Trey is very adept at grabbing all thoughts that circle around in the ether, that neither Dorkman nor I stated, and encapsulates them in a kickass way. Great summary.
The key word there is "intentions." The best shows I have loved exceeded their intentions. I started watching Buffy because I was ok with the premise of a chick fighting vampires with Karate. But it wasn't until the course of several seasons that you really got the most of the ever changing relationships, show dynamics, and set pieces that all sprout from their evolving intentions over time that I REALLY enjoyed it. Sometimes it doesn't work, like with Dollhouse. Sometimes the inverse is true, like with Lost. Thus is the nature with any kind of serialized story telling. Everyone's threshld is different, as are the preferences we possess that allow us to tolerate some of more and less of others. But honestly, I'm glad that I've had friends who have told me to shut up, take my medicine, and stick with a thing because it does indeed pay off sometimes.
None of the shows I have loved got me with the first episode. The American Office took until the second season to hook me, same with Buffy. Firefly I watched two episodes, and didn't watch a frame of it until 3 YEARS later when I decided to give it another chance. I'm in the middle of a similar thing with The Wire. I watched the first two episodes when they premiered...and that's it. Now that i have an HBO Go account I intend to give it another run.
My point is is that we are rarely in the right place or time for something. Sometimes, the problem is actually with us. Sometimes the problem is with the "us," of this very second. I loved Oz when it was first on. Easily my favorite show...of 1999. Now I watch it knowing that if I were discovering it for the first time, I'd find it a bit schlocky. Yes, the Teague of today prefers Carnivale to Game of Thrones. Fine. But Teague is nowhere near a permanent state, so don't take your reaction today for your reaction always.
GoT does start to a bit of a slow burn, but trust me when I saw you'll want to stick with it just to see how much horrible shit can be thrown at good people. In a way, its the inverse of Carnivale. Carnivale's best episodes were front loaded, while GoT's are certainly 6-10.
Whatever that was, Squiggly, I want to punch it.
I met April through my best friend Sean, whom she is a big fan of. We all had dinner with the rest of the Cracked.com crew at some Bratwurst place in Downtown. She is an absolute sweetheart, and very down to earth. She is also tiny. She's a nerdy girl, late bloomer who happened to become retardedly hot and is not shy about her body, nor her profession. With that said, most of her free time is spent playing xbox, watching Dr. Who, listening to Dubstep, and taking baths. We met up at Comic Con a few times, where she cosplayed as...April O'neil, with the yellow jumpsuit, red wig, and TMNT backpack. She ditched thecostume though because her shoes were falling apart.
Long story short, she's every guy here's dream girl, with the possible exception of the banging dudes for money part.
And as the 6 degress of DiFeration continues, my friend, the lovely Miss April O'Neil stars in the actual Star Trek porn parody as Counselor Troy. And as any 5 second glance at her tumblr will tell you, she is a HUGE nerd. Like, she takes nude photos of herself in the bath covered only by her Dalek, nerd.
To clarify, I do not seek out bad movies, nor are all awful movies made the same. I do think that certainfilms have a charm to them that's blended in with their incompetence that can be riveting to watch at times.
I survived my live tweet of it (twitter.com/luckybestwash) and man, it was certainly a thing that happened at my face.
I enjoy bad movies because even making a bad movie requires a ton of fucking work. Exhausting work, at times. SO anytime somebody makes something that is undisputedly bad, not just a matter of taste or opinion, but just poor choices at every step, I find it rather endearing. Because to work so so hard at making something that clearly bad, it requires a level of self delusion that I find fascinating. I enjoy it because I see a bad movie as a guided tour of the makers psyche. And when you're as crazy as James Nguyen, it's an even better ride than anything at Six Flags.
It's a half prequel, but Godfather 2 comes to mind.
Actually....just realized what my favorite biopic of all time is
24 Hour Party People.
Discuss.
I am partial to Patton myself.
