A couple hours into the audiobook, the only role for Freeman is probably one of the scientists sitting on the Moon giving advice. The type of role that can be filmed in a day without ever having to actually meet the real "stars"...

The best part about GI JOE is there's no need for DIF to do a commentary, as going by the trailer you can just watch the film using the Team America commentary smile
(if the fact the two trailers sync up perfectly is an accident, Matt and Trey are even more brilliant then we thought they were)

How do those who say that compare to those who say the Lord of the Rings movies trash the books? Same level of hatre?

I was talking about the Ewoks. Never before had the heros actually cared about the native population of a planet smile

Ah, a quick look through the interview found a quote that gets to the real problem with Ranma:

So there have been people that have been interested in this idea and we have never been able to get a script. So the answer is, you know, is the story good enough, is the script the best telling of the story, is there an undeniable person to hang it on, is it technologically feasible. All those things come into play.

I understand why people say it's boring but if you get that it's all about the suspense of what comes next, it's a great story.

Are there movies though that are all about exploring some unknown, and not much else? Apart from 2001 and 2010, and each of those punched up the story with something else (the cold war stuff wasn't in the novel of 2010)

It's been a while but i seem to remember one of the astronauts was a polygamist or something. Good luck putting that in a Hollywood movie today.

At least it's not a Heinlein story. Oh, to have someone take a serious stab at The Moon is a Harsh Mistress...

Fincher's choice of Morgan Freeman is a little odd. He's in his mid-70s, who's he supposed to play?

I'm going to give the audiobook a re-listen and see if I can pick out who would fit. Not the captain, obviously, as he's middle aged and banging the female first office iirc. I'm going to guess maybe the doctor or the like...

If he can figure out how to structure it, gods bless him. It's a book with no real characters and no real plot (the whole Mercury thing is the only drama). It's pure exploration where in the end there's no answers, and while I love the book I'm not sure there's a film there. Maybe make it a documentary?

The comments on how well he worked the scenes so the dialog works both assuming Willis is alive and knowing he's dead brought to mind a fun anime series called 'Paranoia Agent'. In the commentaries the producers note that the characters never talk to each other- while they appear to be having a two way conversation, if you actually pay attention everyone is actually doing their own little monologue. The fact the dub was able to capture this as well is amazing, and it's worth a look. An episode from the middle of the show also has a debt to this film (naturally knowing that spoils the episode, but so be it ^_^)

My thoughts were always that the acting just wasn't as good. Leia especially, like when Luke tells her they're siblings. I just don't see a real emotion there smile Never had a problem with Ewoks, as I never took the universe all that seriously to start with. It wasn't a repeat of a previous plot, always a plus.
(I was born in 1969, as age and context is always important in this kind of thing)

It is a different skill set, and I'm having to invent theory and strategy on the fly. On the other hand, I've picked up a copy of an old chess book I loved as a kid to bone up for when we start her on that game smile

Y'all playing checkers, DiF playin' chess.

Got my niece who's in 2nd grade a checkers and chess set, and we've started with checkers. Since I was a chess player as a teen and rarely played checkers, she actually managed to beat me yesterday after only 10-15 games. My chess skills weren't helping me smile

Still, you risk being written off as not that good early on and not having the later stuff published at all. Or actually writing new stuff and having the public think it's exactly like your inferior "old" work.

Nothing unusual in that, as you have to give them some order (and it's better then the Koran's sorting the books by length). Unless you're saying he put all the simple ones in the first book published and left the complex stuff for the last ones, instead of having each book cover a wide range. That would be sneaky smile

Yeah, it is a lean year, but these things go in cycles. You'll get 20 one year and 5 the next.

I just noticed TCM is showing The Caine Mutiny on I think January 9th. Check your local listings smile

My Doctor Who watching is rather sporadic, for whatever reason smile I should try and watch all of the previous season if it's on DVD (watched the first one via torrent awhile ago).

If there's one thing I really wish the new Who would do, it's deal with his granddaughter Susan. Come on, give him family again!

Looks like the first episode of 2011 is going to be a last minute surprise. Can't wait!

I've probably seen the movie at some point, but read the book in school so know the fun scenes from there. The end trial is so fun they did a stage play just of that.

It's from The Caine Mutiny. The Captain, played by Bogie in the film, in well on his way to winning the trial against the mutineers when he's asked about the "strawberry" incident. Things go down hill from there smile

Oh, The Last Airbender (as well as the uncut Metropolis) has to be high on the list. Hell, because it's such a short movie (one of the many and perhaps the source of it's problems) they could do one episode of the show beforehand. Sort of showing how much life was sucked out of the story...

The "quid pro quo" line was the genie imitating  William Buckley, conservative writer and late host of the TV show Firing Line. Can't believe you kids didn't know that...

Yeah, that documentary cleared up why there were the errors in Rescuers Down Under (a movie I really like). At least twice the eagle feather is in the wrong place/vanishes or is in the wrong layer of the background. The fact they were digitally composing everything and under a time crunch and still learning makes it more understandable (it's the type of thing you expect in anime but not a Disney film)

There is a web comic called 'Curvy', <http://www.c.urvy.org/>, which has lots of different worlds like that. Earth is "boring world", on "chocolate world" everyone is made of chocolate, etc. Not work safe, as the comic is the artist's way of combining her two favorite things, chocolate and lesbians smile
