Guys, tropes. I understand the usage of the term when it relates to themes inherent in a film, but is it valid to call out recurrent themes across different films?

The way I understand them:
Lynch's usage of drapery would be a trope; they are a  motif he uses across films and significant to his story telling.
Cocking a shotgun with one hand may be a trope if the use is making an overt reference to Terminator 2.
A gay character who hides his sexuality is not a trope, even if the character is played by the same actor. It's a character detail.

I'm asking for clarification because the barrage of trope-isms in this episode left me a little perplexed. Thoughts?

I love you guys so much; you've put more effort put into breaking the film down than was ever invested in the screenplay.

Not a Scot?

In news just in it turns out I'm British *and* Australian. Not only do I get two passports to pay the renewals on, but I can make snide comments about the colonies and feel acrimonious towards myself for doing so.

I like this film a lot, but the 4am casting call for the chatroom was a little too early. Are later recording sessions still on the cards?

Also, hello new person.

The biggest issue I had with CoR was trying to pack too much into too little, a similar feeling to watching Scott Pilgrim. There were too many disparate threads being tied together to build the mythological structure for the universe and it just didn't gel.

This should have focused on one story line; the rescue of Jack for example, and worked towards the W40K ending as the film progressed. Necromongers are neat enough that they could have carried a story on their own if given enough time and build up.

This didn't happen, instead we're left with a bit of a mess. As a film it doesn't work - it's not telling a cohesive story, or providing a specific experience. It was like watching someone mix their meat pie of dinner with meringues of desert. Yes they end up together in your belly, but both at the same time is revolting.

[Edit] This was a little snarky and nonconstructive. [/edit]

I tend to disagree MasterZap, but wholeheartedly back your right to love awful films. For example I love Undead and Bad Taste, both of which are terrible.

Sorry, couldn't get through the commentary Zarban. Came across as being a little bitchy.

I've just seen this film for the first time, holy crap can that Zemeckis guy shoot a picture. For the most part I really liked the balance between athiesm and faith, although it could have ended with a more ambiguous stance.

Needs another critical viewing, then once more with the commentary.

There were some pretty soft edges on some of those mattes huh?

Sorry but the UN has issued an indefinite moratorium on Lycrasploitation films.

Revisiting the first page: Le pacte des loups (Brotherhood of the wolf). It's French, full of action, and if you're not a filthy bi-linguist (according to pundits, god hates them) you'll watch it with subtitles anyway. Perfec'

I'd rather hear "this episode is brought to you by shifty bench's pocket money" then what some podcasts do which is have the host read an advert for anything upto 5 minutes.

I'd rather an ad and guaranteed income for the podcast than ad-hoc donations which may stop. We'd like the show to continue right? As long as Teague doesn't go all Leo on us, it'll be fine tongue

Netflix affiliate links are really going to come down to traffic; with 169 registered users on the forum and limited regional availability, it may not generate sufficient income to support the show on its own. Are there enough downloads per week to make commercial sponsorship of episodes viable?

I've seen the fourth page, it's in 3D. Although better than the third page, it's an utterly cynical grab for more readership and does nothing new.

Remember back on the first page where the thread was about more than just the adventures of Zarban and his magical Tortugan foppishry? Ahh, those were the days.

I miss the video shops; browsing the isles for 5 worthwhile weekly rentals for the evening movie marathon with mates and the arguing over which to pick was the catharsis of many excellent evenings. By the third film of the night people would start crashing, there would make top-up trips to 7-11 for more fizzy drink, and we'd have called the poor bastards at the late night pizza place for yet another delivery. We don't have that shared experience anymore; people bring drives full of films, and the serendipitous moment of finding something new (that nobodies seen) is lost.

Without Blockbuster I would never have experienced Akira, or countless other films that shaped my views and tastes. Thanks to the restrictions of a physical environment and library, many of the films i grew to love were seen during those late night marathons. They probably would never have made into my Quickflix (pretend I said Netflix), Rotten Tomato-vetted queue.

Yes there were dicks who worked there, much like a real bookshop, and despite that the electronic experience pales.

<Edited for spelling. Because I am retarded.>

I agree. I think DiF taking on Stargate and its influence on science fiction would be interesting

I tend to think the series has had more influence. Rewatching the film recently I was struck by how much more enjoyable the series that followed it was; more character development, better realization of the world, and more humor.

I'm afraid to rewatch Blankman; it's a Damon Wayans film so the risk of disappointment is unusually high.