Not al of Fincher's movies hit with me, but when they do, it hits hard. I actually really like Zodiac, and I think its a better film than people give it credit for. I can't wait for GWTDT, only because I think it cant be any worse than the sweedish versions. I love the book, and already FIncher's trailer makes me think he got it more than his european counterparts.
Im on record as saying Brick was one of my favorite movies of the 2000's, and Teague fuckign HATES it for reasons I've never fully understood. In my mind, that's prime DiF material. Haven't seen Winter's Bone, but I've been meaning to check it out.
Huh. Quoting:
"-- Daniel writes: On the third day of Comic Con (Saturday), there was a panel for the upcoming follow-up series to the popular Nickelodeon animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender. The series is called The Last Airbender: The Legend of Korra, which takes place roughly seventy years since the events of the first series. As the series will see expansions in various forms of martial arts, the show's creators have sought to incorporate references to different styles. Among them is mixed martial arts, which will be used as a basis to a form of a similar sport in the series called Pro Bending. The creators called upon Ultimate Fighter 6 winner and current UFC fighter Mac Danzig to provide reference demonstration. Danzig brought in recent Strikeforce fighter Jeremy Umphries to help out and both showcased their abilities in a reference video that was shown during the panel. No airdate has been announced yet for The Legend of Korra, though it is deep into production that a trailer premiered at the panel."
Iactually know Mac. He used to train at Legends MMA around the same time I did. I tend to get pissy when people reference MMA as a style unto itself, but Mac is a smart dude and I have confidence that his Jiu Jitsu will translate well. I don't know Umphries personally, but have heard very good things.
Waiting, just waiting, for Dorkman's pov.
I'll be there as always.s
Hmm, I buy it. He's got the look of Davos down. So far, I'm pleased with what Im hearing of season 2. The part of Lithuania they want to use for Storm's End is nothing short of breathtaking.
I will be drinking at either the Tin Fish or The Field on k street. Seriously, if any DF fans will be there, I'd love to meet you.
Stannis is indeed a huge part of the series. He was mentioned quite a bit in the show, but only Renly was seen. Someone best described him as "The Al Gore of Westeros," and that's not far off. He's morally rigid, and a brilliant military tactician, but he is the opposite of Renly: he's loved by no one. While his claim to the Throne is far more valid than Renly's, Renly is by far more popular and able to amass a larger army. These aren't spoilers by the way. The second book is entitled "A Clash of KINGS," for a reason. With Robb King in the North, Joffrey sitting the Iron Throne, and Renly and Barratheon laying claim to it (plus one more mystery guest to be introduced later) the second season is truly going to see war.
I think the casting is a solid one. I always envisioned Stannis as a bit beefier, and it will be interesting to see Dillane with a shaved head and dark beard. What's more important is his chemistry with Melisendre. The chick they go tot play her looks pretty spot on. The character I'm most interested to see cast is Davos Seaworth, The Onion Knight. He's a pirate who was Knighted by Stannis and has a pretty interesting arc.
With all of this said....just like Azkhaban was arguably the best book, the 3rd book in A Song of Ice and Fire, A Storm of Swords is arguably the best in the series. Holy. Shit.
Clash of Kings is great, but Storm of Swords was knock you on your ass amazing. Almost done with Dance With Dragons, and while it does feel like the other half to Feast For Crows, it definitely stands on its own with its share of Holy Shit moments.
I'll say the inverse, where Act 1 should have been act 3 of a different movie...
Gangs of New York
I was WAY more interested in Priest Vallon vs Bill the Butcher than I was in Leo. That story Bill tells where Vallon beats him to a pulp and Bil carves his own eye out in shame, where was THAT movie?
***late again***
I will be there all 4 days. Im staying at a house in Hillcrest when Im not passed out in friends hotel rooms. The first ten people to see me and shout "I'M DOWN IN FRONT!" in my face will win their very own face punch and a spectacular view of me running away in terror.
