipping it these last few episodes. I think HBO have done some far better openings - Deadwood and Band of Brothers are the two that come to mind. Ok, so Deadwood did have that side boob.

Don't know whether this has been suggested before, but how about doing Stargate?

I loved this movie when it came out and just watched it the other day - I think it holds up well. Great set design and special effects, an interesting story (twist on the chariots of the gods concept) and some great performances from Spader and Russell. Sold?

Next step is to build the engines - they're going to be testing the pre-cooler technology in the summer.

I'm a big fan of A Song of Ice and Fire, been waiting a long time for the new book (finally coming out this July). The books are just amazing, really gripping stuff with emotional highs and lows like you wouldn't believe. One moment you're punching the air and almost letting out a woop, the next you're feeling sick to your stomach in disbelief at what's happened, then later you might discover that you're gritting your teeth as you seethe with anger, and every now and then you just laugh at some clever joke or the sheer balls of a character or feel a profound sorrow as you hear a tragic tale being told.

I'm liking the TV show so far. It's not comparable to the books (it never is) but it's also not quite 'best TV show ever'. Maybe that will change as we get further into the season (watched 5 episodes only) or onto the next season (when things really get going).

And the inverse is also true - a good story is created by its characters.  If  the story is just a series of events that happen to them, they'll be passive and uninteresting.

But that's sort of what I'm getting at, it's the cart before the horse. How characters respond to the series of events is what allows character to manifest. You can't really have a good or interesting character in a vaccum. A superhero with no obstacles and with no one to interact with is a dull character no matter how much self-reflection and brooding he does. That series of events happening to the character, each eliciting either a physical or emotional response, allows the character to come alive. Aliens is a great example of this, all the great character stuff derives from plot developments. The alien threat is an overall external factor to be sure, but along the way there are numerous specific events that allow Ripley, Burke and  the marines to demonstrate who they are; the marines' defeat in the hive, Gorman's KO, the dropship crash, the immiment reactor meltdown, Burke's betrayal, Newt's kidnap. Without these, none of the characters would emerge.

I think we agree with each other here, story and character are inseparable, just that I would define one character interacting with another as story (because that interaction has to be constructed and take place somewhere and at sometime) and emphasise that character is demonstrated through action and reaction.

Personally I find Jack Sparrow overrated. It was interesting when he was this oddball side character, the funny man to the straight Norrington, Turner and Elizabeth triumvirate,  and it was fresh,  but then the next two films (not seen the 4th yet) overplay the card and Depp ends up playing almost a parody of Sparrow.

I don't think it's story vs characters, in my mind, to have a good story means to have characters that we care about doing things that we care about. An engaging, 'real' character is one that serves and gives meaning and/or relevance to a story. And the story is what drives and develops the character. Personally,  I don't believe you can get a good character without a story there to provoke (re)action.

I'd suppose a theme is "be careful what you wish for". Will seems to have that 'Luke stuck on a farm' yearning to be more than he is, and Elizabeth really wants to meet these pirates of her supposed fantasy - but both find themselves on this dangerous adventure instead. The pirates meanwhile all want to be mortal and of course end up being killed by their enemies.

Of course, it's not quite on the same level as Labrynth. That's the thing about themes, search hard enough and you'll find one.

I've not filled my irritating question quota for the week, so are you guys planning to do the X-Men Trilogy anytime soon? With a new movie coming soon, it'd be an interesting time to discuss them. What did they get right? What could they have done better? The series' inconsistency might make for a good DiF discussion.

Really cool. Glad to see it went up without any further problems.

NASAtv is currently showing the first of the four spacewalks. The audio is fascinating to listen in on. Also, I'm struck by just how dark it becomes when night falls. One tends to think of space as being constant, but in orbit folks experience day and night too.

Remake the prequels? No way. We're far more likely to see the original trilogy remade. You can tell that Lucas is just itching to do it. He's clearly a person that's not happy with those films. I'll put money down that the bluray versions coming this autumn will see more unnecessary changes.

I wouldn't agree that you can only have Iron Man vs big suit or Iron Man vs many suits. There's a story in the comics where Iron Man causes a plane to crash and finds himself at odds with the US government (and military). With this kind of story, you have a powerful adversary that Iron Man can't just punch or blow up since he'd be hurting fellow patriots, as well as an adversary that undercuts Tony Stark since his company and resources are under attack.

The second movie sort of sets this up in the sense that the government are starting to lose patience with Stark (that senator in particular). I really hope the third movie goes this route.

This would also be an opportunity to further establish SHIELD - their tech, their structure etc.

Great review. Completely agree. I remember sitting in the cinema and thinking at about the half way mark "where the hell is this going?" There are just too many subplots going on. The villain, Vanko, is absent for such long stretches that I genuinely forgot about him at one point amongst all the Stark-Potts-Rhodes stuff.
